How dumb is Hollywood actor Fred Thompson to connect the one bloc of Hispanics who vote Republican with terrorists?
Taking a swipe at a potential GOP presidential rival, Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday criticized Fred Thompson for suggesting illegal Cuban immigrants pose a terrorist threat.
"I was appalled when one of the people running for or about to run for the Republican nomination talked about Cuban refugees as potential terrorists," Clinton told Hispanic elected officials. "Apparently he doesn’t have a lot of experience in Florida or anywhere else, and doesn’t know a lot of Cuban-Americans."

All this is going to do, this early in the game is focus more attention on Fred Thompson. Cubans are very good at cutting through media distortions. They have first hand experience with how far off base media coverage of Castro’s Cuba. They have killed the roaches in the emergency rooms.
This is just going to focus the attention of conservative Republicans on Thompson. When they read what he said and how it was reported they will just go ho hum.
Hillary attacking Thompson this early is just going to make Republicans more interested.
I read his response in his blog and it is well reasoned. In contrast all Hillary has going for her is Shrill, and she used to sleep with Bill (who hasn’t) Edwards can’t even face Ann Coulter down without help from his wife.

I’m betting that in September Newt will join the battle. I’m sure he thinks he’ll take over top spot, but I’m not as convinced.
If he does, it would be a great victory for the Democrats as the likely pairing of Newt vs. Clinton would remind voters of the 90s and the impeachment battle. And despite what Republicans think, Clinton is loved by a lot more people than Newt. During impeachment Clinton’s popularity grew.

A lot of Republicans see him as old school, connected more with Reagan then with Dubya and that could be enough to get him the nomination.

The reason that Hillary attacks Fred is that a) it’s a free punch, and b) it solidifies Hillary’s meme that it’s the Republicans, not Obama, who are her real opponents. This does two things: a) it hurts Obama without humiliating him and b) it allows her to be “first mover” in the volleys against the GOP. NOT smacking Thompson would have been malpractice.
