Rhetoric From McCain, Right Wing Talk Helps Terrorists

According to a report from the Homeland Security Department.

Clueless John McCain Still Can’t Understand That Al Qaeda=Sunni

John McCain said in the Petraeus testimony today that Al Qaeda was a “sect of Shi’ites”. Al Qaeda is Sunni.

These are not “gaffes” from John Mccain - who thinks we should stay in Iraq for at least 100 years - he honestly is clueless on these issues and uses his military service as a crutch for just being dumb.

Time Of War

Conservatives are upset at a pro-Jihad blog, claiming that its content is “treason” because the writer was giving aid and comfort to the enemy during a time of war.

When did we declare war?

We didn’t. We haven’t since 1942.

On or just after 9/11 I said we should declare war against Al Qaeda. We haven’t, yet conservatives regularly try to assert powers and exceptions that only apply as a result of a formal declaration of war.

Osama Bin Laden: The Dumb Guy George Bush Can’t Catch

One of the most intriguing things about today’s Bin Laden tape drop (he’s alive, right-wing mythmakers) is how dumb the guy is. His “demands” such as they are are just ridiculous, even for a mass murderer. Like we’ll decide as a nation to become Islamic overnight or something. “Yeah, Bin Laden, America has decided to follow you along.” Sheesh. And we can’t catch him. Still. Six years later.

And It Only Took 5 Years

This plan is the sort of thing people like me have been advocating since about, oh I dunno, 9/12/01?

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld has approved the military’s most ambitious plan yet to fight terrorism around the world and retaliate more rapidly and decisively in the case of another major terrorist attack on the United States, according to defense officials.

Details of the plans are secret, but in general they envision a significantly expanded role for the military — and, in particular, a growing force of elite Special Operations troops — in continuous operations to combat terrorism outside of war zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Developed over about three years by the Special Operations Command (SOCOM) in Tampa, the plans reflect a beefing up of the Pentagon’s involvement in domains traditionally handled by the Central Intelligence Agency and the State Department.

Because they’re so focused on selling the Iraq War mistake, the Bush administration and the media won’t admit that most of the fighting that needs to occur to defeat terror networks doesn’t involving a major league shooting war. Eliminating terror cells and support networks in nations like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia (among others) will take subterfuge and stealth, things our armed forces are capable of no matter how inept their civilian leadership is. There also needs to be - still - more resource sharing among the various agencies involved in this fight. That we’ve allowed these groups to grow while our resources are died up in protection and nation building in Iraq is a travesty. We’ll be dealing with the consequences of that for some time to come.

UPDATE: And look who’s alive and still taunting us.

A Weird Way To Fight Terrorism

Last night rumors swirled that a military strike had killed Ayman al-Zawahiri, one of Bin Laden’s top lieutenants. But now it seems that didn’t happen and now the Pakistani people are pissed. But I found this reaction from Wizbang strange

If Zawahiri was killed it would be a major blow to al Qaeda.

Really? Somehow killing an Al Qaeda second lieutenant almost five years after 9/11 while Al Qaeda has been allowed to grow and attack Bali, Spain, London, and our troops in Iraq — would be “a major blow”? I know about the “soft bigotry of low expectations”, but that’s kind of ridiculous.

9/11 Will Happen Again

It’s going to be worse

The U.S. is at great risk for more terrorist attacks because Congress and the White House have failed to enact several strong security measures, members of the former Sept. 11 commission said Sunday.

“It’s not a priority for the government right now,” said the former chairman, Thomas Kean, ahead of the group’s release of a report Monday assessing how well its recommendations have been followed.

It’s not a priority because its not “sexy” for the Bush administration to govern. No photo ops.

Al Qaeda vs. America

All the jawboning from Bush and Cheney won’t change the actual facts. Al Qaeda is now operating again in Afghanistan. Had we stuck to our guns instead of going off to Iraq, we would have decapitated them in Afghanistan and be able to destroy their other outlets. Instead now, they’re all over the place (Afghanistan, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bali, to name a few) — and you’re fooling yourselves if you don’t think they’re coming here.

A US soldier was killed yesterday by a bomb that exploded near a troop patrol in eastern Afghanistan, and President Hamid Karzai said he expected such attacks to continue ”for much more time to come.”

The attack was carried out a day after suicide bombers rammed cars filled with explosives into NATO forces in two attacks in Kabul. It was the first major assault on foreign troops in Kabul in more than a year.

Yesterday, the death toll rose to nine, as police found more bodies in a ditch, and a wounded man was reported to have died.

Police said Al Qaeda was responsible for the suicide bombings. Such seemingly coordinated attacks are unprecedented in Afghanistan and reinforced fears that Osama bin Laden’s terror network has teamed up with its old ally the Taliban, which claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The idiotic leadership of the Bush presidency is going to make America lose the war on terrorism.

Bin Laden Begats Zarqawi

Amman Bombings Reflect Zarqawi’s Growing Reach

Triple suicide bombings in Jordan this week marked a breakthrough for Islamic guerrilla leader Abu Musab Zarqawi in his efforts to expand the Iraqi insurgency into a regional conflict and demonstrated his growing independence from the founders of al Qaeda, according to Arab and European intelligence officials.

Zarqawi, 39, has sought for years to overthrow the monarchy in his native Jordan. But since he emerged over the past two years as the best-known leader of the insurgency in Iraq, his success in rallying Islamic extremists from other countries to fight U.S. forces there has enabled him to extend his reach and influence, officials and analysts say. His guerrilla network, they say, has established roots in Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Iran.

“This is really alarming, if Zarqawi is able to carry out these kind of attacks in Jordan and if Iraq is able to become the headquarters for terror attacks in the region,” said Mustafa Alani, senior policy analyst for the Gulf Research Center in Dubai. “We’re talking about the emergence of another Afghanistan.”

The War Continues

I don’t know how much longer the right is going to keep on pretending that Americans and American interests don’t continue to be under major threat from Al Qaeda affiliated terrorists every day

Suicide bombers on Wednesday attacked three hotels frequented by Westerners, and at least 18 people were killed and 120 wounded, police said.

Maj. Bashir al-Da aja said officials believe all three blasts were carried out by suicide bombers. The explosions indicated the involvement of al-Qaida, which has launched coordinated attacks on high-profile, Western targets in the past, a police official said.
