I will concede that he performed somewhat better in the pre-season. But that said, I am more than a little disappointed that the Redskins starting quarterback is the worst QB to ever win play in a Super Bowl, Rex Grossman.

I of course hope he does well, but I doubt John Beck will be holding the clipboard for very long.

By all indications, the ax has already fallen on beleaguered Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips. ESPN reports that Phillips’ leased SUV was not in the Cowboys’ Valley Ranch parking lot as of 9:00 a.m. CT, and Phillips has not been seen around the facility.

Normally, Jerry Jones meets with the Cowboys coaching staff on Monday mornings to watch game film.

Every time it seemed as though the Dallas Cowboys hit a new low point, Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers knocked them down another notch.

Rodgers threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns, Brandon Jackson scored twice and the Packers routed the free-falling Cowboys 45-7 on Sunday night.

Sweet Lord.

The New York Giants again looked like the team to beat in the NFC East, and helped to move the competitive portion of the Dallas Cowboys’ season a few significant steps closer to being over. The Giants beat the Cowboys, 41-35, here Monday night and knocked quarterback Tony Romo from the Dallas lineup with a fractured left clavicle.

Quarterback Eli Manning threw four touchdown passes as the Giants won their fourth straight game to improve to 5-2, putting them a game ahead of the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles atop the division. The Cowboys lost their third in a row to fall to 1-5, and a season that began with them hoping to play in the Super Bowl on their home field now seems irreparable.

When we discuss the fail of this season’s Cowboys, let’s not forget who started their drain circling.

Of course in the NFL its always “there but for the grace of God go I,” but this is Dallas and I have an obligation to revel in their misery.

NFL.com titled this little exchange ‘War of words: Cutler and DeAngelo Hall.’ This, though, wasn’t a fair war.

‘You know what, he just put it up there,’ Hall said of Jay Cutler. ‘He put it up there, we had a chance to make plays.’

‘I’ve played against him before,’ Cutler said, at his own press conference. ‘There’s no reason to shy away from him. I mean, that’s hard for me to say, throwing four picks at a guy, but I’d still, if we had to play them tomorrow, I’d go at him every time, if we could.’

I know that the NFL prides itself on being a TV-friendly sport, but this is ridiculous.

Wondering why Tennessee’s 30-3 Monday night rout of Jacksonville was extended enough for Titans running back Chris Johnson to rumble for a meaningless 35-yard touchdown following the two-minute warning?

Jeff Fisher, Johnson’s coach, tried to downplay the late touchdown in his postgame press conference. He was looking to run out the clock with a 23-3 lead, but he noted after the game that ESPN requested him and Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio to call timeouts to help the network.

‘Jack used his timeouts,’ Fisher told reporters. ‘My understanding is they needed network timeouts, and that’s why Jack used his timeouts. They came over and asked me to do it, but I said, ‘I was hoping to get a first down and kneel on it.”

Took them long enough.

The NFL will announce by Wednesday that, effective this weekend, even first-time offenders face suspension for ‘devastating hits’ and ‘head shots,’ according to Ray Anderson, the league’s executive vice president of football operations.

‘We can’t and won’t tolerate what we saw Sunday,’ Anderson said Monday. ‘We’ve got to get the message to players that these devastating hits and head shots will be met with a very necessary higher standard of accountability. We have to dispel the notion that you get one free pass in these egregious or flagrant shots.’

McNabb to Cooley is a connection I can work with.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that more than 8,300 tickets remain for the team’s preseason opener. If the tickets aren’t sold out by Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. PT, Saturday night’s home game against the Bears won’t be televised live in the Chargers’ home market.

Brett Favre has informed his Vikings teammates that he will not return for another season in Minnesota, the Star-Tribune reported Tuesday.

Sources also confirmed to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that Favre planned to retire.

Neither Favre nor the vikings have confirmed the news but a press release is expected Tuesday, the sources said.

Starting the season with Dallas? I don’t think my heart can take that.

The Philadelphia Eagles have reached agreement on a blockbuster intra-division trade that will send perennial Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins, according to multiple sources close to the situation.

The two sides still must finalize language, but McNabb is now headed to Washington. Sources said the deal involved the Redskins’ second-round pick in the 2010 draft and either a third- or fourth-round pick next year, depending on several factors.

A few weeks ago when the Eagles started talking about McNabb, I said I’d gladly take him for a second rounder. HAIL TO THIS.

Well, we know two games on the Redskins schedule just got upgraded to must-watch.
