For the record, that’s three consecutive years of record profits. Here are the last four (notice the jump from 2002 to 2003):
2002 - $11.5 billion
2003 - $21.5 billion
2004 - $25.3 billion
2005 - $36.1 billion
And weren’t they the ones defending their honor on capital hill? The whole “we’re in dire straits” speech? Lord… the new era of robber barons is upon us, I fear.
Frank_D? drpedro? Guys? Nothing to say?
OMG WTF — Is this because they have managed to improve their processes? How much are they saving in taxes every year?
I certainly hope that they are investing those profits back into finding alternatives to oil.
Which is worse?
Ford and GM announcing billion-dollar losses and laying off close to 70,000 combined, or Exxon announcing a record profit?
If Iran forces all-out warfare in the Middle East and oil surges to $90 or more a barrel, then the oil companies will be in good financial shape to weather the devastating fallout. That’s good news for investors and for retirees who depend on income from stock dividends as well as those receiving pensions and health care benefits.
Won’t somebody think of the oil companies!

Mike;
This keeps coming up. Doesn’t it?
Let me ask you again;
So, Mike, I assume you are now supporting universal healthcare
provided by the government for the millions of UNINSURED individuals
and not just for corporations?
Oh, dear me, not the “widows and orphans” argument.
When we’re talking about Exxon taking money out of the middle class’ pockets (for the benefit of wealthy shareholders), conservatives pull out the widows-and-orphans hanky. But when it’s the Social Security Administration (actually providing money for, um, widows and orphans), why that’s creeping socialism leading us down the path to economic disaster.
Why do you s’pose that is?
I will admit that I am new to the blog-o-sphere, but are there any good articles/rants out there that are making this connection? If you could point them my way, I’d appreciate it.
I just heard this headline and, as a military spouse, just went ballistic.
Our military families sacrifice so much — for this?
I’d like to see ExxonMobil and the rest of the BigOil interests use their record profits and pay for these war expenditures. Either that, or raise your own damn Army.
