Cheney Approved Torture And Your President Is A Moron

It’s Friday in America.

Bush administration officials from Vice President Dick Cheney on down signed off on using harsh interrogation techniques against suspected terrorists after asking the Justice Department to endorse their legality, The Associated Press has learned.

The officials also took care to insulate President Bush from a series of meetings where CIA interrogation methods, including waterboarding, which simulates drowning, were discussed and ultimately approved.

A former senior U.S. intelligence official familiar with the meetings described them Thursday to the AP to confirm details first reported by ABC News on Wednesday. The intelligence official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly discuss the issue.

If Rahm Emanuel is going to push to defund Cheney’s office for him obstructing justice, then do it — but don’t just send out a trial balloon. Do it or shut up, because the reason the Dems in congress are sucking is because they’ve been too much talk not enough action so far.

Not Exactly Credible, Is He?

I’m sorry (not really) but the spectre of a sad sack of militarism like Dick Cheney lecturing China for appearing too militaristic is just laughable. This is akin to Britney Spears telling someone that they’re not doing such a great job parenting.

Vice President Dick Cheney said Friday that China’s recent anti-satellite weapons test and a rapid military buildup were "not consistent" with its stated aim of a peaceful rise as a global power.

In a speech during a visit to Australia, Cheney praised China for playing an "especially important" role in six-nation negotiations that recently resulted in a deal with North Korea to eventually end its nuclear weapons programs.

"Other actions by the Chinese government send a different message," Cheney told the Australian-American Leadership Dialogue.

Yes, it’s a good thing Cheney is speaking from the moral authority of leadership that chose a voluntary war using trumped up evidence and denies that the execution of that policy has been an absolute mess. I guess Cheney’s already practicing for his post-vice presidency as a used car salesman.

Then again, that’s really unfair to used car salesmen. They have souls and consciences.

Worst Vice President Ever

Dick Cheney says things in Iraq aren’t terrible.

Q But there is a terrible situation.

THE VICE PRESIDENT: No, there is not. There is not. There’s problems, ongoing problems, but we have, in fact, accomplished our objectives of getting rid of the old regime, and there is a new regime in place that’s been there for less than a year, far too soon for you guys to write them off. They have got a democratically written constitution, first ever in that part of the world. They’ve had three national elections. So there’s been a lot of success.

Can we just air drop his sorry butt into Baghdad?

Oh, Cheney

In an otherwise unsurprising article about how the Bush administration’s only tactic left is to get the same con rubes who voted for them in ‘00, ‘02, and ‘04 to show up at the polls for them (that he is the President of the entire United States is a foreign concept to Bush, and why his poor showing with independents will keep his presidency in the dog house for the remainder of its existence), the worst vice president in American history - Dick Cheney (there is legitimitate competition for Bush being the worst ever - Cheney is in a low class of his own) - he says this:

“Nancy is not in sync with the vast majority of the American people,” Cheney said, referring to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), who would become speaker if Democrats took over the House.

I would like to note for the record that the creepy veep has a net approval rating in all 50 states of a whopping -27%.

That’s about as out of “sync” as you can possibly get.

Reality vs. Dick Cheney, 10/18/06

Dick Cheney on the Rush Limbaugh Show (where he and Bush go when times are tough), 10/17/06:

“If you look at the general overall situation [in Iraq], they’re doing remarkably well.”

Reality, 10/18/06

Ten U.S. troops were killed in Iraq on Tuesday, one of the bloodiest days of the war for American forces outside of major combat operations. With nearly two full weeks to go until the end of October, the month is proving to be devastatingly lethal for both U.S. forces and Iraq’s military and civilian populations.

At least 68 U.S. troops were killed in the first 2 1/2 weeks of October, according to independent databases and wire service counts; last month, 75 American military personnel were killed.

10 troops or 3,000 troops, Dick Cheney and Bush do not care. But you’d think they could be a little realistic for a change.

There They Go Again

If you wanted even more proof that the GOP is desperate and that their rhetorical well is as dry as the Sahara, look no further.

President Bush and his surrogates are launching a new campaign
intended to rebuild support for the war in Iraq by accusing the
opposition of aiming to appease terrorists and cut off funding for
troops on the battlefield, charges that many Democrats say distort
their stated positions.

With an appearance before the American
Legion in Salt Lake City today, Bush will begin a series of speeches
over 20 days centered on the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001,
attacks. But he and his top lieutenants have foreshadowed in recent
days the thrust of the effort to put Democrats on the defensive with
rhetoric that has further inflamed an already emotional debate.

The only way the line of attack works is for Democrats to use the same idiotic responses they’ve used since 2001 - either not responding at all or just parroting the right. Neither works. Americans are looking for backbone, and while the Republicans stand only for disaster, death and continued mayhem and insecurity - they’re standing for something.

Democrats, at long last must stand firm. They must not allow Republicans to continue the appeasement of terrorists and the unnecessary unwarranted killings of our troops in a flawed, failed, and ill-fated Iraqi engagement. Democrats must at long last fully engage the Republican party on the central issue of national security and educate America that the party that led us through the greatest war man has ever known is the party that is more interested in killing, capturing and punishing America’s true enemies than in conducting a all-hat and no cattle photo op policy that is getting people murdered.

Terror is the central issue of our time. Five years ago Al Qaeda attacked us in New York City, Washington D.C, and Pennsylvania. To this day, that mass murder remains unavenged thanks to Republican dithering and appeasement of Al Qaeda and Bin Laden. The Republican party fought John Kerry with more vigor and vitality than they attack Al Qaeda.

They use rhetoric and win elections but do nothing to lead and govern. Democrats wish to defend, secure and unite Americans. The clear choice must be made or we are doomed to continued Republican led "heck of a job", "bring ‘em on" failures.

Cheney As President

Robert Kuttner says what the MSM refuses to report.

Historically, the vice president’s job was to ceremonially preside over the Senate, attend second-tier foreign funerals, and be prepared for the president to die. Students are taught that John Nance Garner, Franklin Roosevelt’s first vice president, compared the job to a bucket of warm spit (and historians say spit was not the word the pungent Texan actually used).

Recent vice presidents Walter Mondale and Al Gore were given more authority than most, but there was no doubt that the president was in charge.

Cheney is in a class by himself. The administration’s grand strategy and its implementation are the work of Cheney– sometimes Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, sometimes Cheney and political director Karl Rove.

Cheney has planted aides in major Cabinet departments, often over the objection of a Cabinet secretary, to make sure his policies are carried out. He sits in on the Senate Republican caucus, to stamp out any rebellions. Cheney loyalists from the Office of the Vice President dominate interagency planning meetings.

The Iraq war is the work of Cheney and Rumsfeld. The capture of the career civil service is pure Cheney. The disciplining of Congress is the work of Cheney and Rove. The turning over of energy policy to the oil companies is Cheney. The extreme secrecy is Cheney and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Why should I believe a single word from Dick “Buckshot” Cheney about Iran? These are the same people that claimed Iraq was minutes away from launching a nuke, and royally screwed up in planning for the Iraq war (leading to the deaths of thousands of Americans). Cheney’s Shot Triggered Heart Attack

Man shot by Cheney has heart attack

The 78-year-old lawyer who was shot by Vice President Dick Cheney in a hunting accident has some birdshot lodged in his heart and he had a “minor heart attack,” a hospital official said Tuesday.

Peter Banko, the hospital administrator at Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial, said Harry Whittington had the heart attack early Tuesday while being evaluated.

What’s Going On?

The vice president shoots someone, and they don’t tell anyone? Something smells like a cover-up.

The more than 18-hour delay in news emerging that the Vice President of the United States had shot a man, sending him to an intensive care unit with his wounds, grew even more curious late Sunday. E&P has learned that the official confirmation of the shooting came about only after a local reporter in Corpus Christi, Texas, received a tip from the owner of the property where the shooting occured and called Vice President Cheney’s office for confirmation.

Cheney Told Aide of C.I.A. Officer, Notes Show

I. Lewis Libby Jr., Vice President Dick Cheney s chief of staff, first learned about the C.I.A. officer at the heart of the leak investigation in a conversation with Mr. Cheney weeks before her identity became public in 2003, lawyers involved in the case said Monday.

Speculation: Cheney told Libby/Rove about Plame, Libby/Rove leak it to the press (Novak, etc.) then when the investigation gets instigated they freak, start lying to keep their stories straight and conspire to keep it quiet. But then the notes unravel the whole thing for Fitzgerald.

Or not.

Addendum: Even if no specific law was broken, shouldn’t it be cause for removal or resignation if the vice president used the power of his office to uncover classified data as fuel for a political vendetta? Spiro Agnew, anyone?

Questions
Have the president or the vice-president been aware that either they or their top staff were the leakers of Mrs. Wilson’s identity, yet have claimed otherwise for two years?

Are the vice president and his subordinates in the business of using classified data to fuel personal attacks on citizens? Is the president aware of this practice and does he condone it? If the president is unaware, why and for how long?

Of the following people and their families, have any of them been investigated by the president and vice president using national security assets to fuel political attacks - John Kerry, John Edwards, Bill Clinton, Howard Dean…?

Which other journalists and pundits have been the recepients of classified leaks from the president’s or vice-president’s office?

Since January 21, 2001, please detail each and every instance of the president, vice president or other White House staff that has given out data gleaned from classified sources to attack political opponents.
