Yet another instance of the media trying to swing this thing for McCain and claim Obama to be an elitist. David Brooks claims Obama is too uppity for the salad bar at Applebee’s.
Applebee’s doesn’t have a salad bar.
On MSNBC, David Brooks asserted that “less educated” and “downscale” people “look at [Sen. Barack] Obama, and they don’t see anything,” adding: “And so, Obama’s problem is he doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who could go into an Applebee’s salad bar, and people think he fits in naturally there.” Applebee’s officials have confirmed to Media Matters that its restaurants do not have salad bars.
It’s so intriguing that David Brooks, the consumate DC elitist I saw a few days ago walking out of that stomping ground of the common man - The Council On Foreign Relations - is still pushing this regular guy twaddle.
Me? I’m an elitist. I spend all my time hanging around the champagne fountain at the Sizzler.
Almost worth tuning into PBS–if Brooks is appearing there–to see if Jim Lehrer asks him about it.

It’s the rare person who ever actually sees themselves as part “them”. We all always see ourselves as part of “us”, and Brooks is no different.
For me, it has always been extremely pleasurable when
true elitists (like Brooks) try to speak to the needs
of Everyman–and make a fool of themselves in the process . . .

I guess I’m an elitist too. Applebee’s is overpriced crap loaded with salt and HFCS. Same goes for TGIF, Cracker Barrel and Red Lobster and other “middle America” restaurants.

Actually, being an “elitist” should be a good thing, since that would suggest you were highly skilled or gifted in some way. It would be more accurate (and possibly helpful in the long run) to call Brooks and his DC cohorts classists.
Of course, I’m sure no one will remember the “guy you want to have a beer with” standard that helped the current cartel into power. I guess beer is too elitist. Salad is the true choice of the common man.

High Fructose Corn Syrup is one of the worst things you can eat. Purged that from my diet at the very beginning and it has helped me lose a ton of weight. (Not literally.)
