Another batch of thank you cards will have to be sent out next November. John McCain is the Republican probably best positioned to beat the Democratic nominee. And they're killing him.

There's a level of denial in the GOP base that began with the "Bush isn't really that conservative" trope, and it's led to them trying to find somebody who's really as conservative as they thought Bush was.
The irony being, of course, that Bush really was the right-wing ideologue they wanted, and attempting to run a candidate with the same positions in 2008 will only get them clobbered.
