Democrats 2007: Maryland’s New Governor

As a born and bred Marylander I say YES!

Martin O’Malley became Maryland’s 61st governor just after noon today in the state Senate chamber, where he took the oath of office before hundreds of elected officials and dignitaries.

O’Malley, who turns 44 tomorrow, defeated Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. in the November election to recapture the State House for Democrats. He spoke a few words in the Senate chamber ceremony, thanking the people of Maryland for the trust they have placed in him to lead the state.

“We will remember the call of Frederick Douglass, that we are all one and we must act as one if we are to succeed,” O’Malley said.

I’m assuming those are his children in the photo. The little boy on the left is hilarious.

My only issue with O’Malley being elected (I voted for him, get that out in the open immediately) is that we now have 1 party rule in MD. You can see how disasterous that has been in Washington, DC. The 2 greatest economic expansions in my lifetime were under divided government (Reagan w/Dem congress and Clinton with GOP congress). Maybe Ehrlich wasn’t the answer, maybe O’Malley is. But I am more comfortable with checks and balances, and I am not too sure that O’Malley will be checked or balanced by the MD legislature.

DC had one-party rule: the wrong party. We’re going into a new golden age in Maryland with our Democratic legislature and Democratic governor.

Congrats on your new governor. And while we’re up, San Francisco shouldn’t be the only place that thanks you for Nancy Pelosi.
