The Noise Machine, In Action

In case you were wondering if all the Republicans spontaneously came to the exact same conclusions about hwo to respond to the indictment of Tom DeLay

Just minutes after the announcement came, DeLay s closest and strongest supporters began mounting a defense. By 2 p.m., a two-page memo condemning Ronnie Earle and the indictment was hitting Republican e-mail in boxes all over town.

Republicans would not disclose the author of the memo, which is not the first of its kind. Earlier this year, Barbara Comstock, a lawyer and former research director at the Republican National Committee, penned a memo in response to questions that DeLay was facing involving foreign travel and reports that his wife and daughter had received $500,000 since 2001 for work they did for his campaign and political action committee.

And you might be wondering who exactly Barbara Comstock is. Wonder no more.

So, she is a Republican. Brilliant. How about addressing the substance of what she wrote ?

Let us take a look at this. In one instance, Oliver criticizes people for criticizing the messenger, so long as the messenger is saying something he agree with. However, when it involves politics that he does not agree with, the messenger is open for criticism.

    Oliver,

Still waiting for somebody to address the substance of what she wrote. Or in your mind, is it just sufficient to point out that she is a Republican?

I had to deal with Comstock in the early 90’s as a lawyer representing witnesses in hearings relating to Travelgate. My clients were not Clinton folks but neutral fact witnesses with no political axe to grind — just wanted to testify and go home. Had never heard of her before and will never forget her. She had a blatant “let’s get the Clintons” agenda and viewed any testimony that did not fit her agenda as unacceptable and likely perjurous and any witnesses providing such unhelpful testimony as co-conspirators. I believe she and Ann Coulter were separated at birth.
