“Steven Kelsey will appear in 52-1 District Court on Thursday, Feb. 19 for a preliminary examination on murder charges stemming from his sister Jesika Kelsey’s stabbing death, after waiving a preliminary exam on Wednesday, Jan. 7. According to Michael McCarthy, Kelsey’s court-appointed defense attorney, a decision hasn’t been made on whether Steven Kelsey will undergo a psychiatric evaluation.” [Link]

“Christine Beatty, once an influential figure at Detroit City Hall, waved goodbye to loved ones as she was ushered from a courtroom to begin a 120-day jail stay for obstruction of justice. She will serve her term in Wayne County jail, where Kilpatrick has been serving an identical sentence since late October. Beatty and Kilpatrick, both 38, were charged with lying about their affair under oath during a 2007 civil trial on claims that two police officers were punished for investigating alleged wrongdoing in the mayor’s inner circle.” [Link]

Her 19-year-old brother, Steven Michael Kelsey, has been charged in the slaying and has reportedly made statements implicating he killed his sister when she rejected sexual advances. “Jesika Kelsey, 17, was found slain in her parents’ Highland Township in Michigan home on New Year’s Day. Steven Kelsey, 19, was arrested later in a Fenton party store. Kelsey told the investigators, ‘I got a knife and I killed her,’ Detective Lt. James A’Hearn of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Unit told the magistrate at Kelsey’s arraignment.
