Barack Obama matters to black America for many reasons, but his most symbolic role is that he’s a living role model for black children. As I’ve noted many times before, you can tell someone that they can make it with hard work and studying, but it’s a whole other notion to show black Americans that you really can go as high as the highest office in the country.

Here’s Obama at a high school graduation for Booker T. Washington High School, and the reaction of the students.

There isn’t anyway to quantify what this does for black Americans.

Mississippi Debates Honoring Klan Leader On License Plates

The south fails yet again. You’ve got to be kidding me.

A fight is brewing in Mississippi over a proposal to issue specialty license plates honoring Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, who was an early leader of the Ku Klux Klan.

The Mississippi Division of Sons of Confederate Veterans wants to sponsor a series of state-issued license plates to mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which it calls the “War Between the States.” The group proposes a different design each year between now and 2015, with Forrest slated for 2014.

“Seriously?” state NAACP president Derrick Johnson said when he was told about the Forrest plate. “Wow.”

Republicans Invite Hate Group “Scholar” To Tesify On The Federal Reserve

Thomas DiLorenzo The Keystone Kongress hasn’t been in charge for very long, and yet they’re already scraping the barrel on people they invite to testify.

The ranking Democrat on a House panel overseeing the Federal Reserve on Wednesday accused a witness invited by Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) of being affiliated with a “hate group.”

The first meeting of the House Financial Services Committee’s subcommittee on domestic monetary policy had a tense moment when Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-Mo.) questioned the background of Dr. Thomas DiLorenzo.

Clay went after DiLorenzo, an economic professor at Loyola University invited to testify by Paul, for his connections with the League of the South, which has been identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a “neo-Confederate” group. The league identifies DiLorenzo as an “affiliated scholar” of its League of the South Institute for the Study of Southern Culture and History.
“After reviewing your work and the so-called message you employ, I still do not understand you being invited to testify today on the unemployment situation,” Clay said. “But I do know that I have no questions for you.”

Who is the League Of The South?

The League of the South is a neo-Confederate group that advocates for a second Southern secession and a society dominated by “European Americans.” The league believes the “godly” nation it wants to form should be run by an “Anglo-Celtic” (read: white) elite that would establish a Christian theocratic state and politically dominate blacks and other minorities. Originally founded by a group that included many Southern university professors, the group lost its Ph.D.s as it became more explicitly racist. The league denounces the federal government and northern and coastal states as part of “the Empire,” a materialist and anti-religious society.

VIDEO: Houston Police Beat Teen Burglar Chad Holley

This is ridiculous. The suspect is subdued – he was clipped by a police car, and yet the cops just wail on him.

Even worse, the police department tried to keep the video under wraps.

Chad Holley, 16, accused eight officers of beating him while he was in custody on a burglary charge, on which he was later convicted. Holley claimed he was hit by a police car then beaten and kicked by police officers near a self-storage facility on Cook Road on March 24. Holley was 15 at the time.

Surveillance cameras caught the incident on tape. The tape was not released to the public by federal injunction.

However, Quanell X, the leader of the New Black Panther Party in Houston, decided to release it after he obtained a copy as part of a defamation lawsuit filed against him by one of the officers.

The video showed one officer delivering at least seven kicks to Holley while another officer punched Holley five times, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Holley is not seen on tape struggling with the officers, the station reported.

Seven police officers were terminated in connection with the incident. Four officers were also charged in connection with the incident

FBI: Bomb At Martin Luther King Jr. Day March Was Domestic Terror

The abandoned backpack found Monday along the route of Spokane’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. march contained a bomb capable of inflicting “multiple casualties,” the FBI has confirmed.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s terrorism task force is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for planting the bomb. The FBI on Tuesday issued a bulletin asking for the public’s assistance.

Frank Harrill, special agent in the charge of the Spokane FBI office, would not discuss what specifically made the bomb so dangerous but said the investigation has become a top priority.

Like Clockwork: Haley Barbour Praises Pro-Segregation Citizen’s Council

He’s just a good old boy.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) has set off a firestorm of controversy over his comments on the civil rights era in his hometown of Yazoo City, and now the president of the state’s NAACP organization is calling his remarks “offensive” and akin to revisionist history.

“It is quite disturbing that the governor of the state would take an approach to the history of this state,” said Derrick Johnson, president of the Mississippi NAACP. “It’s beyond disturbing — it’s offensive that he would take that approach to the history of this state to many African-Americans who had to suffer as a result of the policies and practices of the Citizens Council.”

In his interview with The Weekly Standard, Barbour heaps praise on the pro-segregation Citizens Council, which he credits with integrating the Yazoo City public schools without any violence.

“Because the business community wouldn’t stand for it,” he said. “You heard of the Citizens Councils? Up north they think it was like the KKK. Where I come from it was an organization of town leaders. In Yazoo City they passed a resolution that said anybody who started a chapter of the Klan would get their ass run out of town. If you had a job, you’d lose it. If you had a store, they’d see nobody shopped there. We didn’t have a problem with the Klan in Yazoo City.”

With Barbour, I am genuinely confused as to whether he’s being diabolical or if he’s just your standard issue conservative who is totally ignorant of American history. Either way, it’s the kind of thing that the Republican party has built its modern incarnation on, so in their eyes Haley has done no wrong.

Black Republican Candidates Say GOP Is Ignoring Them

Three long-shot African-American Republican House candidates are fuming at national party leaders for not doing enough to help get them elected.

Campaign managers for Chuck Smith in Virginia, Charlotte Bergmann in Tennessee and Marvin Scott in Indiana all said the support they’ve received from GOP leaders this cycle has been dismal. They added that there could be consequences for the party if they are elected to Congress next year.

Smith’s campaign manager, Lisa Creeden, said she wishes her boss could count on the party’s help; no Republican has held Virginia’s 3rd district in 18 years.

‘I think the Republican Party is going to damage themselves with the African-American community,’ Creeden said. ‘I understand part of it is they are focused on races they can win easily, but our point is we couldn’t necessarily win this easily, but we can still win it. The effort to reach out to the African-American community will pay out in future elections.
