Maryland gets even more progressive and realistic with new sexual education guidelines. When I have kids, I’ll be glad that they go to school here.

“When I have kids…”?!?!
You mean Miss Alba is…is…expecting?!?
Awesome news.
Why is this such a big deal? Are parents not capable of teaching their kids things such as this?
Never ceases to amaze me how giddy people can get when the state gets more parenting responsibilities as if people are incapable of doing it on their own.
Spin spin spin until you fall.
Jay is right. I totally agree that the state is getting far too much parenting responsibilities.
Time in school should be reserved ONLY for things that parents are incapable of doing.
I can’t wait until they stop teaching math. What parent doesn’t know how to add or subtract? Our schools should not be wasting our children’s time with things that their parents ALREADY KNOW.
What an insult!
Are parents not capable of teaching their kids things such as this?
Given the rate of unwanted teen pregnancy, I’d guess not.
Ideally, parents teach their kids this stuff and it never has to come up in school. But we do not live in an ideal world and we’re better off when kids learn this stuff rather than making it up as they go along.
The role of our schools is education. Reading, writing, math, etc.
Frankly, I would find it rather stupid to see my property taxes being used to create DVD’s to show a kid how to put a condom on.
And we wonder why our students lag behind the rest of the industrialized world in subjects like math and science. But hey, at least Cellulose’s kid will know how to put on a rubber and why his buddy Jeff likes to wear women’s underwear.
What’s next? A field trip to CVS to discuss the different types?
The role of our schools is education. Reading, writing, math, etc.
But not biology!! No, no, no, no!
I feel obligated to protest this for some reason.
Oh that’s biology? I must really be far removed from school. When I took biology in school we dissected crawfish and frogs.
Now we have instructional DVD’s to watch.
1st Period - English Lit
2nd Period - Algebra II
3rd Period - Ramses or Trojans?
4th Period - Study Hall
Lunch
5th Period - Best Pantyhose For Hairy Legs
Oh I’m not protesting it Ringo. I just think it’s stupid and not really something that should be celebrated.
Oh that’s biology? I must really be far removed from school. When I took biology in school we dissected crawfish and frogs.
Every year from eighth to twelfth grade? Poor frogs!
Then maybe you had that boys-only “health” class taught by the assistant football coach?
OMG HOW DID YOU KNOW IT WAS ME
Certainly sounds like you’re protesting it one way or another.
Do some of you guys still do dissection? Only thing I ever dissected was a dandelion.
Learning how to dissect a crayfish isn’t nearly as important as knowing how to prevent teen pregnancy and avoid STD’s. Look what sex ed could have done for Jay’s parents.
Then maybe you had that boys-only “health” class taught by the assistant football coach?
Nah. Actually, I had the once a quarter health class in high school. We covered the scientific aspects of child birth, sexuality, etc.
It’s good to see we’ve progressed to teaching boys to make sure that condoms go on their peckers and not their nose and that Dave down the street is merely “celebrating his self discovery” when you see him wearing his sisters clothes.
Learning how to dissect a crayfish isn’t nearly as important as knowing how to prevent teen pregnancy and avoid STD’s.
Well, that’s not exactly what is going on.
Look what sex ed could have done for Jay’s parents.
Good one!
“It’s good to see we’ve progressed to teaching boys to make sure that condoms go on their peckers and not their nose and that Dave down the street is merely “celebrating his self discovery” when you see him wearing his sisters clothes.”
Works for me. Maybe with a comprehensive sex ed class not as many different kids would be assaulted and killed because of their orientation. Can’t imagine why someone would have a problem with that. This type of class plus good classes on handling money are important steps to giving children what they need to live life.
Jay, first off I find your interest in the sciences intriguing considering the disdain the right has for science and the funding of science education. Anyways, as I said, I would love for there to be no need for this in school - but as others have pointed out, the numbers make it clear they’re not doing their job. So it is left to the schools to have well-designed, organized sexual education. It’s a public health issue, and while not ideal, better they learn it from the gym teacher than learning you can’t get pregnant standing up from their buddy.
I know you’re bitching just to bitch, but what you chose to complain about is just kind of silly.
Maybe with a comprehensive sex ed class not as many different kids would be assaulted and killed because of their orientation.
Yeah, well what about the fat kids? What about the ‘weird’ kids? What about the kids with the funny looking eye? What about the poor kid who has to wear the same clothes all the time? We don’t seem to focus any special education on them to prevent them from being assaulted, mocked and abused on a daily basis. I know. I’ve been on the receiving end and the giving end. Therefore, why is cross-dressing part of a sex ed lesson?
Oliver, while I find the idea to be noble, you keep focusing on teenage pregnancy and that’s not what that article focuses on.
You do realize that condoms already come with instructions, correct? Is it necessary to have a DVD presentation? Or is that for the benefit of the students that cannot read?
With all due respect, the public schools in this country as a whole have a very shitty history dating back over the last 35-40 years as they started to make these changes that were supposed to have been beneficial.
It’s the cynic in me I guess, but these changes you’re applauding won’t do much good at all.
the public schools in this country as a whole have a very shitty history dating back over the last 35-40 years as they started to make these changes that were supposed to have been beneficial.
Which changes are those, Jay?
Oddly enough that “shitty history dating back over the last 35-40 years” that Jay refers to coincides with the time period that extreme right-wing conservatives have been saying that schools are “shitty”. Schools in my area aren’t bad, maybe Jay needs to move to a little better community.
Sex ed saves society money down the line. That extra cent on your property taxes will pay off for you by reducing teen moms and reducing STDs, which would each raise your health insurance rates, and which burden all sorts of systems. Public health is one of the most cost-efficient investments a society can make — no wonder conservatives hate it. It’s actually logical.
Maryland has some of the best public schools in the country. We’re also one of the bluest states.
As a parent, you will change your mind when you do have a daughter or a son.
But don’t let a little thing like reality get in your way.
La Flamme,
I do have kids–two of them to be exact! I want them to learn about sex ed. What’s wrong with augmenting my home parenting with school-based education? Please inform us with comment based on “a little thing like reality”. Seriously, cite the data you base your comment on or don’t comment.
