Yesterday in Physics someone’s phone went off to the tune of the Justice League. After the professor paused his lecture to acknowledge the phone, the kid answered his phone and replied, “The University is in trouble?! We’re on our way!” The kid stood up, ripped off his t-shirt, revealed the Superman costume underneath, and exclaimed “Super Friends, Assemble!” Scattered across the class of about 150, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Green Lantern, and Flash all stood up and promptly left the class to save Auburn University.

Yes, they mixed up the rallying cry of the Avengers with the Justice League, WHATEVER.*

* I shouldn’t admit knowing that kind of thing, should I?

I’m not too hyped about tablet computers, I remember the hype about them from about a decade or so ago and the splat that followed. But if the much rumored Apple tablet had some sort of magical comic book features, that would be like a free marshmallow on top of a chocolate sundae.

The comic book industry is ailing and I bet paper costs are part of that. Existing infrastructure to create digital comics doesn’t really exist. Web comics aren’t portable enough, and the existing portable devices are either too small (iPod, iPhone) or not in color (Kindle) to make a go of it. It’s still a relatively small market but an Appleish device that could deliver super-awesome looking digital comics would be the bees knees.

Returning to his hometown to attend a cousin’s wedding Saturday, Josh Sundling, 29, reportedly demonstrated on numerous occasions a vast, far more intricate understanding of the fictional Marvel Comics Universe than of his own family’s genealogy.

Sundling, who cannot identify his ancestral homeland or the meaning of his surname, possesses extensive knowledge of the creation of superhero teams, the history of imaginary alien races, and the special powers of countless characters.

‘We’re from Sweden or Norway or somewhere around there,’ said Sundling, who when prompted can accurately detail the origins of each cartoon member of the X-Men, the Avengers, the Defenders, and the Squadron Supreme. ‘I don’t know for sure. I never really asked about it.’

I don’t usually like stealth video games (I generally prefer to barge in and get things done – that’s why my death to kill ratio on Call Of Duty is so horrible) but I LOVE Batman: Arkham Asylum, and I think this post makes a good case for why

And who has the most fun in a Batman game? There are few experiences as thrilling or rewarding as becoming the caped predator, quietly observing from the shadows and slowly turning unbeatable, well-armed odds into one whimpering, paranoid sod. You don’t want The Joker’s minions to see you, but in Batman’s unique approach to stealth, you want them to know you’re there. It’s no wonder Batman’s so keen on freaking people out — it’s fun!

When you hear the bad guys quaking in fear about Batman, and you think OMG I AM THE BATMAN WHICH THEY FEAR, it is such a fun feeling. Best game I’ve played in a long time. Almost makes up for all the crappy Superman games I’ve bought over the years.

The Walt Disney Company said Monday that it would buy the comic book giant Marvel Entertainment for about $4 billion.

Under the terms of the deal, Marvel shareholders will receive a $30 a share in cash plus about 0.745 Disney shares for each Marvel share they own. The boards of both companies have approved the deal, which was valued at $50 a share.

With the acquisition, Disney will acquire more than 5,000 Marvel characters, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and the X-Men.

Natalie Portman returns to the sci-fi fold to star as Jane Foster in the new Thor movie. Marvel Studios announced Tuesday that the Academy Award-nominated actress will play the earthling love interest to superheroic exile Thor (Chris Hemsworth). Producers describe the character as an “updated” take on the sweet Nurse Foster character featured in early issues of the comic book series.

Some interesting choices.

This week, the race narrowed to Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds and Justin Timberlake. The clock is ticking on the decision as the holding deal the studio had on the actors expired Monday, meaning the three are now free to accept other offers.

My preference would probably be for Ryan Reynolds, but Justin Timberlake might surprise. He’s one of the better celebrity hosts they’ve had for SNL in a few years, so he might have the chops to pull it off – but he’s a little skinny for the role.

If you haven’t you should read Green Lantern: Rebirth, for someone like myself who only cared about GL as a member of the Justice League and not much more, it made me a fan.
