It’s too bad. When much of the media was giving a pass to the Bush administration’s malfeasance, or actively cheerleading it (Fox), Olbermann was one of the few to say “what the fuck is going on here?” as the right tried to destroy America.

No doubt, this departure is evidence of how Comcastic the future will be: No liberals allowed on the teevee, they may say mean things!!!

Nothing new here, MSNBC doesn’t know WTF its doing. They haven’t known for a long time. Having a core of progressive hosts in prime time was more of an accident than a plan, and now they’ve screwed that up.

MSNBC chief Phil Griffin suspended Keith Olbermann today for violating “NBC News policy and standards” by donating to three Democratic congressional candidates last month. But according to an NBC News source, MSNBCers have been exempt from those rules for years.

NBC News rules explicitly bar employees from making political donations without prior approval, which is ostensibly why Griffin suspended Olbermann. But according to one NBC News insider, it’s common knowledge within the organization that MSNBC’s increasingly left-wing programming and personalities aren’t required to abide by NBC News’ exacting rules—if they were, it would be a much less bombastic and politically charged network.

But this enthusiasm for a “wide range of strong, opinionated voices” rings hollow in the wake of MSNBC’s firing of host Phil Donahue. (FAIR’s founder, Jeff Cohen, worked as a senior producer for Donahue.) His show was cancelled despite having the best ratings on the network; this occurred, according to published reports, after a study commissioned by NBC described Donahue as “a tired, left-wing liberal out of touch with the current marketplace” who would be a “difficult public face for NBC in a time of war” (All Your TV, 2/25/03). “He seems to delight in presenting guests who are anti-war, anti-Bush and skeptical of the administration’s motives,” the report noted, warning that the Donahue show could be “a home for the liberal antiwar agenda at the same time that our competitors are waving the flag at every opportunity.”

Christine O’Donnell just sent the following e-mail out via Redstate.com (whose founder described her campaign as “amateur hour”, but I guess if the checks clear…):

We all knew that my opponent couldn’ t hide behind the failed policies of Obama, Pelosi and Reid forever. Even the liberal media led by Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann can’t cover up the truth.

I’ ve been an hard-working citizen, who is only running so we can finally get the real change we need in Washington. My opponent has been a politician for years and is running away from his record. Since he has been in a leadership position on the New Castle County Council, spending has risen 33%.

Marc Rubio, Scott Brown, and now Christine O’Donnell have all based fundraising appeals around MSNBC hosts – but we’re supposed to believe that MSNBC’s progressives haven’t had any impact. Imagine.

Don’t Self-Censor The News

I had an interesting discussion today with a friend about news and how American news censors itself. As soon as I heard Sen. Levin quote the Goldman Sachs e-mail about the “shitty deal”, I sighed. The mainstream media would bleep out those words. Why? Because the mainstream press still acts as if this is the Victorian era and we’ll all have to find our fainting couches if someone says a dirty word.

The words from these e-mails were a key element in why Goldman was on Capitol Hill in the first place. They were pumping and dumping “shitty deals” and knew it, and in my opinion if you’re in the news business you should be reporting what was said and not “s***** deals” or calling it “vulgar”. Thankfully someone just reported what happened: Keith Olbermann.

It’s 2010, there’s no need for the news to censor itself. Tell us what happened. Naughty words included.

OK, so cable-news pundits bluster, shoot from the hip and end up hilariously, spectacularly wrong occasionally. Or more than occasionally. It’s pretty much the job description. And Chris Matthews—well, God love him, he’s very good at his job.

But this clip is really something. It’s like a gold-medal performance in wrongness. It’s like automotive engineers built a supersonic Wrong machine, filled its fuel tank with high-octane Liquid Wrong, hauled it out to the Bonneville Salt Flats, and attempted to set the world record in wrong.
