Jamaica’s Miss Lou

8:20 am EST December 3rd, 2009 | Uncategorized | 4 Comments

Thought this vid might interest you all a bit. It’s a little clip of “Miss Lou” aka Louise Bennett, who passed a way a few years ago. She was a much beloved cultural figure in Jamaica, who was all about preserving and educating about the unique cultural elements of Jamaica. I remember her most from my time in Jamaica (I lived there for a few years in the early ’80s) as the host of a kids show where she would tell stories about Brother Anansi (aka Anansi aka Brer Rabbit). Good stuff. When she passed away there was a huge national outpouring towards her. I guess you could say she was something like a combo of Mr. Rogers and Maya Angelou. Something like that.

Jack Mandora, me no choose none.

Usain Bolt’s Lighting Bolt

6:29 pm EST November 2nd, 2009 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

Nice

The world’s fastest man adopted the animal kingdom’s fastest sprinter Monday, as Usain Bolt welcomed a new baby cheetah named Lightning Bolt into his life.

The Jamaican sprinter’s sponsorship of the 3-month-old male cheetah is part of an effort to boost Kenyan conservation efforts of its famous wildlife, whose survival is threatened by trophy hunting, climate change and human encroachment.

The world record-holder in the 100 and 200 meters paid $13,700 to formally adopt the cub. He will also pay $3,000 a year to care for Lightning Bolt, who will be raised at an animal orphanage in Nairobi.

Again. Fast.

If he can run this fast in torrential rain and cold temperatures, heaven knows what he is capable of with a bit of sun and a tailwind on his back.

Not for the first time this season, the weather gods conspired to try to halt the Jamaican’s progress, but he made light of the conditions to cross the line in 9.79sec.

“I had a good feeling,” he said. “It was like flying.”

It was the fifth fastest time of his career and two one-hundredths of a second behind the world-leading time posted by his American rival, Tyson Gay, last week.

An unofficial record, but it’s amazing how fast Bolt is, especially when he glides ahead of the rest of the field. Yes, I have to note – Big Up Jamaica.

100 Meters Record Broken By Jamaican

2:54 am EST June 1st, 2008 | Sports | 5 Comments

For some reason, Jamaica is really good at track and field.

The Reebok Grand Prix meet took place at Randalls Island on Saturday night, but it was a home crowd for Jamaica’s newest sprint star at 100 meters, Usain Bolt.

And the 6,490 fans were greeted with a stunning performance as Bolt set a world record in 9.72 seconds, competing in the event for only the fifth time in a professional race. His mark eclipsed the previous record of 9.74, set last September by his countryman Asafa Powell, and left Tyson Gay of the United States, the 2007 world champion, more than a yard behind in 9.85.

The Jamaican crowd got a double dose of victory as Veronica Campbell-Brown, the reigning world champion, also won her race, in 10.91 seconds, the fastest women’s 100 in the world this year.

2.8 million people live in Jamaica, yet they’ve had two 100m world record holders in the space of a year. Almost my entire family is from there and none of us are especially fast.

Maybe the Redskins can hire me to go down and scout out some running backs and wide receivers.
