That isn’t to say that some people have really strong feelings about immigration, but the sound and fury of the nativist faction seems time and again to be more noise than anything. They tried to make this a big time issue in both the 2006 and 2008 elections and both times the most vehemently anti-immigration candidates did not win, from the Republican primaries to the general election.

I reserve the right to be totally wrong on this, but I dunno…

So, one of the smarter things Rove and Bush tried to do is bring minorities into the Republican fold. They had to see the writing on the wall. The core constituency of the Republican party, white males, is not growing. The major reason their political influence remains disproportionately high is due to a lack of political involvement on the behalf of minorities – particularly hispanics. Now that that community is finally engaged, it coincides right with the Republican notion that it needed to retain its base by embracing hatred to hispanics under the guise of immigration reform. The most immigration friendly Republican candidate eventually became the nominee, but it looks like the damage has been done. Republicans may have lost hispanic Americans for a generation. They are on pace to lose women, and every other minority votes Democratic.

Sen. Obama is now using the words of Republican booster Rush Limbaugh in an ad targeted at hispanic voters. It’s hard for the GOP to distance themselves from Limbaugh – this is a show the president, vice president, and president’s brother go on consistently. He keeps the hardest of the hard core base mainlined on conservative bull and misinterpretation of the facts for 4 hours a day, 5 days a week. For many, he is the GOP.

In 2006, Limbaugh went after Michael J. Fox’s Parkinsons disease because Fox advocated for Claire McCaskill. The backlash probably helped McCaskill to win her senate seat.

Limbaugh has admitted that he carries water for the Republicans, and nothing would be better for his show’s content than a Democratic president.

Perhaps we need to send him some roses after election day?

One of the reasons the GOP speeches from the last couple nights and likely Thursday night will look so alien to the rest of normal America is that the GOP makes snow look diverse by comparison. The GOP is talking to themselves — and not much to anybody else.

Obama’s “strategy is, ‘If I can just deliver the votes that I know exist, whether it’s in the minority community or the youth,’ or whatever the coalition is that he’s got . . . ‘then I can win this election,’ ” Davis said. “We can run our campaign the way we want to run it and not be in direct conflict with a lot of voter groups he is trying to get.”

The look in the convention hall is similar to that of a typical McCain event. This summer, for instance, 67 people showed up for one of his town hall meetings in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. One of them was black.

The lack of diversity is out of sync with the demographic changes in the United States. The Census Bureau reported last month that racial and ethnic minorities will make up a majority of the country’s population by 2042 — almost a decade earlier than what the bureau predicted just four years ago. Two-thirds of Americans are non-Hispanic whites, 12.4 percent are black and 14.8 percent are Hispanic, according to 2006 census numbers.

What has helped Republicans is that working-class whites, a bloc they rely on, are more likely to vote than other groups. “But if there is a loss this time, and it is attributed to a smaller and smaller base of white voters, there might be a rethinking” of GOP strategy, said Robert E. Lang, co-director of Virginia Tech’s Metropolitan Institute, which studies demographics and other development patterns.

As a Democrat it is pretty heartening to hear the GOP simply writing off non-white voters. This is a country that is increasingly becoming less white, day by day. If your message is targeted to one monoculture, and your noise machine largely run by that monoculture, you have no way of knowing how out of touch you are. Most Republican pols and conservatives simply have no true gauge for when they’re speaking in an exclusionary manner. It’s natural. For the Democratic party to exist it must appeal to all races – period. It’s no coincidence that most minorities in federal office are Democrats and the few times the Republicans try to dress up their monoculture policies in the guise of a minority they suffer double digit defeats like Michael Steele (Steele lost the black vote 74% to 25%).

The Republicans, even more than in the past, have decided to get their monochromatic base motivated to the exclusion of everyone else. Heck, they put the wife of a separatist on the ticket! I don’t know if that’s going to be the key to their failure this go-around (their anti-Hispanic tirades sure didn’t help in 2006), but it isn’t going to help – and in the near future it is going to be a disaster. I’m okay with that, but then… I’m a Democrat.

Hispanic registered voters prefer Democratic Sen. Barack Obama over GOP opponent John McCain by 66 to 33 percent, according to a study just released by the Pew Research Center. The presidential candidates have battled for the Hispanic vote, which could play a key role in four expected battleground states.

Hispanic voters seem to have easily transferred their support from Sen. Hillary Clinton to Obama. The nonpartisan research organization found that more than three-fourths of Latinos who voted for Sen. Hillary Clinton in the primaries now support Obama. During the primaries, Hispanic voters favored Clinton by a ratio of nearly two-to-one.

Hispanic voters have a chance in November to fully repudiate the party and political movement that has made much sport out of dehumanizing them.

The NBC/WSJ poll shows the hispanic vote going 62-28 for Obama, which echoes the similar double digit drop from the Gallup poll. The Republican party’s embrace of xenophobia may turn out to have the same demographic effect that adopting the southern strategy had for the GOP. It may be a generation before Republicans can contest for the hispanic vote again (I’m curious what the Cuban American vote in Florida looks like), and even more worrisome for them – unlike the black vote that’s mostly stagnant at about 13-15%, the hispanic vote is increasing.

Of course, as the amount of Hispanics in America increases, the more intolerant conservative rhetoric becomes. It’s almost like they keep throwing the ball to our best cornerback no matter what the formation is.

In 2004, Hispanic voters went 55-<strike>44</strike> (I’ve been informed the correct number is 40%) for John Kerry. Apparently unsatisfied with this historically good performance among this growing segment of voters, the Republicans decided to become the party of attacking hispanics, of trumping up as much noise as possible about a hispanic invasion that would threaten the lives of white people. That strategy is going to pay dividends. For Democrats. Barack Obama currently leads John McCain 62-29 among Hispanic voters.

And in a related note from Planet Duh, Sen. Obama leads among black voters 90-4. That 4% will come around.

The little Michelle Malkin got busted.

A 13-year-old girl who claimed she was attacked by a group inside Athens Middle School was caught on a surveillance camera causing the injuries to herself.

The girl now faces disciplinary action from the school and will be charged with filing a false police report, AISD superintendent Fred Hayes said during a news conference today.

The parents of Melanie Bowers have since sent letters of apology to school and law enforcement investigators.

Hayes said officials in investigating the matter saw the tape that caught her scratching herself on the arms and neck. Last week she had claimed the injuries were inflicted by a group of about 20 students who also threatened to sexually assault and kill her.

The girl had participated in a history class project with a “protest” theme. She brought to school a protest sign reading “If you love your country stop illegal immigration.”

She claimed she was attacked because of the sign.
