Michael J. Fox, Ben Cardin and the Democratic party support potentially life-saving stem cell research.
Michael Steele, George W. Bush and the Republican party do not.
These are the stakes.
But hey, Michael Steele likes puppies.
UPDATE: Wow, the Steele campaign must really want to lose.
Steele campaign spokesman Doug Heye agreed, saying he considered the ad “in extremely poor taste.”
Yes, idiot Doug Heye (who was a skybox guest of criminal lobbyist Jack Abramoff by the way), thinks that Mr. Fox is in “extremely poor taste” to support one politician who would support science that could help people with a disease like his versus one who compares it to -I’m not making this up - Nazism. How soon before Steele joins his fellow Republicans to say Mr. Fox is faking it?
Ugh, I listened to the Limbaugh quotes on Michael J. Fox this morning on The Young Turks.
Evil. That’s the only way to describe him.
And I no longer feel that listeners of Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, etc. are naively misled sheep. These people aren’t being misled. They are being FED. They crave the bigoted, spiteful, homophobic, xenophobic CRAP that these people spew.
It’s not about “facts” or “truths”. It’s about someone saying all of the hateful things they themselves feel. That’s why it doesn’t matter how many times you point out that their media heroes get the facts wrong or straight-up LIE. They don’t care. They’re getting their daily fix of soul-blackening evil.
To Hell with them all.

Dan Riehl:
“Yes, one of the Jerky Boyz, Michael J. Fox supports McCaskill…so I don’t feel a need to worship at his scientifically shaky position, just now…Ya never know when something like a Michael J Fox commercial is going to come along and shake things up.”
See, Fox was shaking in the video. Get it?
Well he must be faking in this one too right? I mean why else would he be moving around like that if not because he was refusing to take his medication in order to better pretend he has Parkinson’s? I mean sure, the fact that he’s able to move at all is actually more proof that he’s actually taking as much of his medication as possible and it could be argued that his acting skills go directly into appearing as composed as he is given his condition, but dont you realize that objective fact works exactly counter to reality in LaLa-Wood? Think, McFly!
Clearly the footage of a prominent Parkinson’s sufferer discussing the potential benefits of Stem Cell research is proof alone of how utterly horrible such research is, and thats exactly why we need strong, wise, brilliant, mighty and verile men like Michael Steele in the U.S. Senate. Just ask convicted rapist Mike Tyson.
Lets just put the shoe on the other foot…
If a republican candidate had trotted out an alzheimer-ridden senior citizen to extol the virtues of the medicare drug plan, how loud would the howls of leftist rightious indignation be?
Yet, putting a guy with a progressive neurological disease on camera at his absolute worst (and we know he can do better, cause he still does tv…), that is just all for the common good?
hyp.o.crite.
By the way, since when did “guilt by association” become a democratic ideal? I seem to recall a lot of squawking about that when o’le Joe McCarthy was doing it. But now, if you use the same urinal as Abramoff, you are automatically labeled a felon by the leftists…
Except the senior with Alzheimer’s is screwed on the Medicare drug plan.
The howls would be loud, Pedro, because there are very few virutes of the medicare drug plan. Now, if your strawman candidate trots out a lobbyist for the pharmaceutical companies to extol the virtues of the medicare drug plan, I could understand it.
Really Oliver?
Why EXACTLY is that? You keep spouting off comments about how this or that is “bad” but never seem to come out with details backing it up. I know the fear-mongering that left does is considered de rigour these days, but I think a little evidence is in order…
By the way, since when did “guilt by association” become a democratic ideal?
When the “association” in question includes accepting bribes from crooked lobbyists, Peed’. Did you miss it? Mr. Heye was one of the many ‘Publicans who rode the Abramoff gravy train.
A sick person in an ad extolling Medicare would be like those adverts you sometimes get at Christmas fronted by cartoon turkeys.
No one labeled Heye as a criminal, but it’s easy to say he’s none too bright given his penchant for accepting gifts from Abramoff -or his recent Nazi analogy.
Oh, look -
“”When outraged Republicans raised a ruckus outside the Miami-Dade County elections office last week, some protesters at the door weren’t local citizens. They were Capitol Hill aides on all- expenses paid trips, courtesy of the Bush campaign. Right up front on television images of the event last Wednesday were Thomas Pyle, an aide to GOP Rep. Tom DeLay, and Michael Murphy, who works for a DeLay fund-raising committee. Doug Heye from California Rep. Richard Pombo’s office also was in the fray….Behind the rowdy rallies in South Florida this past weekend was a well-organized effort by Republican operatives to entice supporters to South Florida….The biggest contingent appears to have hailed from within the marbled walls of the Capitol complex in Washington…. –WSJ, 11/27/00″
“If a republican candidate had trotted out an alzheimer-ridden senior citizen …”
It would indeed be an outrage if any ill or incapacitated person was “trotted out” in front of cameras to push a political message as the phrase “trotted out” suggests the use of coercion and a degree of unwillingness on the part of the participant.
But pedro, are you suggesting that Fox was “trotted out”? Are you suggesting that Fox is making these ads against his free will or with some reluctance that required a degree of coercion to be overcome? As if he had no choice in the matter?
Pedro’s sad attempt at deflection is all too typical of the right. When confronted with the reality of his sides own disgusting tactics, he invented a fantasy scenario to blame on Democrats. The fact that he managed to attack Fox’s sincerity in the process, suggesting he was “trotted out,” is just bonus slime.
Way to go pedro.
Ian -
So the conservative position is that since Parkinson’s is moderately controllable via medication, that no research should be done to find a cure?
If Fox is off his medication during these ads, it’s ostensibly to show how bad the symptoms can be. If he’s actually on the medication, that means the symptoms are even worse.
But in either case, are you arguing that the medication should be “good enough” for Fox and other Parkinson’s sufferers?
So Ian, you are also claiming he’s faking it?
“If a republican candidate had trotted out an alzheimer-ridden senior citizen …”
-Been there, done that.
Hey, Ian. Biology lesson, genius.
Here’s why you’re retarded and also sicken me. It’s the medication that causes the particular spasms you see in the adverts. Those aren’t the tremors you associate with Parkinson’s. Those are side-effects of taking a lot of dopamine agonists, the things that mimic the chemical the brain uses to lubricate certain parts of the central nervous system. These are the things he’s been taking for, probably, about 15 years now.
So, yes, I am happy to go on record as saying that Michael J. Fox is regularly taking his medication when he does these things. Now shut up.
Rush “Big Pharma” Limbaugh has been attending correspondence schoool at the Bill Frist School of Remote Video Diagnosis.
“I would like to see you go on record saying Michael J. Fox is regularly taking his medication when he does these type of commercials.”
Well, we now have two regular trolls calling into question Fox’s sincerity.
What wonderful example of true conservative principles. Real “party of ideas” stuff there, fellas.
Suck it up, Ian. Iran-Contra sickened alot of Niacraguans -with bullets.
PD100, you insensitive bastard! Reagan’s not even dead! Just the other day his eyes followed my finger and a balllon.
Back later, with more sharp and precise medical analysis from the right wing, who would NEVER use the medically disabled to pimp their own agenda. WAAAAAAAAAAAAA…
I’m telling you guys. That 30-40% of “Americans” that still support this criminal organization are NOT misled or naive. They are down with the evil. The WANT war. They WANT devisivness. They WANT bigotry, homophobia and xenophobia.
That’s what you have clowns like Ian and dr pedro defending the most dispicable of acts. No person with a good soul would do such a thing.
“For the record, I’m for stem-cell research, just not for boobs using their own disease for political gain.”
Here, of course, is Ian using his obvious and tragic brain damage for political gain.
Big Pharma is just doing his duty. We’re all talking about what a jerkoff he is (not news, really) instead of what this issue is really about.
A very large number of wingnuts want to legislate their theocratic AND biological ignorance on the rest of us. As the rest of the world passes us by in this research, the US in mired in a battle between know-nothings who think their ideology and braggadoccio trump 400 yrs of Enlightenment, and the Sane, *Real* Moral Majority. We prefer modern technology with compassion and empathy for chronic disease sufferers over charlatans cherry picking bronze age goatherder’s scribblings.
I pray to the Flying Spaghetti Monster daily that those who use Stem Cell Research as a bludgeon to keep political power for themselves on the backs of the Ignorant will precisely receive a disease that requires a Stem Cell derived therapy to cure. But don’t fret about that horrible prayer I make; I also wish to see you cured via Stem Cell derived therapy. Just so I can see your humbled, hypocritical face (well, the latter for sure).
I bet about 99.9% of Red State Moron Fundies would knock over their own sick child to get at pills derived from Stem Cell Research to save their own lives. Rationalizing it the whole time. “Just for me, not for thee”. “Jeebus wants me to live and continue His good work of lowering (my own) taxes and forcing Southern Baptist (only!) prayers in all schools!”.
It doesn’t matter if Fox is on or off his meds. He HAS the disease. Stem Cell Research offers hope for a cure for others. And only the religious right gives a crap about this issue and only as a political wedge. The rest of the American People, as always, are pragmatic. It’s a ‘no brainer’ for them. And any way you look at it, Fox is entitled to be pro-research. Only he’s not a hypocrite.
Yes, we all know what great source of non-partisan news and information THE CAMPAIGN WEBSITE OF HIS OPPOSING CANDIDATE FOR THE US SENATE IS.
Why won’t he say he’s off them now?Because he clearly isn’t, as evidenced by the chorea he displays in the ads. See my previous post. Or do you have a blind spot for being proven wrong?
Yeah, Rep. Cardin voted against crap stem cell research legislation. Shocker.
Lookie here, Ian can’t even spell Hollywood.
/ either that, or it’s an example of lame humor.
And still he can’t acknowledge my proving him wrong.
So Nimrod, have now decided that you have been proven wrong in you conclusion that Fox just controlled his disease through his superior acting skill?
I mean, since you are so anxious for people to acknowledge their mistakes here…
Oh, and Bigby…can you please explain this one
“….Ignorant will precisely receive a disease that requires a Stem Cell derived therapy to cure”.
Can you please name 3 embryonic stem cell derived cures? Please?
Wasn’t ther some rumor that stem embryonic cell research was making great strides in curing people who were born with two assholes?
Eureka, Pedro and Ian! You’re in luck!
“…if you’re going to run an ad using a Hollyweird actor…”
Um, Ian, you consider Michael J. Fox, of all people, representative of “Hollyweird” is typically used in a pejorative sense to describe Los Angeles’ greater tolerance for eccentrict and odd behavior in its, particularly, film industry-related, residents.
Are you suggesting that Michael J. Fox, of all people, is representative of that side of Hollywood?
Are you a total idiot?
Oh and Ian, Cardin didn’t vote against the stem cell research bill. A voted against a stem cell related bill.
He actually voted in favor of the stem cell research bill, you know, the one that’s actually called the Stem Cell Research Bill.
Cardin did indeed, however, vote against the Alternative Stem Cell Therapies Act, sponsored by Rick Santorum.
Cardin voted in favor of the Stem Cell Research Bill of 2005 and to overturn Bush’s veto on stem cell reseach.
Hey Ian, you wanna show us where Cardin (my Rep, btw) voted AGAINST stem cell research? He voted to OVERRIDE Bush’s Veto. *And* he voted AYE on HR 810.
As for the Senate vote:
S. 2754, the Alternative Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies Enhancement Act, would have required the Secretary of Health and Human Services to research ways to isolate and produce stem cells without harming an embryo. S. 2754 passed the Senate by a vote of 100-0. The House, however, had agreed to bring S. 2754 up for a vote under one condition, or rule – that it would pass only if two-thirds of the representatives voted yes. S. 2754 did not receive support from two-thirds of the members of the House and therefore did not pass. It was never presented to the President for signature or veto.
Huh. Maybe Cardin had a REASON to
vote nay? GOP stacks the deck (explicitly to thwart the House bill cuz they’re theocratic nutjobs), Cardin doesn’t bite the hypocritical, pathetic politcal gamemanship of the Majority Party, then jackass Steele beats him over the head with his nay vote at the same time STEELE compares stem cell research to the Holocaust (and flip flops, saying HE’D vote FOR stem cell
research…cuz he’s a panderer and knows progressive Maryland WANTS the research done in MD!!!).
Only one party, the one that controls all branches of government, wants to ban stem cell research. And if they maintain their stranglehold on Congress, they WILL line up, wingnuts and ‘moderates’ alike, marching in lockstep against the wishes of a majority of Americans (polled time and time again) to ban it.
Hahaha, Hollyweird, the home of Arnie and Mel. Again, logical fallacy artist Ian Shoots the Messenger. Sane people listen to what other’s say and decide on the merits of the argument. Ian; fact free, lotsa messenger shooting. No wonder you love Dick!
If Mel Gibson told me not to drink hot lava, I, not a GOP Autobot, would still consider his position before taking action. Ian! Clinton told you never to drink hot lava! Salud! Hint; is the opposing candidate’s campaign website RIGHT??? Truth has no political party.
Actually, a side-effect of Parkinson’s medication that allows patients to speak is uncontrolled shaking. Were Fox not on medication, he would be rigidly straight, unable to speak at all.
sorry bigby, I didn’t see the three cures that embryonic stem cell research has developed…
And since you are just tossing your idiotic ideas up on the wall to see what sticks…where exactly do the republicans say they want to ban ALL stem cell research?
Why is it that the leftists seem to think that no one is going to call them on the BS that they throw out there?
Dr. Pedro, I don’t HAVE to show you any derived cures. See, I understand the underlying principles as well as the Scientific Method. You seem to follow the Laura Bush school of science
(if no one has thought up anything to do with this thing yet, we better stop doing it).
Your childish ‘calling me out’ on this is simply to change the subject. There doesn’t have to be any ‘breakthrough’ therapy via Stem Cell Research for it to be ‘worth it’ any more than Galen should’ve quit after his first ‘dead end’.
Nice try though. I suppose you are out in the blogosphere attacking ALL research that doesn’t immediately produce results? Or just the ones your party uses as a political/theological bludgeon?
The reference to my ‘prayer’ about wingnuts coming down with diseases was allogoric, Doc Hollyweird…The Flying Spaghetti Monster doesn’t answer prayers like that!
I just said that. Ian ignored me. Funny that.
And why, Pedro, I had no idea you thought me such a threat that you have to keep beating this ridiculous strawman over and over.
Dr Pedro, you have GOT TO BE KIDDING.
Bush, 6 YEARS in office, vetoes ONE BILL. Stem Cell Research! Every vote
on this is a farce. The GOP, to maintain their stranglehold on all branches of government has to pander to suburban moderates who are split on this research. The GOP must placate their wingut base, so they play both sides of the issue. That you refuse to see that is YOUR problem, not mine.
Votes come up. GOP reps in moderate districts get to vote ‘for’ it. Oops! We changed the rules, it has to pass with 2/3rds. Better luck next time. Next time; oops! Bush signs his only veto, better luck NEXT TIME. Aw, so close, but Frist is too busy recognizing National Pork Product day to give it a floor vote. Try next session.
Over and over again the GOP pulls their pathetic Michael Steeles: “It’s a Holocaust that *I’D* vote for, Maryland! (offer not valid in Texas and Alabama!).”.
Dr. Pedro has proven his lack of credibility in this debate, unless of course he can provide the names of three celebrities he’s prayed to somehow have sex with and succeeded.
Oh well, guess there’s no God.
Why do these gifted bloggers keep feeding the troll? I don’t get it.
I get it bigby, embryonic stem-cell research is going to find an ALLEGORIC cure for otherwise incurable disease! Don’t tell Nimrod though, he thinks you can just ACT your way out of it!
August, like your cartoons, your rhetoric is at best disjointed, and at worst completely non-sensical.
And rick, I keep feeding the trolls because they keep throwing out ridiculous ideas that are backed up by nothing but their overactive imaginations….
Hey, don’t disrespect Augie’s work. At least he can draw like himself, instead of doing a really bad Berke Breathed impression like Bruce Tinsley. Also, Rich wasn’t referring to you. In that part of the sentence.
So how long were you planning on beating that strawman anyway? I ask only for information.
sorry nimrod, which “strawman”?
It gets confusing, as every leftist in america (and now apparently europe as well) describes every argument they know they are going to lose as a “strawman”
Rick, I feed the trolls because if my arguments are sound, they can be used by others when THEY debate people like Dr. Pedro. We’re winning this issue because we have facts on our side. I get MY arguments from what I read in various sources, including other blog’s comments.
He’s not muddying the waters here; he’s (unfortunately for him) getting our valid arguments out for others to read, absorb and use themselves with their equally obtuse (as Dr. Pedro) wingnut friends.
Dr. Pedro has joined Ian in the Logical Fallacies R Us group. He’s actually got a Twofer; Excluded Middle AND Shoot the Messenger. He ridicules but does not address any issues. Notice how pathetic his ridicule is. I never said ‘incurable disease’ (stem cell research may cure Dr. Pedro’s ED, male pattern baldness and help him metabolize fat better for example). This is a main argument of wingnuts (who don’t have the balls to just come out and say “Gawd told me stem cell research is Satanic and I want to push my blockheadedness on everyone!!!”);
“If Stem Cell research doesn’t cure, like full blown Stage 5 bone cancer in like the next 3 days, I say we shut it down forever!!!”
Nearly every research physician acknowledges that Stem Cell research shows promise for future therapies. That it is an advanced techonology means some therapies may not reach fruition for decades. That is no reason to stop. They ONLY want to shut it down for their fundies (that can be proven true simply using their own damn Snowflake Baby crap. How many are there? 40? How many frozen embryos await destruction? 400000? How many times has Dr. Pedro called for banning In Vitro? 0? How many votes would that lose among 30-40 yr old moderate women? Lots? Do The Math).
Someday, Big Pharma (not Limbaugh) will throw the fundie wingnuts under the bus in the name of science (and profit!). Won’t they be angry at the GOP they think they own?
My new prayer to the Flying Spaghetti Monster will be that we’ll ALL throw the GOP under the bus in November, we WILL fund Stem Cell research, it WILL cure Michael J. Fox, he WILL make Doc Hollywood II, in it he WILL use Stem Cell research to cure a fictitious Dr. Pedro’s ED, and…I won’t go see that film because despite my agreeing with Fox on this issue I never really liked any of his movies except the first BttF.
Done feeding the troll..time to feed myself!
Limbaugh is just human garbage. And anyone who defends him belongs in the same heap.
The fact that this guy, who got himself hooked on painkillers, is accusing a PD patient…man…there’s a special place in you know where for Limbaugh.
I just don’t like Republicans.
JK
great screed bigby…but as usual, the facts get in the way.
I happen to SUPPORT all forms of stem cell research.
I am a complete and utter AGNOSTIC who has no particular belief in a higher being (though I admit that my daughter and I really enjoy the FSM game on the website, though I tell her it is a ROOT beer volcano in heaven).
I DON’T support the ridiculous hyperbole of the idiotic left claiming the impending cure for anything from embryonic stem cell research. It is simply another fear-based tool the leftists use to bludgeon the population to dry to drum up votes…
“It is simply another fear-based tool the leftists use to bludgeon the population to dry to drum up votes…”
Ah, yes, suggesting that medical research might one day produce new treatments for the terminally ill is playing on people’s fears. And telling people again and again that if they don’t vote for republicans that they will be killed by terrorists is what, the politics of hope?
Yet again further evidence that the first prerequisite for supporting conservative policies is giving youself a lobotomy.
