“The U.S. Air Force may soon be adding some serious bling to its aircraft, in the form of windows made from 80-carat diamonds. In theory, the windows would protect jets from high-powered microwaves (HPMs) they would themselves produce. The Air Force is vague on the details, but HPM devices aboard a jet could be used to disrupt or destroy enemy electrical systems. The problem is, they could also disrupt systems on board the jet itself.” Link

“A Swedish research scientist has discovered that the current generation of pedigree dogs, normally social and curious creatures by nature, are disinterested, shy and less responsive to commands than their ancestors. The study found show-quality and ‘handbag’ pooches were the most likely to lack the instincts of previous generations, which were bred for their strength, hunting and working abilities, rather than their looks. ” [Link]

“A new study in the U.K. by Craig Roberts, a University of Liverpool professor who focuses on the role of scent in mate choice among humans and mice, indicates that there might be a whiff of truth in it. The research found that men who used Lynx deodorant, Axe’s British-brand cousin, were seen as more attractive by females than men who used a ‘placebo’ deodorant with no fragrance. ” [Link]

“Researchers from Loyola University Health System and other centers compared African American women in metropolitan Chicago with women in rural Nigeria. On average, the Chicago women weighed 184 pounds and the Nigerian women weighed 127 pounds. Researchers had expected to find that the slimmer Nigerian women would be more physically active. To their surprise, they found no significant difference between the two groups in the amount of calories burned during physical activity. ” [Link]

“Scientists at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hope to begin clinical trials this spring on a vaccine to prevent the recurrence of breast cancer. If successful, the vaccine would not replace traditional treatment such as chemotherapy and radiation but could be an additional treatment for patients, said Laura Hutchins, the principal investigator, professor of internal medicine, and director of the division of hematology and oncology.” [Link]
