Democrats Cave To GOP On Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal

4:37 pm EST September 21st, 2010 | Democrats | 35 Comments

Don’t believe the hype. The failure of cloture in order to repeal don’t ask, don’t tell cannot be fully laid at the feet of the Republican party. The Democrats – and not just the ones who voted bigot like Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor – have a lot of blame in this failure too.

If someone in the Senate threatens a filibuster, they need to be forced to filibuster. When southern racists opposed civil rights, they were forced to actually filibuster on the floor of the senate. If you are so bigoted that you oppose allowing a vote (that has a majority) on whether gay Americans can serve their country, by God, stand up and defend your position in the well of the U.S. Senate.

Otherwise, Democratic subservience to the right-wing is on full display with this exercise. It has been standard operating procedure during Harry Reid’s tenure as majority (and minority) “leader.”

Sharron Angle, Epic Joke

For someone like myself, who could do without Harry Reid, its like Sharron Angle is so nutty she wrapped up the election for Reid with a bright red bow.

VIDEO: Harry Reid Recants His Previous Position On 14th Amendment Repeal

4:04 pm EST August 19th, 2010 | Politics | 1 Comment

I’ve seen a lot of people and conservative media outlets referencing Reid’s original statement on the issue after the GOP released the video of it, but considering that he recanted the position 4 years ago (April 5, 2006) and CSPAN has all their archives online, I haven’t seen people show that video. So here it is:

C-SPAN’s clipping tool is somewhat imprecise, so Reid’s comments start at 6:01:53 precisely.

The New Birchers: Sharron Angle Fears Fluoridated Water

12:03 pm EST June 9th, 2010 | Conservative | 50 Comments

These morons are awesome.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported in April 1999 that the state assembly, of which Angle was a member, voted 26-16 for a bill that required fluoridation in two counties including the cities of Reno and Las Vegas. Angle was a strong opponent of the measure

Sue “Barter” Lowden

11:30 pm EST April 20th, 2010 | Republicans | 42 Comments

The leading GOP candidate for the Nevada senate seat thinks that we should pay for health care with chickens.

If Harry Reid can’t beat her, he deserves to lose his seat.

Clyburn: Harry Reid Almost Killed Health Care Reform

9:40 am EST March 30th, 2010 | Democrats | 6 Comments

He needs more than a searchlight.

Clyburn said the election of Republican Scott Brown to the late Sen. Ted Kennedy’s seat was a turning point in passing the overhaul last week. He said at the time, the Senate was pursuing a 60-vote strategy for the legislation to get around filibuster threats by Republicans.

To get there, Reid made several deals with lawmakers, including giving up the public option on insurance and giving $100 million in extra Medicaid money solely to Nebraska to help win support from that state’s Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson. Dubbed the Cornhusker Kickback, it was eliminated in the revisions bill, but had caused a stir over such backroom deals that the Republicans pointed out.

‘So he got 60 votes. Well, the problem is the Nebraska thing, more than anything else, caused the defeat up in Massachusetts,’ Clyburn said.
That forced Democrats to rely on their majority numbers, he said.

New Poll Shows Harry Reid Still Losing

11:10 am EST March 1st, 2010 | News | 5 Comments

Looks like its time for the Dems to get a new leader in the senate.

A Mason Dixon/Las Vegas Review-Journal survey of registered Nevada voters indicates Reid losing to the leading two Republican challengers by double digits. Against state GOP chairwoman Sue Lowden, Reid faces a 52-39 percent deficit while the Nevada Democrat is down 51-40 percent against businessman Danny Tarkanian.

Maybe the next Democratic leader in the senate won’t appear to secretly be working for the Republicans.

Harry Reid Claims Reconciliation Passage Of Health Care In 60 Days

2:18 pm EST February 21st, 2010 | News | 6 Comments

harry reidI don’t know why they have to take so long to do this. We’ve been at this issue – in this legislative session – for almost a year now, not to mention the decades before going back and forth on this. Just make it happen, for Christ’s sake.

‘I’ve had many conversations this week with the president, his chief of staff, and Speaker Pelosi,’ Reid said during an appearance Friday evening on ‘Face to Face with Jon Ralston’ in Nevada. ‘And we’re really trying to move forward on this.’

The majority leader said that while Democrats have a number of options, they would likely use the budget reconciliation process to pass a series of fixes to the first healthcare bill passed by the Senate in November. These changes are needed to secure votes for passage of that original Senate bill in the House.

‘We’ll do a relatively small bill to take care of what we’ve already done,’ Reid said, affirming that Democrats would use the reconciliation process. ‘We’re going to have that done in the next 60 days.’

Harry Reid, John Ensign Fall For Phony “Obama Attacks Vegas” Story

6:27 pm EST February 2nd, 2010 | Politics | 17 Comments

The U.S. senate is stupid, led by stupid people like Harry Reid and payoff man John Ensign. They’re both in high fake outrage over comments President Obama made today in New Hampshire:

Finally, shouldn’t we all agree that we have got to do something about our deficits? These deficits won’t just burden our kids and grandkids decades from now – they could damage our markets, drive up our interest rates, and jeopardize our recovery right now

This isn’t how responsible families do their budgets. When times are tough, you tighten your belts. You don’t go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don’t blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you’re trying to save for college. You prioritize. You make tough choices. And it’s time your government did the same.

The source of the distortion is The Hill, who wrote up a story with the headline “Obama takes another dig at Las Vegas”:

President Barack Obama took another dig at Las Vegas at his New Hampshire town hall Tuesday after similar remarks got him into hot water last year.

Obama said that people should now (sic) “blow a bunch of cash in Vegas” during a tough recession. Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman called for Obama to apologize after he made comparable comments last February.

This is an absurd characterization. Does anyone believe that – no matter how much the city of Las Vegas needs tourist dollars – that someone should go gambling there with a college fund? Because that was what Obama was saying. He was drawing a parallel between doing something foolish instead of exercising financial restraint.

And yet, like dopes, both Harry Reid and John Ensign fell for the fake story hook, line, and sinker – propelling an already mind-bendingly stupid bit of journalism on for another few hours.

Looks Like Democrats Get A New Senate Leader

12:10 pm EST January 25th, 2010 | News | 4 Comments

Harry Reid is losing badly versus just about every likely opponent this fall. While I’m sad that nobody stepped up to primary him, the loss of Reid is an opportunity for the Democrats in the Senate to find a leader more in touch with the party as Speaker Pelosi is in the House. Right now I lean towards a safe blue-state Democrat like Dick Durbin or Chuck Schumer.
