The Savior Of The Republican Party Plots His Exit Strategy

| | Comments (4)

Fred Thompson, who Instapundit pimped numerous times as a presidential candidate for his Tennessee credentials, is plotting to slink off in the high likelihood of an Iowa caucus "fail".

Several Republican officials close to Fred Thompson’s presidential campaign said they expect the candidate will drop out of the race within days if he finishes poorly in Thursday’s Iowa caucus.

Thompson’s campaign, which last spring and summer was generating fevered anticipation in the media and with some Republican activists, has never ignited nationally, and there are no signs of a late spark happening here in Iowa, where even a third-place finish is far from assured.

You remember how they were swooning over his idiotic web videos just months ago? Those were the days.

To be fair, the Politico isn't really offering much of a scoop here... honestly, save for Giuliani I'd think it's a given that anyone who doesn't place in the top three in Iowa is screwed. If Thompson bombs in Iowa he might have the funds to last until Super Tuesday but there's no way he's winning the nomination.

If Thompson does drop out and endorse McCain, though, I'm taking tomorrow off to just spend the day watching everyone on RedState write suicide notes.

You probably know by now that Thompson has denied this story.

Well of course he has. Doesn't mean it's not true.
