Rahm Emanuel Leaving White House

ABC Jake Tapper reports

Although no final decision has been made because of family considerations, ABC News has learned that White House officials are preparing for Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel to announce on Friday — as Congress adjourns for recess — that he is leaving his post to explore a run for mayor of Chicago.

White House officials expect that President Obama will also name an interim chief of staff, perhaps senior adviser Pete Rouse, at the announcement.

While I certainly don’t share the dominant point of view in the progressive blogosphere that everything negative in the Obama administration is the work of Rahm Emanuel, I can note that it is less than helpful for the President’s chief of staff to be speaking at a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce right when the Chamber is doing their damndest to throw a monkey wrench into the President’s agenda. This news of course comes down right as the President is focusing on small business – the actual business of small business and not the climate change denial and basic rejection of reality that the Chamber embraces.

So, President-elect Obama has picked a chief of staff with a reputation for knowing the ins and outs of passing legislation and for being hard-nosed about it? Shocker. Ask President Clinton if he could have used a Rahm-type when they tried to pass the health care reform bill back in the ’90s.
