A post over at the Seminal is taking “liberal elitism” to task for not taking the Tea Party people seriously, and that that will lead to the election of Sarah Palin and other such ilk.

To quote our vice president, malarkey.

While I have long argued that there is too much elitism on the left for my tastes, there’s a wide gulf between holding your nose in the air for no good reason and dumbing yourself down in order to appeal to the lowest common idiotic denominator. Suck is the case with the Tea Party group and their leaders like Palin.

Far from the liberals in the ’70s who were clearly not responsive enough to the middle class, leading to the rise of Nixon and resentment politics, today’s left has gone to great lengths to be a big tent. So much so that some of our biggest fault lines are internal and don’t involve the Republicans at all. But far from the pre-Clinton great society types, todays liberals understand that without blue collar people on our side we don’t advance as a movement.

The problem is that the vast majority of the issues brought up by the tea party types and Palin are idiotic. These aren’t people with the traditional lower-middle class concerns of Americans (which is my family background) but instead these are people who largely believe the conspiracy du jour, whether that involves secret armies, the president’s “true” nationality, or Nancy Pelosi’s “death panels” that are set up to pull the plug on Grandma.

While the concerns of many white, middle-class people are worthy causes and should be addressed by liberals (and are), it is not elitism to treat this roving band of conspiracy nuts for the cretins they are or associate with. This would be akin to President Johnson in 1964 undertaking a federal committee to study the mind control powers of fluoridated water. That would be asinine.

Liberals have in the past allowed the ivory tower set to exert too much control over the Democratic party. That resulted in a narrow focus and deserved electoral losses. But the idea that the tea party movement represents any sort of rational discourse deserving of recognition and outreach is absurd. These are, by and large, the same band of stupid people we have always had in this country, whether they were in favor of submission to the British empire, secession from the union, alliance with Hitler, or decrying the president a “half breed Muslim terrorist”, we owe them no recognition or inclusion in the important discussion about the direction of American society.

The Club For Growth endorses Marco Rubio in Florida, because the current GOP is far more interested in a right wing extremist like Rubio rather than a popular governor like Crist having a shot at federal office.

Its not a coincidence that the same mindset that drove the country into a ditch over the last 8 years has come up with this ass-backwards political strategy. Look, if this purging for pure conservatives was going on in solid GOP states like Alabama, Georgia, etc. it might make sense – but while there are pockets of that sort of knuckle dragging in Florida, a statewide nominee has to be a little more rooted in reality.

A Texas congressman sent a letter Wednesday to Metro General Manager John B. Catoe Jr. demanding an explanation for why the transit agency didn’t do more to prepare for the massive influx of conservative activists at Saturday’s march on the Mall.

Rep. Kevin Brady (R) said an 80-year-old woman and her 60-year-old daughter were forced to walk and pay for a cab because the subway system was so crowded. He said he heard many complaints from people who traveled long distances to attend the event, which served to challenge some of President Obama’s signature policies.

Amazing. Simply amazing.

1. Conservatives shouldn’t be using public transportation anyway.

2. I took a look at the numbers over here on Media Matters. Conclusion? Metro ridership was up, but not by a whole lot.

According to the Washington Metro Area Transportation Authority (WMATA), 437,624 people rode on the Metro Rail system on Saturday, September 12th. How does that day compare to similar Saturdays?

September 5th, 2009: 300,963 riders

August 29th, 2009: 303,997 riders

August 22th, 2009: 293,200 riders

Ridership on 9/12 wasn’t even close to Fourth of July, let alone the inauguration.

3. I was on the train itself. It was a little crowded, but no more so than after a Nationals game or a Capitals playoff game.

These people are making their complaints up. They are laughable whining spoiled little babies who decided to come to your nation’s capital to put on a show and while they did so, like every other protest they didn’t change dick.

While I was going down to the Teabagger’s protest on Saturday I noted on Twitter that the ones I was on the subway with were noticeably prickly around some black folks also riding the train.

Here’s a post from conservative Dan Riehl to confirm that the sentiment wasn’t isolated.

Riding out of DC on the Metro, 9/12, there were some folks from South Dakota and also another Mid-West state I can’t recall in the same Metro car. We were talking, nothing special, really – politics, of course.

In the back were maybe ten or so black kids taking up that section of the car. There was no confrontation, just one or two of them talking loudly enough to make sure they’d be heard.

Without resorting to the poor diction it was along the lines of, these are the people who think Obama is the anti-Christ. That McCain he wasn’t chit. Obama’s going to be president as long as he wants, so these people better get used to it, etc. It went on but not really to a level that was so loud, or so confrontational that it needed to be addressed.

We just ignored them without much trouble at all.

I can’t imagine why black folks might be a little wary of these people.

Plus we know two or more black people are a gang, and regardless of their age, race, or class all of us are thugs.

Seriously, this guy? Right out of the Crips, or Bloods. I never know which is which. I come hardcore, growing up on the mean streets of suburban Silver Spring, MD and the thug life of suburban Lauderdale Lakes, FL.

Of course, pretending to not be a communist would be the perfect cover for a communist, right?

Unity and resistance are what the fist represented in 1917, when it was first employed by the Industrial Workers of the World, a union organization founded by socialists. And in the 1940s, when it stood for various nations’ communist party organizations.

Fist Progressive Labor Party That’s also what it meant when it was revived in the 1960s, appearing as a symbol for the SDS, as well as anti-war and feminist movements. It was the basis for the black-power salute given by John Carlos and Tommie Smith at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. And today, it’s the symbol for the Progressive Labor Party (pictured), a political outfit whose website says it ‘fights to smash capitalism.’

We need to start asking: Is Glenn Beck a communist double agent? He hasn’t denied it, so it might be true.

Yes, it varied from the center-right to the far right. The teabag movement is obsessed with pretending that it has no party nor ideology when that simply isn’t true. It is a very conservatve, Republican-voting constituency. They have a habit of propping up “former Democrats” or “independents” but frankly its almost totally composed of people who voted for McCain and Bush.
