Michelle Obama, Jill Biden Go To Haiti

6:32 pm EST April 13th, 2010 | News | Comments Off

It’s good to send someone so prominent so people don’t think we’ve forgotten our commitments.

First lady Michelle Obama made a surprise visit Tuesday to the ruins of the Haitian capital, a high-profile reminder that hundreds of thousands remain in desperate straits three months after the earthquake.

The first lady and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, took a helicopter tour of Port-au-Prince, where many people are still homeless, before landing at the destroyed national palace to meet President Rene Preval. They later talked with students whose lives have been upended by the disaster and walked along a vast, squalid encampment of families living under bed sheets and tents.

‘It’s powerful,’ Obama told reporters. ‘The devastation is definitely powerful.’

6.1 Aftershock Hits Haiti

9:13 am EST January 20th, 2010 | Uncategorized | 1 Comment

Come on. There’s only so much these people can take.

A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Wednesday morning, shaking buildings and sending screaming people running into the streets only eight days after the country’s capital was devastated by an apocalyptic quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the new quake hit at 6:03 a.m. about 35 miles northwest of the capital of Port-au-Prince. It struck at a depth of 13.7 miles but was too far inland to generate any tidal waves in the Caribbean.

Redskins Giving Haiti Relief

11:33 am EST January 15th, 2010 | Uncategorized | 2 Comments

I give Dan Snyder a lot of grief, but he and the team deserve some kudos for this:

As they did following Katrina, 9/11, and other disasters, the Redskins are mobilizing their not-insignificant resources to help however they can. In this case, the team is joining with business partner Diageo to fly medical supplies, clothing, and personnel to the disaster scene. Owner Daniel M. Snyder is donating use of his private airplane, and former Redskin Ken Harvey will be joining the team.

“We’re not a relief organization, but there are times when our resources allow us to step in and make a difference, if only a small one,” Snyder said. “Diageo has been involved in relief efforts around the world for many years, and we’re fortunate to be able to partner with them, Getting the right people and supplies to Haiti is critically important, and we’re providing our best resources.”

Good

A senior White House adviser says evangelist broadcaster Pat Robertson’s remark that Haiti has been ‘cursed’ doesn’t express the spirit of the American people or the president.

Valerie Jarrett said Thursday on ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’ that Roberston’s statement left her speechless and called it ‘a pretty stunning comment to make.’

SOS Children’s Village Needs Help In Haiti

3:09 pm EST January 13th, 2010 | Uncategorized | 1 Comment

My friend Cory who works with SOS Children’s Village has passed on this urgent appeal

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and has suffered both destructive natural disasters and political turmoil. SOS Children’s Villages has been established in Haiti for many years and will do everything in its power to help those who need urgent assistance, with a special focus on the children. Due to the total loss of communication lines, the extent to which SOS Children’s Villages in Haiti have been affected is not known at this point, but there is no doubt that immediate aid as well as long-term support will require a large amount of funds.
