Report: Mexican Drug War Being Armed By American Guns

Guns

From Mayors Against Illegal Guns:

The report shows that of the guns recovered from Mexican crime scenes and submitted for tracing by ATF between 2006 and 2009, four in ten of those guns were originally sold in Texas. The three other border states – Arizona, California, and New Mexico – were the source for another third of those guns.

When controlling for state population, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas each have export rates 169 percent greater than any other state and at a rate three times as high as the fourth border state, California. Relatively lax gun laws in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas may contribute to that disparity.

The report also notes that the time between the original sale of guns at U.S. gun dealers and the recovery of those guns at Mexican crime scenes is decreasing – a sign of ever more sophisticated gun trafficking.”

Our Addiction Fuels Mexican Drug Wars

4:26 pm EST March 25th, 2009 | News | 10 Comments

So says Sec. Clinton.

“Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade,” she said, using unusually blunt language. “Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians.”

Since last year, drug-related killings and battles between law enforcement authorities and the cartels have resulted in more than 7,200 deaths in Mexico, and raised doubts about the country’s stability. The violence has begun spilling across the border.

Of course, the logical thing to do would then be to decriminalize most of this stuff, since it just ends up creating a black market like the prohibition of alcohol did in the 1920s. But that’s not likely to happen any time soon.

The Record sports newspaper is encouraging readers to take part with a headline Tuesday that reads: ‘Help end the losing streak so Mexico advances.’

Readers are instructed to cut out a page and take it to an electronics store in exchange for a U.S. team voodoo doll.
