It’s been admitted now that the Post story from this morning is Michael Steele, attempting to hide his conservative Republican credentials in order to be seen as different from his party, the Republicans.
“He realizes that he can’t win being a conservative Republican in Maryland in 2006,” said Maryland Democratic Party spokesman Arthur Harris. “He’s out of touch with the majority of Marylanders.”
In a statement, Democratic Party Chairman Terry Lierman pointed out that Steele, despite distancing himself from Bush, has held fundraisers with numerious Republican luminaries, including the President himself, Vice President Cheney, Bush adviser Karl Rove and Republican Party Chairman Ken Mehlman.
Nationally, Democrats eagerly pointed to Steele as an example of Republicans running away from Bush in the mid-term elections.
A Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee news release dubbed Steele “a premier member of Republicans Anonymous” and highlighted the fact that Steele’s campaign Web site does not mention he is a Republican.

As my Mom used to say…”Show me your friends and I can tell you who you are”.
Look at Steele’s website. Notice anything missing, like the word, “Republican”?
It’s hilarious. Steele is touted by the GOP for being that rarest of things, a conservative black republican. But Steele himself realizes, at least on some level, that he can’t win if people think of him as a republican. That alone speaks volumes about the modern GOP…
Jamey…
It’s standard practice, in my observation at least, for office holders and candidates to NOT mention party affiliation on their websites. Other examples are easy to find…for example the website of prominant Maryland Democrat Martin O’Malley. I’m a little surprised you didn’t turn that up in your research.
He just screwed up his best shot at wingnut welfare.
He may be politically stupider than Kathleen Townsend.
