MARTIN: But your candidates got to talk to them. One of the criticisms I’ve always had is Republicans — white Republicans — have been scared of black folks.

STEELE: You’re absolutely right. I mean I’ve been in the room and they’ve been scared of me. I’m like, ‘I’m on your side’ and so I can imagine going out there and talking to someone like you, you know, [you're like,] ‘I’ll listen.’ And they’re like ‘Well.’ Let me tell you.

President Obama is overwhelmingly popular in every region of the country except for the south. I am surely this is all entirely due to his economic policies and his radical social agenda and not any other thing at all, certainly not the color of his skin no way sir.

The hypocrisy, critics say, lies in CNN’s decision to woo Hispanic viewers with a prime-time documentary while still giving Mr. Dobbs a nightly forum. Roberto Lovato, a founding member of Presente.org, a Latino advocacy group, said in a statement, “We won’t allow the network to court us as viewers while, at the same time, they allow Dobbs to spread lies and misinformation about us each night.”

Separately, Mr. Dobbs is also the target of a “Drop Dobbs” campaign by the progressive groups NDN, Media Matters for America, and others. That effort started after Mr. Dobbs repeatedly raised questions about President Obama’s birth certificate.

There is no indication that the campaigns are affecting CNN’s revenue, but they are highlighting Mr. Dobbs’s status as an outlier at the channel, which has sought to position itself as a middle ground of sorts in the fractious cable news arena. Mr. Dobbs is known to be exploring an exit from CNN, and he is viewed as a potential hire for the Fox Business Network, an upstart channel owned by the News Corporation.

As I’ve said before, Lou Dobbs already has a Fox News show… it just happens to be on CNN.

The smirking extremist was exposed as a political lightweight by members of the panel and an angry audience who booed and jeered him as he took his seat.

One black audience member told him his views were “disgusting”. Another said he was an “absolute disgrace”.

Earlier, Griffin had snuck into the BBC studios through a back entrance to avoid protesters.

One viewer said last night: “He was exposed in front of the country for what he is – a pathetic little bigot.”

Racism only succeeds when you give it power, when you try to ban it instead of just holding it up to the ridicule it deserves. Racism lost another round here, and across the globe we win a little bit.

My initial impulse is that I would err in favor of having the loons on tv to have their say, knowing that the argument of a racist always collapses under scrutiny. But it’s not a slam dunk. What do you think?

Shaun Conley, a Johnstown plumber, took on the task of organizing that peaceful protest, which will be at Bittersweet Park, 16th Street and 35th Avenue, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., with the help of Pelzer and others.

“I wouldn’t say I organized anything. I’m just a cog in the wheel that got this started,” said Conley, 41. It got started when news of the stimulus packages came out, and when those packages reached $1 trillion, Conley couldn’t stand it any longer.

“We don’t have $1 trillion,” Conley said, but he really became agitated when he learned the federal government intended to go ahead and print the money.

“That’s just going to lead to double-digit inflation,” he said. When he learned of the American Family Association’s movement, he contacted the group to get some information and ended up becoming an organizer. He originally planned for perhaps 250 to 500, but he said the event has drawn interest from all over and could reach 1,000 or more.

“People are absolutely beside themselves with the spending and taxation,” said Conley, 41, who built a house and moved here from Loveland more than six years ago. “You can’t spend your way to prosperity, and you can’t borrow your way out of debt. That’s what we’re trying to fight as a group.”

U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins offered encouragement to conservatives at a town hall forum that the Republican Party would embrace a “great white hope” capable of thwarting the political agenda endorsed by Democrats who control Congress and President Barack Obama.

Jenkins, a Topeka Republican in her first term in Congress, shared thoughts about the GOP’s political future during an Aug. 19 forum at Fisher Community Center in the northeast Kansas community of Hiawatha.

In response to inquiries by The Topeka Capital-Journal, a Jenkins spokeswoman said Wednesday the congresswoman wanted to apologize for her word choice and to emphasize she had no intention of expressing herself in an offensive manner.

Translation? “Sorry I got caught, next time I’m a racist I’ll make sure there aren’t any reporters around.”

As I’ve noted, conservatives often can’t help themselves from indulging in racism, and Republicans still – inexplicably – see that as a winning political strategy of some sort.

This suggests to me that, as far as African-Americans are concerned, ‘race politics’ will continue unabated, as if Obama had never been elected president.

This suggests to me that right-wingers insist on pretending as if racism is solved. As if the election of President Obama is just the latest marker they can point to (previous faves were Clarence Thomas and Colin Powell) in order to minimize and delegitimize every other incident of racism.

We’re a long ways from Selma, but that doesn’t mean racists and racism doesn’t still influence our lives in America. And when it does flare up we have to snuff it out immediately and without equivocation. In the process of doing that, it would help a lot to have the aid of conservatives and the conservative movement rather than the casual acceptance of bigotry that is the default position of so much of the right. Try it. It isn’t hard.

A Boston police officer was placed on administrative leave after he allegedly used a racial slur when referring to Henry Louis Gates Jr.

In a mass e-mail, Officer Justin Barrett, 36, called Gates a ‘jungle monkey,’ according to a law enforcement source.

Gates, a black Harvard scholar, was arrested at his home earlier this month on a disorderly conduct charge after he tried to budge open the door of his Cambridge home.

I can’t possibly imagine why a black guy like Gates could possibly think that prejudice had any role in a police officer arresting him in his home. Unthinkable.

Just in case you were wondering if these people still weren’t on the fringes of American society (but in the base of conservatism).

I also know that there have been incidents of false reports of racism by police officers — the Tawana Brawley case, for one.

And you know what? Every time a case comes up involving racism and police, we hear about Tawana freaking Brawley from 22 years ago. Yes, she lied. Yes, Al Sharpton is a fool. But every single time, it’s always “remember Tawana Brawley”. That one screwjob of a case is simply not the get out of jail free card for racism that conservatives so often think it is.

Also, the stories about the officer in this case being involved in racial profiling supervision or that he performed resuscitation on a black NFL NBA player don’t have anything to do with what happened the night he went to Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s house. It’s the “some of my best friends are black” argument. No relevance.

Because sometimes you have to laugh about it. (via)

Conservative bloggers and commenters like to insist that I cry racism all the time, and I’m pretty sure that part of that is due to my trademark bluntness (if someone’s being racist, I say so). So be it. They’re wrong on everything else, why stop now?
