Getting Things Done

Interesting story here about the effectiveness versus charm style of leadership - currently embodied in the guise of folks like NY Mayor Bloomberg, Newark Mayor-Elect Cory Booker, and I would add DC Mayor Anthony Williams who’s leaving on top. I do wonder that if that mindset might trickle up, where people saw what the charisma of a Bush produces (Katrina) and if his succesor may turn out to be in the mold of someone who promises to get the job done and without the drama. Maybe that’s an opening for someone like Mark Warner (or Al Gore).

    Bush produced a hurricane? Amazing.

Oh and it says a lot about voters in New Orleans that they returned Ray Nagin to office despite the fact that he (along with Governor Blanco), and not Bush as you forever whine, was largley responsible for the mess the city turned into because of Katrina.

Yeah, those niggers are idiots, right Jay? Or maybe the people of New Orleans know - like most Americans - that the buck in Katrina stopped with the President and the Mayor and Governor, though not without blame, don’t have the resources in their hands like the President and therefore overwhelmingly re-elected Mayor Nagin. It’s pretty insane that we’re providing quicker relief for the earthquake in Jakarta than for a hurricane in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Well, it didn’t. And unfortunately, too many people, including yourself have bought into the lie.

But what should I expect from somebody whose criticism of Nagin and Blanco was limited to saying they “weren’t perfect”?

You’re telling me that Bush, sitting on his ranch in Crawford, should be able to override a black mayor (with an 80% black populace) and say “Don’t listen to your local officials. And oh, by the way, we’re sending in the military.”

Let’s be honest, your reaction would be “Jackboots! Facist! The Bush Reich!”

That’s not fair! Bush did not stay on his ranch-he immediately flew out-to Arizona for Senator McCain’s birthday! He got himself another beautiful guitar, as well-very charismatic picture!

Yeah! It’s obviously Ray Nagin’s fault that the National Guard was in Iraq and that FEMA was just twiddling their thumbs the entire time. I mean, why the hell didn’t he just use the billions and BILLIONS of dollars they had just lying around to buy an anti-hurrican cannon? (A hurricane, by the way, that was started by Murtha).

Well, maybe they could have told the populace GET THE HELL OUT earlier than 18 hours before landfall.

    Just a thought.

Remember the mass exodus from Houston 96 hours before Rita? That’s what competent state/local leadership looks like.
