Glenn Beck has been trying to make a name for himself via books and his CNN show in bringing some kind of counter to Al Gore’s global warming advocacy. The problem is Gore is working with science and facts and Beck is using the tools conservatives always use: horse manure.
From a story Beck has written on CNN.com:
Perhaps most comically, Gore is seen dragging an entire film crew on a jet to India to give a climate presentation to about 100 people. Gore claimed: “We just don’t have any choice. I wish I knew a better way to do it. I constantly ask myself, ‘How can I be more effective in getting this message across?’ ” The most effective thing you can think of is flying halfway across the world to speak with 100 people?
Except Beck twisted the story. From 60 Minutes:
For now he takes his slideshow on the road. 60 Minutes went with Gore to India.
“It’s going to be so hard, so gigantically difficult to solve this problem. And expensive, no?” Stahl asked.
“It’s much more expensive not to solve it,” Gore said.
India is the world’s fourth biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, and in New Delhi Gore was teaching 100 people how to give his slideshow and spread the word.
“You’re giving talks to a hundred people. There are over a billion people in India. I mean, how do you expect to really have any kind of impact?” Stahl asked.
“This is the beginning. And then they will train others. And I will be training others,” Gore said.

The climate crisis continues.
Some 220 square miles of ice has collapsed in Antarctica and an ice shelf about the size of Connecticut is “hanging by a thread,” the British Antarctic Survey said Tuesday, blaming global warming.
“We are in for a lot more events like this,” said professor Ted Scambos, a glaciologist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Scambos alerted the British Antarctic Survey after he noticed part of the Wilkins ice shelf disintegrating on February 28, when he was looking at NASA satellite images.

Conservatives are trumpeting this attack on climate science from Pope Benedict saying we should slow down on dealing with the problem. The Pope is free to say what he wishes, but people like myself are also free to note that the Pope also thought the Catholic church should slow down on rooting out child rapists. So, there’s that.
It is times like this that I’m glad that I’m not tied in to any of these official churches and their inevitably flawed human leadership. My Life, The Universe And Everything is tied in to my own Deity.

The Goracle works in mysterious ways.
Rep. Bob Inglis (R-S.C.), once a
skeptic of global warming, got a hint that the political winds might be
shifting when a longtime supporter warned that he might vote against
Inglis if he “didn’t clean up his act on the environment.”
The warning came from Inglis’ eldest son, Robert Jr., now 22.
His daughter was no less blunt about the congressman’s refusal to
embrace the view that global warming was being caused by human actions
and that a serious response is needed. “I have three more kids coming
up — and they seem to share the same view,” Inglis said.
Family pressure worked. Inglis traveled to Antarctica and, most
recently, to Greenland to witness the effects of rising CO2 levels and
temperatures. He now believes the science behind global warming. And he
believes the politics are equally conclusive: Republicans will “get
hammered” if they do not reckon with the issue soon.

Republican shill/strategist Cheri Jacobus is on CNN claiming that the Nobel Peace Prize committee gave Al Gore the Nobel Peace Prize because… they’re looking for publicity.
That’s right, the Nobel Institute is just all about getting their name out there so they can sell more copies of Nobel magazine. That Gandhi centerfold they had a few months ago was IN FUEGO.
Cheri Jacobus, your Republican idiot of the day!
Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize, suck it, losers.

Last night global warming deniers rejoiced (and got the MSM to cover their b.s. yet again) at some incorrect data in measuring climate change, and used that to claim that it disproves global warming. Except it doesn’t, cause the data was for the U.S. and not the entire globe. Which happens to be the “globe” in global warming.

Newsweek conducts some actual journalism on the oil-industry shills dressed up as scientists and the like who deny global warming in opposition to scientific evidence.
Since the late 1980s, this well-coordinated, well-funded campaign by contrarian scientists, free-market think tanks and industry has created a paralyzing fog of doubt around climate change. Through advertisements, op-eds, lobbying and media attention, greenhouse doubters (they hate being called deniers) argued first that the world is not warming; measurements indicating otherwise are flawed, they said. Then they claimed that any warming is natural, not caused by human activities. Now they contend that the looming warming will be minuscule and harmless. “They patterned what they did after the tobacco industry,” says former senator Tim Wirth, who spearheaded environmental issues as an under secretary of State in the Clinton administration. “Both figured, sow enough doubt, call the science uncertain and in dispute. That’s had a huge impact on both the public and Congress.”
John F. Kennedy: “In the final analysis, we all inhabit the same small planet, we all breathe the same air, we all cherish our children’s future, and we are all mortal.”

Common sense is on something of a streak lately.
The Supreme Court ordered the Environmental Protection Agency on Monday to explain why it has refused to regulate greenhouse gas pollution from cars, putting the Bush administration under pressure from an unusual coalition of environmental groups and leaders of the auto industry to move quickly on global warming.

It was the television programme that set out to show that most of the world’s climate scientists are misleading us when they say humanity is heating up the Earth by emitting carbon dioxide. And The Great Global Warming Swindle, screened by Channel 4 on Thursday night, convinced many viewers that it is indeed untrue that the gas is to blame for global warming.
But now the programme - and the channel - is facing a serious challenge to its own credibility after one of the most distinguished scientists that it featured said his views had been “grossly distorted” by the film, and made it clear that he believed human pollution did warm the climate.
Professor Carl Wunsch, professor of physical oceanography at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said he had been “completely misrepresented” by the programme, and “totally misled” on its content. He added that he is considering making a formal complaint.

They couldn’t let the guy who got more votes than their beloved Bush have a moment in the sun. The right wing noise machine is on the attack against Al Gore, led online by their chief goons Glenn Reynolds and Matt Drudge. Once again, Republican thinking reflects a whackjob fringe. You think they would be used to that by now, and that the media would acknowledge it in their quest to report "both sides" on issues where one side is science and the other is some nut with a sign on the street.
Most Americans believe in global warming, according to the latest FOX News poll, and a majority thinks it is caused at least in part by human behavior, though many believe normal climate patterns are a factor.
The national poll, conducted before the release of the United Nationsâ report on climate change last week, finds that fully 82 percent of Americans say they believe in global warming, up from 77 percent in October 2005, while 10 percent disagree and 8 percent are unsure.
Democrats (91 percent) and independents (84 percent) are much more likely to say global warming exists than Republicans (72 percent), although sizable majorities of all demographic groups are in agreement.
When those who believe in
global warming are asked what they think is the main cause of the
situation, there is widespread belief that human behavior — such as
driving and burning too much fossil fuel like coal and oil — is a
contributor to the problem. Four in ten Americans say people are to
blame outright (41 percent) and another 38 percent think it is a
combination of human action and normal climate patterns. Few believe
that global warming is an entirely natural occurrence (14 percent).
