I can’t vote in the Virginia election, but being in the DC metro area media market, I’m a bystander to the 2005 Virginia gubernatorial race and both campaigns are pouring tons of money into campaign ads. Tim Kaine’s ads have been pretty consistent, but now as his numbers slip Republican Jerry Kilgore has gone back to the old well: liberal, liberal, liberal. That’s what the cons do when they can’t get it done on the merits. In the Rasmussen poll Kaine has gone from a six point deficit to dead even with Kilgore, while Kilgore has just treaded water.
And now Mark Warner, the most popular pol in Virginia (and 20% more popular than President Bush in VA)- and possible ‘08 presidential candidate - has jumped into the ad race for his Lt. Governor.
I guess the decision of Gov. Hoeven not to challenge Kent Conrad for the Senate seat for North Dakota has the republicans a llittle upset at “Libbie’ Dole. They think she mishandled the whole thing. That may be but I think KR making an appearance may have pissed the players off. No doubt his understated style left them cold. Anyway they showed him the road to the Gulf Coast where he shoulda’ been anyway.
In the VA race, the more the national economy heads south–the more it hurts Kilgore. VA voters realize Kilgore’s plans to cut taxes even further in a weakening economy is going to make VA look like MS.
VA GOPers like their tax cuts–but they see the mess Gilmore left the state in–during a great economy. They look at Kilgore’s plan to slash taxes in the midst of a very shaky economy and they’re getting cold feet.
Oliver, isn’t it interesting that if you call your opponent a liberal, he doesn’t deny it, he just loses percentage points?
If I were being called something that wasn’t true and losing points for it, I’d be crying “foul” to the rooftops. Why isn’t he?

The point JWG simply doesn’t undestand is that economic growth–by itself–is misleading. During the Great Depression, for instance, the economy grew at a rate of about 3% annually. By JWG’s logic, this means things were going “very well.”
Kaine hasn’t lost points, he’s gained. And he isn’t remotely liberal. For you guys Democrat = liberal, but our tent is much bigger than that. Hell, I’m pretty damn conservative on a lot of issues but I don’t have the kind of hate needed to be a Republican.
