(HOUSTON) — Amid increasing evidence of his unstable mental condition, President Kennedy today announced in a speech at Rice University that he was beginning a program to send America to the “moon”. The audience in attendence seemed mostly puzzled by the President’s moon talk.

“A man on the moon? That’s a ridiculous idea.”, said little Charlie Krauthammer, 12, president of his neighborhood’s “Lil’ Neocon Society”. It does seem like an odd endeavour for Kennedy, especially when you consider that there are still questions remaining from the 1960 election in which many observers believe Kennedy stole the election from Nixon.

The president caused jaws to drop even further when he insisted that a moon landing would occur before the end of the decade – supposedly some time in 1969 at the latest. “President Kennedy’s lack of scientific knowledge is dangerous,” said Harry Trunbridge of the Conservative Coalition of Scientists. He continued: “We all know that dangerous cosmic rays prevent man from going any further than low earth orbit. Plus, there are space monsters on the moon.”

The president’s spokesman disagreed with these bold, proud Americans, possibly due to Communist influence over the administration.

This is an amazingly important transition period at NASA, and I hope the new director is not just a caretaker type, but instead has a vision for where we want to go (MARS!!!!).

Bolden’s toughest assignment is bridging the divide within NASA and among its powerful contractors between its glamorous traditional mission of manned space exploration and an expanding research focus made more urgent by climate change and other environmental issues.

“These are two separate challenges,” Franco Enouldi, the director of earth sciences at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said in an interview. “People will differ on which one is more important. Are the funds there to accomplish (both) missions? That is a serious question whose answer is not clear.”

Obama has formed a commission to study the future of NASA, and he summoned Bolden to the White House on Tuesday to gain assurances that its prospective leader would implement its recommendations.

It helps that he’s a spaceman. And yes I sort of prefer “spaceman” over “astronaut” because it implies he has a ray gun. You know, to fight space aliens and junk.

A new study finds some serious valleys carved by rivers within the last billion years — much sooner than most similar findings. That’s good news for biologists, as water is a key to life as we know it, and the more recently there was liquid water on Mars, the greater the chances for life to have arisen and endured.

Jay Dickson of Brown University and his colleagues found valleys more than 800 feet wide (250 meters) and tens of miles (kilometers) long in new images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The valleys look as though they were carved by running water.

“We believe that these new valleys were formed within the last billion years, which is quite recent when you view it in the geologic history of water on Mars,” Dickson told SPACE.com.

President Obama, please send us to MARS. John Jones is waiting!

In the search for Earth-like planets, astronomers zeroed in Tuesday on two places that look awfully familiar to home. One is close to the right size. The other is in the right place.

European researchers said they not only found the smallest exoplanet ever, called Gliese 581 e, but realized that a neighboring planet discovered earlier, Gliese 581 d, was in the prime habitable zone for potential life.

“The Holy Grail of current exoplanet research is the detection of a rocky, Earth-like planet in the ‘habitable zone,’” said Michel Mayor, an astrophysicist at Geneva University in Switzerland.

An American expert called the discovery of the tiny planet “extraordinary.”

U.S. President Barack Obama has proposed a funding boost for NASA that provides more support for Earth sciences missions and aviation, while keeping the agency’s three space shuttles on target for a 2010 retirement.

NASA would receive $18.7 billion for the 2010 fiscal year under the budget proposal released by the White House on Thursday. That would be an increase from the $17.2 billion NASA received in 2008 and represents an overall boost of more than $2.4 billion for the space agency when coupled with the additional $1 billion it received in the recent economic stimulus bill.

The budget calls on NASA to complete International Space Station construction, as well as continue its Earth science missions and aviation research. Yet it also remains fixed to former President George W. Bush’s plan to retire the space shuttle fleet by 2010 and replace them with the new Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle, which would fly astronauts to the space station and return them to the moon by 2020.

Now, I ain’t wild about going to the moon, but you take what you can get.

Apparently there are some odd rock formations on Mars, and NASA is explaining them.

Here’s what they think happens: Wind removes loose sand in front of the rocks, creating pits there and depositing that sand behind the rocks, creating mounds. The rocks then roll forward into the pits, moving into the wind. As long as the wind continues to blow, the process is repeated and the rocks move forward.

The rocks protect the tiny sand mounds from wind erosion. Those piles of sand, in turn, keep the rocks from being pushed downwind and from bunching up with one another.

‘You get this happening five, 10, 20 times then you start to really move these things around,’ Pelletier said. ‘They can move many times their diameter.’

Does anyone buy this? Wind? This is just the latest coverup for NASA about Mars. Clearly, the Martian overlords are preparing a base for their invasion force.
