Hillary White Power Clinton

The last throes are pretty messy.

Hillary Rodham Clinton vowed Wednesday to continue her quest for the Democratic nomination, arguing she would be the stronger nominee because she appeals to a wider coalition of voters — including whites who have not supported Barack Obama in recent contests.

“I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on,” she said in an interview with USA TODAY. As evidence, Clinton cited an Associated Press article “that found how Sen. Obama’s support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me.”

“There’s a pattern emerging here,” she said.

Indeed, a pattern has emerged some time ago. Boy, did we dodge a bullet.

“[W]orking, hard-working Americans, white Americans”. She really said that. Wow.

Congratulations, Hillary Clinton, you win the prize for the first Democratic Bigot Eruption since I’ve been keeping track of this. Even professional haters like Pat Buchanan and his ilk aren’t so balls-out about racism. You’ve been getting your ass handed to you and especially among black voters. This shows me once again that we - who are apparently lazy and shiftless non-Americans based on your definition - have yet again been a leading indicator.

There was maybe a slight chance Barack Obama might have been pushed to pick you as his running mate, but we can’t have someone spouting Klan-style talking points on the ticket. Heck, there’s a good shot with language like that you won’t win back your senate seat in 2012. I mean, a lot of those apparently lazy and shiftless non-American blacks helped you to win and they’d just as soon vote for someone else in the primary or the Republican in the election rather than someone echoing Bull Connor’s language.

“Working, hard working Americans, white Americans”, indeed.

UPDATE: Thanks for the link Americablog, and to make clear what I consider Clinton’s Klan-style talking point is her assertion that the hard working Americans are white Americans. That’s what I take offense to, and I don’t think you have to be black to feel that way.

Black Voters Don’t Count

That’s the latest - and probably last - b.s. excuse from Team Clinton on why they didn’t really lose the nomination. As I discussed with a friend last night, the Clinton campaign decided that in order to win they would throw the black vote aside and drive up their vote among white voters. What they didn’t calculate was that black voters weren’t going to sit by and let that happen, while at the same time many white voters did not fall for the trickery.

The Greatest Generation (Domestic Edition)

Elderly black Americans like this woman laid the groundwork for those of us who followed. Without their sacrifices in the past, there is no America of today - where the ideals of racial equality are recognized as an uncontroversial national ideal. These men and women understand the historical significance of a black president in a way my generation never can no matter how hard we try. They know that for a single moment in history the election of Barack Obama would be right behind the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil Rights Act. They’ve shown up in the primary season and that is just the warm up for the general election.

The McCain Show

McCain

Get ready to watch The McCain Show this election season. The McCain show is John McCain making great show about being against his party’s racist impulses while at the same time benefitting from them and not demonstrating the leadership to keep the party in line.

Howard Dean: “This is a test of leadership for John McCain. If he can’t pick up the phone and make members of his own party stop airing a television ad he claims to oppose, how can he lead our country through an economic crisis or the war in Iraq? After shifting his positions on gun control, immigration and tax cuts throughout this campaign, McCain should not equivocate on this issue. Making a show of releasing your emails to the press is not leadership. If he is serious, he will get this ad pulled.”

50 Shots? Sigh.

I confess I haven’t followed this case, and it is highly likely the jury (correction: it was a judge trial) had every reason for deciding as they did. But I hope people understand that just from a gut level it is very hard for black people to reconcile that there was nothing criminal about an innocent young man being gunned down in a hail of bullets.

Three detectives were found not guilty Friday morning on all charges in the shooting death of Sean Bell, who died in a hail of 50 police bullets outside a club in Jamaica, Queens.

Justice Arthur J. Cooperman, who delivered the verdict, said many of the prosecution’s witnesses, including Mr. Bell’s friends and the two wounded victims, were simply not believable. “At times, the testimony of those witnesses just didn’t make sense,” he said.

His verdict prompted several supporters of Mr. Bell to storm out of the courtroom, and screams could be heard in the hallway moments later. The three detectives — Gescard F. Isnora, Michael Oliver and Marc Cooper — were escorted out of a side doorway. Outside, a crowd gathered behind police barricades, occasionally shouting, amid a veritable sea of police officers.

The verdict comes 17 months to the day since the Nov. 25, 2006, shooting of Mr. Bell, 23, and his friends, Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield, outside the Club Kalua in Jamaica, Queens, hours before Mr. Bell was to be married.

Plight Of The Black Cons

Obama in Selma

In all likelihood, Barack Obama will be the Democratic nominee for president. He will be the first black man in history with a legitimate, decent shot at being the leader of the free world. His candidacy will cause turnout among black Americans to go off the charts and more blacks - in raw numbers and in percentages - will vote than ever before in American history (we’ve seen the early rumblings of this in the primary process, but I think that America at large just has no idea how strong this thing will be in a general election).

In an environment like that, where the vast majority of blacks engaged in politics are moving forward you have a miniscule few who for whatever the reason (I tend to think its for them to adopt a contrarian pose) will vote Republican. As a result, they are outliers within their own race and essentially position themselves against the tide of black history. The tried and true response of black conservatives is to look at themselves as some kind of hero or martyrs. The larger conservative movement, unable to attract a sizable percentage of black votes, trumpets these kinds of stories again and again. Like this blog post from the hard-right Human Events:

Blacks who will vote for McCain this fall are some of the most courageous people on the planet, because of the extreme social scorn they will face from their left-wing black counterparts.

It takes courage to challenge the dominant social order. It took courage for Elia Kazan to battle pro-Communist sentiment in the 1950s. It took courage for Martin Luther King to fight Jim Crow in the 1960s. It took courage for Ronald Reagan to confront institutionalized liberalism in the 1980s. Likewise, it will take courage for black Republicans like [Michael] Steele to combat “Obama-ism” in the late-2000s.

Of course, a black person supporting McCain is not courageous at all. If you want to truly compare it to the 1960s its the equivalent of seeing Bull Connor sic dogs on people and saying “Hey guys, let’s cool it on all this civil rights stuff, we may upset some people.”

The funny thing is, its not even a conservative vs liberal thing. On a whole, black Americans are far more conservative socially than your average Democrat. The story the media refuses to cover beyond spectacle is the churchgoing socially conservative socially active black Americans that are the bedrock of the Democratic party. The problem for the press and the right is that those same socially conservative voters are by and large economic moderates to liberals. They don’t think that they should be distracted by politician’s latest song and dance on a social issue they’ll drop like a hot potato the day after they’re elected (ie George W. Bush and gay marriage) but instead they think that sane economics helps lead to cures for social ills (tax cuts for Paris Hilton don’t help teen pregnancy rates, but perhaps better funding for education does).

On paper, many of these voters should be Republican voters, and the few who are are overrepresented in the media (CNN seems to have a neverending supply of black conservatives) and for their contrarianism are paid handsomely. While they collect this money for espousing a minority of a minority opinion they treat any and all backlash as a sign of superiority. They see themselves as martyrs, but the only thing they do is prop up policies hurting black America that the vast majority of black America has rejected.

Neither side of the idealogical divide has an awesome record on racial issues, but only on the left would it even be plausible for a black candidate to be a presidential contender. Only on the left are their elected leaders at the federal level who are black. There is a reason for that, a reason why the party of the southern strategy and Macaca makes blacks sick to the stomach.

And a reason why black conservatives who help to prop up barriers to progress aren’t martyrs but fools.

The Wave Coming This November

The MSM and the establishment political class just haven’t noticed it yet.

Colette Forrest was among the first in Charlotte. She came with 13-month-old son Bobby to vote in the Democratic primary for Obama for president and Beverly Perdue for governor.

“This election is historic,” said Forrest, who is black, after voting on the second floor of the Facilities Services Building at CPCC.

“Never have we been in the position to vote for an African American for president and a woman for governor. This is what my ancestors — my grandparents — fought for.”

GOP Bigot Eruption: Rep. Geoff Davis Calls Sen. Obama A “Boy”

GOP Congressman Geoff Davis Called Barack Obama A BoyThey won’t contain themselves. No matter how much John McCain asks his party and fellow conservatives to tone down the racial rhetoric, they will not be able to stop themselves. The idea of a black man beating their Republican candidate for the presidency will be too much to bear for the party of the Southern Strategy.

This summer the GOP Bigot Eruptions are going to go nuclear.

Cue the knuckle-dragging Geoff Davis:

Congressman Geoff Davis, took the criticisms of Mr. Obama a few steps further, likening the change slogan to the pitch of a “snake oil salesman.” He then relayed to the audience that he had taken party in a “highly classified, national security simulation” with Obama.

“I’m going to tell you something: That boy’s finger does not need to be on the button,” Mr. Davis said. “He could not make a decision in that simulation that related to a nuclear threat to this country.”

Once the “boy” remarks began to circulate on the Internet, the Obama campaign moved swiftly to criticize them. “It’s hard to tell what is more outrageous - Representative Davis’s condescending and personal attack, or his absurd and offensive claim that Barack Obama is not prepared to defend America. Geoff Davis may hide behind offensive tough talk, but he has marched in lock-step with Bush-McCain policies that have devastated our national security, while Barack Obama has stood up against a misguided war in Iraq and worked with respected Republicans like Dick Lugar and Chuck Hagel to secure loose weapons and nuclear materials from terrorists,” Bill Burton, the campaign spokesman said.

Davis later issued an “apology” but it’s a load of crap. He said what was in his heart and in the hearts of many on the right.

Embrace the racist inside, Republicans!

UPDATE: If you want to know why this sort of thing is going to be an ongoing problem for McCain and the GOP as Obama moves up to officially become the nominee look no further than the comments on conservative blogs QandO and Rick Moran. Both McQ and Moran know that this is really really stupid but at least one of their commenters simply cannot see the problem with calling a grown ass black professional man, let alone one as accomplished as Sen. Obama, a “boy”. They simply chalk it up to “political correctness”.

What’s next? Some con calls Obama a n****r and they shrug their shoulders and say “What’s the big deal?” I wouldn’t bet against it.

John McCain Voted Against Civil Rights Act Of 1990, Now Falsely Calls It A Quota

Oh, Johnny Mac. Why you lyin’? This is the kind of stuff Republicans pull then indignantly tell the black community they should vote for them anyways.

Time and time again, McCain was on the wrong side of key debates when it mattered most. In addition to his opposition to a federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., McCain was the deciding vote against overriding President Bush’s veto of the 1990 Civil Rights Act–the first defeat of a major civil rights bill in a quarter of a century. To make matters worse, just last weekend McCain defended the vote by equating it to “quotas,” even though the bill had nothing to do with quotas.

With a record like that, no wonder McCain is working so hard to reinvent himself for the general election.

McCain Voted Against Civil Rights Act of 1990 — Which Failed By One Vote. McCain voted to uphold President Bush’s veto of the 1990 Civil Rights Act. The veto override fell one vote short of the necessary 67 votes, and thus the legislation died — the first major civil rights bill to be defeated in the last quarter century. It would have expanded the reach of several discrimination laws that had been narrowed or overturned by the Supreme Court, as well as authorizing monetary damages under title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which prevents employment discrimination. McCain had also twice previously voted against the conference report version of the bill. [1990 Senate Vote #276, 10/16/1990; 1990 Senate Vote #304, 10/24/1990; 1990 CQ Almanac, p. 60-S]

McCain Uses Loaded Term “Quotas” to Defend Vote. “WALLACE: You’re here today at the Civil Rights Museum, but it has come to our attention that in 1983 you voted against the federal holiday for Martin Luther King. You voted in 1990 against civil rights legislation. Isn’t it going to be hard to reach out to all those groups given your history and the history of the party? MCCAIN: Well, let me say in 1983 I was wrong, and I believe that my advocacy for the recognition of Dr. King’s birthday in Arizona was something that I’m proud of. The issue in the early ’90s was a little more complicated. I’ve never believed in quotas, and I don’t. There’s no doubt about my view on that issue. And that was the implication, at least, of that other vote.” [Fox News Sunday, 4/6/08]

Bill Would Not Have Created Quotas. “Proponents of the bill contend that it essentially would have restored the law of employment discrimination that had been in force for nearly two decades, prior to six recent Supreme Court rulings that made it more difficult for minorities and women to win discrimination suits. They strongly dispute the contention that the new law would result in quotas.” [Washington Post, 10/23/90]

I Love The South!

Sigh.

A statue honoring “Pitchfork Ben” Tillman, one of America’s foremost white supremacists, will stay on the South Carolina State House grounds — at least for now.

The decision was made by Republican state Rep. Greg Delleney, who Thursday morning killed a resolution that would have removed the statue from its prominent spot at the State House front.

“He was a man of his times, honored by the people of his times,” Delleney said after the meeting. “I’m not going to go back and rewrite history.”

But Tillman’s history has already been rewritten by the whites who put up the statue in 1940, said Democratic Rep. Todd Rutherford, the African-American lawmaker who led the push to remove the statue.

The statue’s words avoid mention of what Tillman himself considered his greatest achievements — sanctioning violence against black South Carolinians seeking equal rights and depriving them of the right to vote, Rutherford said.

“The Ben Tillman statue is at best confusing and at worst a lie,” Rutherford said.

I say again: I love the south!

But they’ll try anyways.

John McCain’s Troubling, Deceitful History With Martin Luther King’s Birthday

John McCain is today claiming that though Martin Luther King was killed when McCain was 32 he didn’t understand the “issue” when he was 47, 15 years later. He goes on to treat a commemoration of the leading civil rights figure in U.S. history as if he was just one of the lobbyists he employs on his campaign:

I had come from being in the military to running for Congress in a state that did not have a large African American population.

So is McCain saying that only states with large black populations should or did care enough to vote for Dr. King’s hollday? Or is McCain saying that King and the Civil Rights movement is just something like your local Mason’s lodge?

Using the logic Jon Henke is advocating here, we should believe that all the people in prison are innocent. Why? Because they say so, silly!

“Angry” Kareem

From Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s blog on the LATimes.com:

One of the common myths about me was repeated last week when a friend of mine was playing in his weekly basketball league and a teammate asked him, “Why was Kareem always so angry?” That’s not the first time I heard this charge. What’s weird about it is that every morning when I get out of bed, bluebirds, squirrels, and deer help me get dressed while we sing “We Are the World.” By the way, squirrels really suck at tying shoes. And deer often mumble the lyrics.

Even that doesn’t make me angry.

What’s interesting about the question is that the person who asked the question is white. In fact, no black person has ever asked that question. That’s because they already know the answer. In the 1960s and 1970s, when the civil rights movement was at its most intense and volatile level, I often used my celebrity to speak out against certain injustices. This seemed to irritate some people who expected black athletes to simply be silently grateful for their opportunities and not rock the boat.

Sigh, America. (via)

Amy Sullivan: How The Blacks And Their Churches Ruined The Democratic Party

I try so hard not to write about this racial stuff, but then Amy Sullivan writes this:

But I’ll be back in a few hours to talk about why the Democratic party outsourced religion to black churches, and how that’s hurt the party. It’s also left most Americans with a Disney-fied impression of African-American religious leaders as folks who sit around listening to gospel music all day, spout inspirational phrases to slap on calendars, and generally act like Denzel Washington in “The Preacher’s Wife.”

By “most Americans” she means of course “white Americans”.

You may remember Sullivan as the author of a piece decrying the tepid sports cuture of Washington without once mentioning the Washington Redskins. In that instance, as well, Sullivan substituted white upper class DC for the more mainstream, blacker rest of Washington (aka most people who live in DC). She also has a habit of saying Democrats don’t like religion.

UPDATE: It gets worse:

For decades, the Democratic Party has ghettoized religion, outsourcing it to African-Americans within the party.

As one of the commenters notes:

Yes, I well remember noted African-American and Sunday school teacher Jimmy Carter. African-Americans Bill Clinton and Al Gore both also made a big show of their Baptist faith, while African-American John Kerry frequently mentioned his time as an altar boy.

For the love of God, someone tell Amy Sullivan to STFU.

UPDATE 2: A friend notes: “Ghettoized” religion. Ghetto.
