Michael Medved: Slavery Wasn’t That Bad

Conservative Michael Medved writes a column explaining to us that slavery in America wasn’t that bad and that we need to just get over it and excise the idea that an entire race of people was held in bondage for hundreds of years in the land of the free.

I can’t figure out why there aren’t more black conservatives, what with scholarship like this.

Once upon a time, Medved was a true liberal. He worked on RFK’s campaign. Then he got married, got religion, and completely forgot he was a liberal and turned into a neo-con.

    That comment is a realbeauty.

Good golly what a supremely stupid set of arguments Medved presents. Allow me to summarize:

    1) So what? Somebody else did it before we did.
    2) We didn’t enslave all the Africans. Just some of ‘em.
    3) And we only killed some of those.
    4) We didn’t make any money off of slavery. Honest!
    5) And hey, we’re not doing it now!
    6) Who knows? Maybe your great-grandma woulda been eaten by a lion or an elephant or something.

    Jeez, what a tool!

That’s not the best of. According to the right, rich white people have it JUST AS BAD! They are enslaved by, I kid you not, TAXES!

Man, they are just filled with so much compassion. Why can’t black people feel their love?

I am amazed by the utter stupidity on the left. Liberals must lie and distort to prove their point. The Land of the Free was founded on July 4, 1776. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863. For anyone that is smarter than a 5th grader, that is 87 years. Don’t worry about getting that wrong, the really important thing was how you felt about your answer, not the correctness of it. I’m sure you had a lot of fun riding the short bus to school each day.

“I am amazed by the utter stupidity on the left.”

Wow, you dare call the left stupid after your post. That takes some balls.

Slavery lasted hundreds of years, just because it started before America was an independent country doesn’t mean it is not part of your history for that time.

Humble, is your nickname like some BDSM game you play with your sister? Emanicipation did end slavery but it was hardly the beginning of freedom either for most African Americans, and slavery did exist for over 250 years here. I guess your point is that white Americans get a “bye” for the first 150 years of its colonial history, as if slavery were something imposed on whites by the British crown rather than a profit-making activity for U.S. farmers.

What I love about Medved: the “most horrifying” feature of slavery was not the deaths, not the institution itself or the moral depravity in tolerating it for 15 minutes, let alone 250 years, but that some slave traders lost money when slave ships went down.

I am German-Irish and am approximately as “white” as Casper the Friendly Ghost but Medved and his millions of whining fellow apologists are enough to make me sell bean pies for Louis Farrakhan.

It’s like, whaaaaa???? Did you really just write “The Land Of The Free” when referencing slavery without irony? Now that takes some seriously obtuse thinking … so to does clocking the extent of slavery in America from the founding of the country as if signing the declaration of independence completely erased everything everyone on the continent had done up to that point. Yup, the DOI was just like one great big Do Over! You see there were these things called colonies that existed and allowed slavery for over one hundred years previous. And let’s not forget that England outlawed slavery on its home soil in 1772.

The point being is not that you should go out now to heap ashes on yourself in guilt wracked lamentation. But come on, man, grow the fuck up and accept the history of your country for what it is. Why do you idiots constantly have to reassure yourselves with ridiculous “factoids” that paint this country as the Greatest Country Evah For All Time!1!!? On air, Medved practically swaths himself in the flag at every commercial break for god sakes. Seriously, if you find yourself having to diminish the historical reality of slavery in this country just to feel good about yourself you need some serious help.

Get some fucking therapy and let the adults talk, okay?

Turns out he’s wrong about that too. Lloyd’s of London provided coverage against loss of such “cargo.”

One would think that someone who’s ancestors built the pyramids under slavery would have a little bit more sympathy.

Okay, I know that as liberals, you are not very smart, so I’ll type slowly. I was responding to this statement in the original article that an “entire race of people was held in bondage for hundreds of years in the land of the free.”

I clearly and accurately stated when the Land of the Free was established. I clearly and accurately stated when slavery was abolished. I accurately calculated the difference between these two dates…simple math. Then I clearly pointed out that slavery in America was not “hundreds of years.” A standard liberal tactic is to switch arguments by talking about the time prior to the birth of America, which was a British colony, not the Land of the Free.

Your comments prove the basis of all liberalism…that America is evil. Liberals hate America. They cannot stand when someone states something positive about America. Liberals revel in any distortion that proves their basic premise. Liberals do not want to look at any fact that shows that Democrats wanted slavery and Republicans (yes, Lincoln was a Republican) stopped slavery. It was Democrats that opposed Civil Rights, and it was Republicans that forced Johnson (a Democrat) to sign the Civil Rights Act. Liberals do not want to look at the fact that since the dawn of man, humans have enslaved other humans. Even today, there is slavery in parts of this world. You only want to chant the liberal manta “America is evil. America is evil. America is evil. We hate America. We hate America. We hate America.”

Nobody is saying that slavery was not evil. However, liberals do not want to recognize that good men and women of America ended slavery 150 years ago.

    I clearly and accurately

… disregarded the preceding 150 or so years.

Man, STFU. Take your puppies and sausages version of American history and…. do some real research. No one is saying America is evil. Are you trying to tell us that slavery in America is something positive?

These things happened in our history. Only a tool would pretend otherwise.

“I clearly and accurately stated when the Land of the Free was established.”

First of all, there’s no such place as The Land Of The Free. The United States of America was established in 1789, not 1776, you jingoistic uneducated moron. But if, as this article suggests, the “land of the free” refers not to the fully legalized and independent USA but rather the colonies and establishments that would eventually form the USA, then the article is perfectly accurate. It’s also subtle and intentionally ironic, which conservatives obviously lack the brain power to get.

The rest of your post is just more lies and gobbledegook that says more about you and your ridiculous and callous hate than it does liberals.

“Okay, I know that as liberals, you are not very smart, so I’ll type slowly. I was responding to this statement in the original article that an “entire race of people was held in bondage for hundreds of years in the land of the free.”"

I know that, you fucking asshole. I was pointing out that just because America wasn’t an independent nation at the time doesn’t mean it can ignore its past.

“Nobody is saying that slavery was not evil.”

    Michael Medved did.

“Your Humble Servant educating one liberal at a time”

Bullshit. You are trying to defend your racist cohorts by trying to change the subject.

  13. Gravatar Icon 13 CDWard

Another thing that “Humble Servant” conveniently fails to point out is that such a large percentage of the US population was so wedded to slavery that it took a CIVIL WAR to end it. No “Humble Servant”, the good men and women of America did not end slavery, the Union Army did by crushing the treasonous rebellion of the Confederate States.

  14. Gravatar Icon 14 Humble Servant

Sheeesh, I am amazed by the total stupidity from the the left, but then again, you’re liberals so you can’t help yourself.

“the good men and women of America did not end slavery, the Union Army did”

And the abolitionist movement was non-existent prior to the Civil War?? Are you saying the Union Army was made up of evil men, since you clearly stated they were not “good”??

If you believe the Civil War was about slavery, you are a complete moron. It was about who would have more control the States or the Federal government. That’s why the South was fighting. Slavery was already in decline. All the Union states were already free states. BTW, I wonder why the North was free…maybe because of the good men and women of America. And you think you are part of the reality-base community. I think it is closer to the drug-induced reality community.

I am alwasy amazed by liberals utter hatred of America. You have a little hissy fit anytime says something positive about America. America is good. America will always be good. No matter how much you hate America, America is still good. If you can find a better country than America, then move there. But, you stay here, because it is better than anywhere else.

    As Always,

I HAS big fLaGG!!!!!!! America is TEH AWSUM!1!!@!!

Can we start a LOLwingnut page?

  16. Gravatar Icon 16 CDWard

Sorry “Humble Servant”, but if you read the statements made by each of the Confederate State legislatures as to the reasons they were leaving the Union, being able to keep slavery was ALWAYS the main reason. These people quite literally could not conceive of existing without slavery.

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 CDWard

For an example of the importance of keeping slavery to the Confederate States, look at the “Declaration of the causes which impel the State of Texas to secede from the Federal Union” (From the Texas State Library web site at http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/ref/abouttx/secession/2feb1861.html):

“We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of the various States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully held and regarded as an inferior and dependent race, and in that condition only could their existence in this country be rendered beneficial or tolerable.

That in this free government all white men are and of right ought to be entitled to equal civil and political rights; that the servitude of the African race, as existing in these States, is mutually beneficial to both bond and free, and is abundantly authorized and justified by the experience of mankind, and the revealed will of the Almighty Creator, as recognized by all Christian nations; while the destruction of the existing relations between the two races, as advocated by our sectional enemies, would bring inevitable calamities upon both and desolation upon the fifteen slave-holding States.”

  18. Gravatar Icon 18 SpiderJ

America is good. America will always be good. No matter how much you hate America, America is still good.

I think you mean that America is double-plus-good.

I don’t remember the last time I saw somebody this utterly dazzled by the myth of our own pureheartedness. It’s true what Franken has always said about conservative love for America being the same love a three year-old feels for Mommy.

One can still love America and acknowledge that it has made a number of horrific mistakes and dishonorable decisions. At least, most adults can do so.

If you believe the Civil War was about slavery, you are a complete moron. It was about who would have more control the States or the Federal government.

There it is. The big giveaway. You can always tell who’s a neo-confederate white supremacist when they start with this crap.

You know, the one that says “Imagine… No Liberals”

I’ve been imagining that for a long, long time, which is why I’m a radical.

Like our host said acouple of years ago, Christofascists and apologists for evil don’t need to be brought into our community and given a big hug while we all sing “Kumbaya.”

    They need to be stopped.

Which is why Clinton or somebody like her needs to be on the ticket. We need a wartime consigliere.
