Heroes: How To Stop An Exploding Man

NBC Heroes

*** SPOILERS ***

So, overall I was pleased with the episode. They wrapped up the major storyline (hello, Lost, I’m looking at you) and gave a heck of a teaser for the fanboys (like me) to ponder over the summer (they finally found a link to the eclipse we see every week, but had to go back almost 400 years to make it).

- Nathan was pissing me off all episode because I felt that he really had made a turn to evil completely, and he still was about 90% with the plan. I guess the whole thing was that had Claire not been saved she would not have been the linchpin in Nathan’s final act. So saving the cheerleader was a catalyst for saving the world.

- I was actually fooled by Shapeshifter Woman. I thought “Of all the times for Nikki to have one of her existential throw downs she picks NOW?” Does the fact that she saw her own reflection yet retained Jessica’s super strength (that whack on Sylar was soooo satisfying) mean that she’s integrated both sides of herself? In a perverse sort of way I wanted D.L. to be dead.

- How is Parkman not dead? His power is reading minds, not surviving five bullets to the chest. Or is it?

- I loved the whole Hiro Is A Badass element of the story. Yes, Hiro allows the nerds to vicariously through him because he’s living the dream. But, so what?

- Clearly Sylar is not dead. Why didn’t Hiro or someone else cut off his head before he could crawl down the sewer? He’s got Claire’s regeneration powers and a blade to the back isn’t going to stop him (remember she survived Ted Sprague’s gigantic explosion at her house). Plus he’s got all the other powers he’s amassed and no more Peter to counter him.

- Are they a superteam or not now? Even though he’s apparently powerless, Noah (HRG) is clearly the leader and most knowledgeable about the whole bad guy network and Molly knows the Big Evil Guy only she has seen outranks Sylar. Is everyone just going to go home now or are they going to Heroes HQ to come up with codenames? Heh.

Sylar doesn’t have Claire’s power, or she’d be dead, eh?

Oh yeah, you’re right. I keep forgetting that. So how the heck did he survive?

  3. Gravatar Icon 3 SpiderJ

Sylar survived because he has the super power of Writer Not Done With This Character, even though the Story Is.

Unimpressed with this episode; I think NBC did the show a disservice by not giving it a two-hour season finale to take more time with it.

I was just so proud of Nathan and his absolute love for his brother.

Was he always just playing mama or did he just make up his mind to save Peter from killing all those people?

Hey, and wasn’t it surprising that SO MUCH of New York was empty all the time, I didn’t see ANYBODY who wasn’t a cast member wandering around.

How come DL is still alive?

Where does the Painter fit into all of this?

To someone like me who has never seen the show and knows nothing about it, this post has a certain zen-like poetry to it.

I’m not being snarky, I honestly enjoyed it.

Sylar after being stabbed by Hiro is lying on the floor and you see the flashing images of the fufutre with the last image of him lying on the floor, with the final image of Sylar with that ‘grey super power eye look’ which they get when they’re doing something super human. makes me wonder why his eyes went that colour? what was he doing? anyone?

They kept mentioning that Peter should be able to survive the explosion, since he has the ability to regenerate, so I expect he’ll return later.

I figure that the whole gang will end up at the hospital since Matt and DL are there, and afterwards will gather together if only because a) Bennett wants to find his family again and take down the rest of the organization, which would be in everyone’s best interest at this point.

Yes, I did find the emptiness of NYC curious.

The eye thing I think was only done by three people - the painter and Peter and Sylar when they absorbed his power.

And you’re right, Peter could survive the explosion but my assumption is that his brother flew him to at least outer space, and how would he survive (I’m assuming Nathan can’t breathe in space, which could be wrong and then his brother would have absorbed that, so…).

Yeah, this would have done a bit better as a 2hr episode but honestly still a heck of a lot more engaging than 80% of what’s on.

The blast was clearly atmospheric…notice the clouds moving away in a circular fashion? So, I expect Peter to return…though he may carry a certain amount of trauma from the experience.

Also, Hiro in feudal Japan? Love it! Could he “sire” a new group of Powers; passing traits on to each generation to come?

I don’t even think Nathan is necessarily dead. When Peter was very close to exploding, he could have pushed Nathan away.

Dunno. Guess we’ll find out if that actor’s contract is renewed for next season.

    1. Both Peter and Nathan could still be alive if Peter absorbed Nathan’s flying ability (which I thought he already did, actually) and can control it. He could have flown off by himself before exploding.
    2. I bet one of those samurai is Kensei, the swordmaster.
    3. Wasn’t Parkman wearing a bulletproof vest? Otherwise there would have been a lot more blood, surely.
    4. The Big Evil Person could be Ma Petrelli. And what are the odds she bumped off their father?

I had the same thought about Peter–”why didn’t he fly himself off?”–but then I thought back, and I don’t think Peter has ever been able to use two powers simultaneously. Since he was already in the middle of going nuclear, he needed Nathan to fly him away.

Nathan could have survived; if he’d gotten Peter high enough to let him go and then zipped away.

One excellent theory I’ve heard is that Takezo Kensei (who I believe that was at the end of the episode) is going to be revealed to be Hiro’s father…that his power has been some form of prodigious longevity. He did, after all, say he’d been waiting a long time for another Nakamura to ascend.

The last thing that I saw in Sylar’s eye was an image of himself lying on the ground, which I originally took to mean that his last vision was of himself dying.

Then again, Isaac’s paintings were never interpreted 100% correctly…Claire wasn’t the dead cheerleader and Peter died but came back.

Of course Peter isn’t dead. If he could survive a nuclear blast (in the alternate future,) he can survive a nuclear blast and a long fall, right?

That’s assuming the blast would render him at least “temporarily dead” the way he and Claire both died previously. If not, he could, of course, just fly himself to the ground.

I suspect his big bro is alive, too, but who knows.

Sylar has been surviving things normal people can’t survive all season. It’s clear he took someones power and it gave him greater resilience(though not immunity) to physical damage. Theres no way he went off those bleachers and walked away unharmed while Peter was a pile of goo from the same incident. Not without some sort of improved durability.

I thought Sylar landed on Peter, and even then, he limped away.

On our couch of Hero worship, the second that Molly mentioned a super baddie, we all yelled “Mama Patrelli!” She’s doing a fine job of dripping evil.

Mark me in the Nathan flew Peter up, dropped him, and did the sonic boom. Both characters will be back, IMO.

I’m SO glad they didn’t kill off Ando. He’s one of my favs.

Oh, and I expect to see some radiation sickness in NY next year. Continuity, people.

Sigh. It’s going to be a long summer.

    Jet -

NBC.com implies that there will continue to be Heroes-related extras throughout the summer at the website. Which is a relief.

For as bad as Ma Petrelli is, Molly did say “he” can see her.

Anybody else wonder if Dad isn’t as dead as we think he is?

  21. Gravatar Icon 21 Just John

Sylar could still be dead. Maybe his body was dragged into the sewer.

  22. Gravatar Icon 22 Duros62

Yeah, this would have done a bit better as a 2hr episode but honestly still a heck of a lot more engaging than 80% of what’s on.

Right on. I think it should be 2 hours >i>anyway.

But if that was an atmospheric blast, wouldn’t there be an EMP that would shut down the city?

  23. Gravatar Icon 23 scott_api

I think you all missed something. Peter said, and I quote “I absorbed his power, it’s too much. I can’t do anything” to Nathan. that is when Nathan flew him away.

    That being said:

Ando is alive - SFC!!! I was so worried he would be toast. Parkman is breathing. Obviously, Suresh has super healing powers with his messenger-bag of life. He saved DL, he saved Molly, he saved Parkman. The lone Samurai was Kensei (notice his banner?)

Final question - Is Shaft (Richard Roundtree) going to be around next season? Does Peter go back and commune with his old teacher whenever he runs into a conundrum? That would rock. And might give us an idea of why the building is so important (besides being OW’s Heroes World HQ)

Sorry to ramble. Just re-watched the ep and had to blast out the theories before my kids turned my mind into jello for the night (that seems to be their superpower)

My question is why peter of the future has a huge scar on his face. Thought he was all about regeneration!?
