News At 11: Norv Turner Sucks

image ESPN NFL columnist Jeffri Chadiha:

I don't know how Turner screwed up a 14-2 team so quickly, but the odds are against the Chargers turning things around now that they're 1-3. They just look too confused and vulnerable at this stage.

Oooh, Oooh, pick me, I know I know. How has Norv Turner screwed up the Chargers?

HE'S NORV TURNER, that's how. Norv Turner has previously been the head coach of two NFL teams. Norv Turner was the head coach of the Washington Redskins from 1994-2000, compiling a record of 49-59. He had one playoff appearance. He then coached the Oakland Raiders in 2004 and 2005, in which he compiled a 9-23 record.

Norv Turner is one of the worst coaches in NFL history, yet somehow teams hire him to coach their multimillion dollar franchises and the media wonders what went wrong when he inevitably fails. Shocker.

Norv Turner has amassed a 59-85 career coaching record to date, and he keeps getting these jobs because when he was offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys they won the Superbowl multiple times. Now, presented with all this evidence, wouldn't you think the Cowboys offensive skill was more because of having hall of famers Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin on their roster than having Turner on the coaching staff? This guy has made a lot of money on Troy Aikman's arm, and it's time the NFL media quit getting surprised every time this loser of a coach takes the money and runs.

Look at this column in the San Diego Union Tribune. The writer, Tim Sullivan must have some serious blackmail fodder that Norv threatened him with, because what he's saying is ridiculous:

Though Turner's local reputation is trending toward the less flattering descriptions, the truth tends to be more complicated and less extreme. There is no single personality type that works in pro football, and no sure-fire formula for success. Tony Dungy is to Bill Cowher much as Bill Walsh was to Bill Parcells.

All of them won the Super Bowl. No two of them did it exactly the same way. Norv Turner's task is to prove that his way can work despite his previous difficulties (albeit with lesser players) in Oakland and Washington.

Turner has had great tools, average tools, and mediocre tools. He's been able to do NOTHING with any players of NFL caliber because he is not a good coach. To mention him in the same breath as those other coaches who actually know how to coach football is an insult. Tony Dungy has bowel movements that can run an NFL franchise better than Turner on his best day!

Is there a deeper pit in Hell than listening to Coach Norv press conference after a loss? I think not.

I've never confused Norv with Bill Walsh, but if the Chargers continue to implode like this, A.J. Smith has to take a larger piece of the blame. He should've either put up with Marty for another season or canned him the day after the NE loss and put Cameron or Phillips in his place. The way he handled that is the biggest reason why they are where they are.

That, and Phillip Rivers kinda sucks.

What a difference a Sunday makes.

On Rome's TV show the point has been made multiple times that Turner is probably a pretty good coordinator, but miscast in the head role. I think there's something to that.
