Looks like the most recent Republican darling, Fred Thompson, was pro-choice before he was pro-life.
In the same interview last weekend in which he admitted to thinking about a possible White House bid, former Sen. Fred Thompson (R) also said he’s pro-life and would like to see Roe v. Wade overturned. In past interviews and news clippings, however, Thompson was identified as being pro-choice and against making early-term abortions a crime — although he did favor strict limits on abortion.
What’s kind of sad is that the Republican party was once somewhere where people with moderate positions on the issues could become a leader, but as they gave over control of the party to the radical evangelicals with folks like Dobson, Falwell, etc. there’s no room for these guys anymore.
I mean, not really that sad since my own party’s tent just grows larger.
Perhaps you might enlighten us as to the identities of the moderates in the Democratic Party, Oliver?
Frank does have a point: six years of “uniter not divider” Bush, six years of corrupt and incompetent administrtion, twenty years or so of GOP fear mongering, swiftboating, and ratfucking has definitely had a polarizing effect.
On the other hand, weren’t wingers like Frank telling us that all those new democrats that were elected in November were “moderate” or even “conservative”?

Rigggght. When the Democrats actually field a Presidential candidate that believes in anything other than abortion on demand, then you can talk about how that tent is growing larger. Until then, you have sign that says, “Pro-life candidates not allowed” planted right outside.

Tim Russert was asking Senator Reid about a symbolic vote Sen. Reid took against a sense of the Senate resolution declaring support for Roe v. Wade. He refused to state he disagreed with Roe v. Wade, citing the fact that his “sister,” Barbara Boxer supports Roe v. Wade.
When asked whether it would be a good thing if Roe v. Wade were overturned, he answered, “Oh, I think it would be very, very hard for everybody.

And Reid has been a Senator since 1986, I was referring to the freshman, and to Schumer’s strategy.

Coburn’s a mixed bag. Just because he can recognize a boondoggle when he sees it doesn’t make him a sensible person (keep in mind, he basically won his seat by being more of a gay-basher than the conservative Democratic candidate. )

Yet somehow, you keep raising this irrelevant point about Reid being the top Democrat in the Senate as if it means anything on a national stage.
Like I said, when the Dems nominate a guy like Reid to run for President, then you can start yapping about ‘big tens.’ Until then, the Democratic Party is a party of bunches of little tens that certain people must fit or else they’re told to go elsewhere.
