Obama Said No To Cantor’s Can-Kicking

10:15 pm EST July 13th, 2011 | Economy | 33 Comments

I’m no fan of the concessions Obama has offered to the GOP in order to get the debt ceiling raised, but he’s stated over and over again that kicking the can a couple feet down the road just isn’t going to do — yet that’s what the GOP apparently offered up again.

It was the fifth straight day of talks, but the first in which attendees, speaking on background, were willing to admit that steps were taken backwards. According to multiple sources, disagreements surfaced early, in the middle and at the end of the nearly two-hour talks. At issue was Cantor’s repeated push to do a short-term resolution and Obama’s insistence that he would not accept one.

“Eric don’t call my bluff. I’m going to the American people on this,” the president said, according to both Cantor and another attendee. “This process is confirming what the American people think is the worst about Washington: that everyone is more interested in posturing, political positioning, and protecting their base, than in resolving real problems.”

They don’t even seem to know who the heck is in charge over on the GOP side. Is it Boehner? Cantor? Or, more likely, people like Limbaugh?

Hell, even with the blue dogs jammed in her side, Nancy Pelosi got bills through the House. Boehner can’t even get a lightbulb bill passed.

If US Government Defaults, Eric Cantor Stands To Profit

1:32 pm EST June 29th, 2011 | Economy, Republicans | 37 Comments

I wish I weren’t so cynical that I would actually believe that the majority leader of the US House Of Representatives would actually push us to financial chaos in order to personally profit. But I am that cynical because I’ve watched these people for years now.

Last year the Wall Street Journal reported that Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the House, had between $1,000 and $15,000 invested in ProShares Trust Ultrashort 20+ Year Treasury EFT. The fund aggressively “shorts” long-term U.S. Treasury bonds, meaning that it performs well when U.S. debt is undesirable. (A short is when the trader hopes to profit from the decline in the value of an asset.)

According to his latest financial disclosure statement, which covers the year 2010 and has been publicly available since this spring, Cantor still has up to $15,000 in the same fund. Contacted by Salon this week, Cantor’s office gave no indication that the Virginia Republican, who has played a leading role in the debt ceiling negotiations, has divested himself of these holdings since his last filing. Unless an agreement can be reached, the U.S. could begin defaulting on its debt payments on Aug. 2. If that happens and Cantor is still invested in the fund, the value of his holdings would skyrocket.

Eric Cantor Accuses CBO Of Being Dishonest, Previously Cited CBO

2:26 pm EST January 4th, 2011 | Republicans | 18 Comments

Eric Cantor

Eric Cantor just accused the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) of producing dishonest data, despite the office’s long track record of running the numbers.

Numbers, in fact, that were apparently just fine and dandy for one Eric Cantor to cite a while back in order to try and prop up his opposition to the stimulus. In that instance, Politifact found that Cantor straight out lied.

This new congress isn’t even officially totally in power yet, but they’re already on track to be one of the most intellectually dishonest in U.S. history.

Eric Cantor: Never Mind On That Health Care Reform Repeal

1:10 pm EST November 30th, 2010 | Conservative, Republicans | 3 Comments

Surprise!

House Majority Leader-designate Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said Monday that Republicans will not be seeking to completely scrap the healthcare reform law.

Cantor said there are certain elements of current law that will be included in the GOP plan, which he said will move simultaneously with a repeal measure through the House.

Provisions that Republicans will seek to retain include the barring of insurance companies from refusing coverage to patients with a pre-existing condition and allowing young people to stay on their parents’ insurance plans until age 26.

They won’t ever actually repeal the law, because they know people want the provisions.

Republicans Like Eric Cantor Aren’t Actually Serious People

8:15 am EST November 19th, 2010 | Republicans | Comments Off

eric cantorThis is the kind of thought process that comes out of a Republican nowadays. In fact, Cantor is a Republican leader.

Asked about a proposal to fix the nation’s federal deficit co-authored by a Democratic budget expert and noted non-European retired Sen. Pete Domenici (R), which would actually lower taxes on income and corporations, Cantor dismissed it because, basically, parts of it look to him like something a European might consider.

These are children, clearly, with no interest in doing what it takes to lead the country and the world.

Norman Leboon Arrested For Threatening Eric Cantor

2:27 pm EST March 29th, 2010 | News | 36 Comments

Unlike Cantor’s story last week this is very real, and nutty criminal behavior.

U.S. authorities have arrested and charged a man with threatening to kill the No. 2 Republican in the House of Representatives, Eric Cantor, and his family, according to court documents filed on Monday.

Norman Leboon, 38, was accused of making the threat in a video on YouTube in which he said, ‘You receive my bullets in your office, remember they will be placed in your heads,’ according to an FBI affidavit accompanying the charge.

MORE: This guy also has video threats vs. Pelosi,Reid, Biden and Obama.

Eric Cantor Undermines U.S. Foreign Policy On Foreign Soil

10:08 am EST August 7th, 2009 | Republicans | 13 Comments

Not too long ago Republicans called this sort of behavior treason.

Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) took a swipe at President Barack Obama’s Mideast policy in Jerusalem on Thursday, telling reporters he was worried about the administration’s direction in its attempts to forge a settlement in the region.

‘We’re here to try and make things better; we are here because we are concerned,’ Cantor said. ‘We are concerned about what the White House has been signaling as of late in their desire to push through in terms of a Middle East peace plan.’
