You know, I’m supposed to be appalled that the Kansas School Board has chosen to reject science in favor of fantasy (aka “Intelligent Design”), but really - I don’t care. I feel bad for the kids in Kansas, but it’s all their parent’s fault. It’s their parent’s fault when the kids get to college and realize that no, intelligent design is not science, and yes, your high school curriculum had more in common with My Little Pony than actual science.
I feel bad for the children of Kansas, but their parents have made a choice for them. A bad choice, but their choice.
The kids in KS are indeed the most immediate losers but all American citizens lose as well.
The future leaders of America are going to be entering a very, very competitive global economy–a global economy where many countries are rapidly catching up (or surpassing ) us. Then KS decides to hamstring these kids…
On a positive note, Dover, PA replaced its pro-ID school board with the pro-science candidates.
I don’t think it is that simple. When those kids go to college, a sizable number of them will fall back on the “evil liberal academic conspiracy” chestnut when their views slam up against the brick wall of fact and reason.
We’re already seeing conservative students sue professors when their poorly researched dreck gets an F. They’ve never been confronted with a different opinon and cannot handle it when they are.
We’re only going to continue to breed fundamentalists generation after generation if we don’t put our foot down. And soon. Facts is facts. They have to deal with it.
What’s the Matter With Kansas?
You’d think that kids would learn a lot about these subjects in college. But you’d be wrong. You have to go to class and read the book to learn anything, and a lot of college kids just don’t. And even if they do they just purge the info it after the final.
Here’s the fun part of ID advocacy: Christianity isn’t the only religion with a creation myth. Pagans, for example, also have stories about how the universe was made.
Who’s ready to start teaching paganism in the KS public schools? The people have spoken!
