Evangelical Republicans Not Ready To Pull The Lever For A Mormon

10:00 pm EST March 28th, 2011 | Politics | 49 Comments

The conventional wisdom is that Romneycare is Mitt Romney’s biggest obstacle to the Republican nomination. I’m skeptical of this. I think Republicans are willing to ignore the similarities between Romneycare and health care reform because that’s the sort of dissonance required to be a conservative nowadays. What I think the religious right wing of the GOP can’t deal with, and it seems borne out by this Pew poll, is that Romney is a Mormon.

Pew finds Huckabee and Romney leading the field among Republicans nationwide, each with around one-fifth of Republicans naming them as their top choice. But there is a religious split among GOP voters, with 29 percent of white evangelicals favoring Huckabee and only 15 percent picking Romney.”

At the same time, the business wing of the GOP would seem to have a harder task bending Huckabee to their will than was the case with Bush and McCain.

Rev. Grant Storms: Another Hypocrite On The Religious Right Arrested For Perverse Behavior

7:02 am EST March 1st, 2011 | Conservative | 48 Comments

It is always them. Always.

The Rev. Grant Storms, the Christian fundamentalist known for his bullhorn protests of the Southern Decadence festival in the French Quarter, was arrested on a charge of masturbating at a Metairie park Friday afternoon.

Storms, 53, of 2304 Green Acres Road in Metairie, was taken into custody at Lafreniere Park after two women reported seeing him masturbating in the driver’s seat of his van, which was parked near the carousel and playground, a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office report said.

The first woman told deputies she was taking her children to the playground and parked next to the van at about noon. As she was walking around her own vehicle, she noticed the van windows were down and the occupant was “looking at the playground area that contained children playing, with his zipper down…,” the report said. The woman noted that he was masturbating and quickly ushered her children out of her car.

VIDEO: How Republicans Screw The Religious Right

11:43 am EST January 3rd, 2011 | Conservative, History, Republicans | 24 Comments

I recommend the entire series of God In America for a great look at how religion has affected American history. But I particularly recommend the final hour of the series as the religious right themselves explain the way in which Republican presidents like Reagan and George W. Bush totally used them without actually enacting the core of their agenda.

Petraeus Explicitly Compares Extreme Religious Right To Taliban

10:14 am EST September 7th, 2010 | Religion | 54 Comments

Petraeus

No doubt the accomodationist left will clutch their pearls and the righties will reach for their fainting couches, but Petraeus is spot on.

Gen. David H. Petraeus on Tuesday denounced plans by a Florida church to burn copies of the Koran this weekend, saying the demonstration could ‘endanger troops’ and damage the U.S. war effort in Afghanistan.

‘It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems,’ Petraeus, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, said in a statement. ‘Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community.’

Conservatives Are Just Bedwetting Wimps

Eugene Robinson explains what the latest garment-rending from the right tells us:

The thing is, though, that the manufactured brouhaha over the Park51 project is part of a larger pattern in which the far right embraces victimhood and stokes fear. The faction that likes to portray itself as a bunch of John Waynes and ‘mama grizzlies,’ it turns out, spends an awful lot of time cowering in the corner and complaining about how beastly everyone else is being.

On 9/11, while we all grieved and experienced shock, the American right went to a scary place and never got better. You can see it in their approach to Islam both at home and abroad. Rather than separating out enemy and foe, they saw “different” and retired to their bunkers.

Conservatives Silent As Mice Following Federal Court Ruling On Stem Cell Research

12:02 am EST August 24th, 2010 | Science | 3 Comments

Because, you see, when conservatives agree with a federal court’s ruling they get a sort of amnesia about “judicial activism” and the like.

stem cell research

A federal district judge on Monday blocked President Obama’s 2009 executive order that expanded embryonic stem cell research, saying it violated a ban on federal money being used to destroy embryos.

The ruling came as a shock to scientists at the National Institutes of Health and at universities across the country, which had viewed the Obama administration’s new policy and the grants provided under it as settled law. Scientists scrambled Monday evening to assess the ruling’s immediate impact on their work.

I happen to be a strong supporter of stem cell research, but I’m also a supporter of the rule of law. We have a system of laws and courts in America and that means that court findings don’t always jibe with my ideology.

And that’s okay.

More Fake “Christians” On The Right

They’re happy because a doctor who performs abortions has leukemia.

Funny, none of the Bibles I grew up with says that’s the right response. Oh, it’s conservative Christians? Then the actual Bible need not apply.

Liberian Monster Charles Taylor Says He Worked With Religious Right’s Pat Robertson

Former Liberian President Charles Taylor, testifying in his own war crimes trial today, said that the American conservative evangelist Pat Robertson was awarded a Liberian gold-mining concession in 1999 and subsequently offered to lobby the Bush administration to support his government.

Under cross-examination, Taylor said that Robertson had volunteered to make Liberia’s case before U.S. administration officials, and had spoken directly to President Bush about Taylor. He also confirmed that Robertson’s company, Freedom Gold Limited, signed an agreement to exploit gold in southeastern Liberia, but that it never generated any profit.

‘Mr. Taylor, indeed at one point you said that you can count on Pat Robertson to get Washington on your side,’ he was asked by the lead prosecution counsel, Col. Brenda Hollis, a former U.S. Air Force officer. Taylor replied: ‘I don’t recall the exact words, but something to that effect.’
