Interesting story about the ‘08 Republicans running away from President Bush.
My current thinking goes that if the GOP really reacts harshly to the Miers pick (missing their big “F-U” to the left) and the promise unfilled of the Bush administration, they could pick one of the crazies - Roy Moore, Tom Tancredo, etc. Which would mean they would lose big. The pragmatic choice for the GOP would be John McCain, who’s also the candidate who would siphon off the most independent and Democratic voters, but they increasingly seem less likely to pick him - at least among the base, mainstream Republicans know better.
On the Democratic side, I do also think that someone outside of the DC Dems may have a leg up - including the usual look at governors, as well as Al Gore and John Edwards who are no longer “inside the beltway”.
This actually ties into something I wrote earlier today.
If the GOP starts running on an “I’m not Bush” platform, then the Democrats lose that angle and need to have a stronger message.
Well, the Democrats would (deservedly) lose anyway running on a “not Bush” platform. They need to run on a “I’m a Democrat” platform.
That would be a first.
Liz has a good point. However, the “I’m not Bush” ploy will only draw attention to 8 years of House & Senate goose stepping to the Texas tune. The legacy is still poor results on almost every front. They can’t say “I’m not Bush” without having to also say “Uh, well, uh, I sort of voted for everything he wanted”.
That’s the problem with the boss having it all his own way. The boss better not stumble. He’ll be gone and you have to explain why the Party should choose you. You wouldn’t/didn’t/couldn’t influence policy when it counted most, what would make anyone think you could lead.
I don’t see any statesmen in the GOP in or outside the beltway. Romney in Mass is a good speaker but has a problem with his Abortion stance. Ex Mayor G from NYC has name recognition. Name one thing outside 911 response that he’s done.
No one sticks out on the other side of the aisle, either. Maybe I should watch more Fox news to see who’s being attacked.

Kind of funny then that virtually every city in the country experienced deep decreases in crime after the crime bill, then, isn’t it? It wasn’t just NY City.
What the crime bill couldn’t do, the hot economy did do, and Guiliani took all of the credit.
How about this … go back in time a little bit, and take a look at what Times Square was like prior to Giuliani, take a look at it during his administration, and after he left office.
