New Year, Powerline Still Stupid

10:50 am EST January 13th, 2012 | Conservative | 37 Comments

The defense of Mitt Romney’s career as a corporate raider is in full sway, and especially how he’s a virtual lock for the nomination now, the usual conservative clowns are lining up like they always do in order to protect their cause. Case in point, the nimrods at Powerline (background on their years of stupidity) are asserting the following:

The Left is carrying out a coordinated attack on Mitt Romney’s business career. One sees exactly the same allegations, often phrased identically, whether you look at the Daily Kos, the Associated Press, Slate or Think Progress, or listen to Newt Gingrich or Rick Perry.

Apparently Newt Gingrich, leader of the conservative revolution in the House and Rick Perry, George W. Bush’s number two in Texas and a few months ago The Great Conservative Hope, are now part of a coordinated campaign between the left, the Associated Press and Slate (?) to take down Mitt Romney. It couldn’t be that Romney has a spotty career in the private sector. It couldn’t be that Romney has tried to disappear his time as governor and has put his career front and center. No. It has to be a conspiracy.

Because with the right, its always a conspiracy. It has been since at least 1964 when they were going on about the water being fluoridated by communists or in 2008 when they claimed that the housing collapse was a conspiracy of Democrats and poor people and not Wall Street. It’s always a conspiracy.

Because they are morons.

While I agreed with William F. Buckley about 0.01% of the time, at least he tried to purge the John Birchers out of the conservative movement. There isn’t anybody trying to purge the crazy nowadays. If anything, it’s more likely for the conservatives to purge the sane.

  2. Burn says:

The dickwads at Powerline don’t believe this shit, they put it out there because they know their readers are a bunch of slobbering dittohead losers who believe anything on a wingnut website. Divorced from reality barely scratches the surface with these cult lemmings. Same thing with Fox News or Rush Limpballs; they say ridiculous stupid things they don’t personally believe, but they know how fucking dumb and gullible their audience is.

  3. Marco21 says:

They’e just upset they have Mittens as their candidate.

  4. Can you blame them, Marco21, it’s like the question and answer by Andre Gide:

    Who is France’s greatest poet?
    Victor Hugo, alas.

  5. Ol Froth says:

Romney’s defenders keep pointing to Staples, but when Bain invested in Staples, it was still a classic venture capital firm, investing in startups with growth potential, and reaping the benefits from that company’s success. By the mid-90′s, Bain had turned into a corporate raider, buying up undervalued companies and extracting as much cash as possible from them prior to liquidation. There is a huge difference between the two models.

“They’e just upset they have Mittens as their candidate.”

If this is your definition of “upset” then conservatives can only hope they get angrier.

  7. Sean D. Martin says:

One sees exactly the same allegations, often phrased identically, whether you look at the Daily Kos, the Associated Press, Slate or Think Progress, or listen to Newt Gingrich or Rick Perry.

So are they disputing the allegations, or just objecting to the consistency with which they’re described?

And if the objection is to seeing exactly the same allegations reported in numerous places, well, wouldn’t you EXPECT the story to be essentially the same whatever news outlet you tend to get it from?

  8. Enlightened Liberal says:

They really want to point to Staples? A company that put thousands of Mom and Pop office supply retailers out of business? A company that pays it’s workers poor wages and benefits? Alrighty then.

  9. August J. Pollak says:

If this is your definition of “upset” then conservatives can only hope they get angrier.

“34% of Republicans and independents who lean towards the GOP say they’re likely to support the former Massachusetts governor for the nomination”

Only a third of Republicans support the likely nominee. So…. yes? Conservatives SHOULD hope they get angrier? Right?

Oops, I think you forgot you were trying to make us feel BAD or something. You wanna try your comment again?

  11. Marco21 says:

Can’t wait till the trot out the “president Obama is an elitist” BS with Mitt as their candidate.

  12. Jaim says:

Elections are all about motivating people to leave the house and vote.

Please don’t tell me the GOP doesn’t have a major motivation problem when Mormon Mitt gets the nod.

The Teabaggers will either a) stay home or b) vote for a kooky third party candidate like Palin or Paul.

S’beautiful. The Republican party is dying painfully.

  13. I don’t know why you object to anyone thinking there is a conspiracy. That is infinitely preferable to the likely alternative: The people on the Left are incapable of independent thought… This weblog provides multiple examples of that on a daily basis.

Oh, and Jaim, if by “dying” you mean taking the White House and both houses of Congress in 2012, I agree.

Late October, 1980 : The Press says Reagan and Carter are “neck and neck”…

Because with the right, its always a conspiracy. It has been since at least 1964
And since 1964, it has been the practice of the Left to completely falsify conservative statements and beliefs. To wit, the people who believed that fluoridating the water was a dangerous plot ( a minority, even among conservatives ) believed it was a government plot, not a Communist plot, and in the 2008 , no Republican ever said that the Democrats conspired with the poor, or anyone for that matter. The facts are that the government put pressure in banks to give out high-risk mortgages, and this was done due to prodding by Democrats like Frank and Dodd. The shenanigans at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were covered up by Democrats. The Republicans will be happy to admit that Wall Street played a role in it , especially right after the Democrats admit that they have taken millions in contributions from Wall Street, and that they – the Democrats – also played a major role in the 2008 collapse. When will that happen ? When pigs are flying over a hockey game in hell…

    Also, FDS said:

Oh, and Jaim, if by “dying” you mean taking the White House and both houses of Congress in 2012, I agree.

In exactly which Detective Comics “Elseworlds” storyline will that take place?

  16. Zython says:

That is infinitely preferable to the likely alternative: The people on the Left are incapable of independent thought…

Frank, it only seems that way to you because, unlike conservatives, we base our points of view on things like “facts”. I’m sure you can have a plethora of diverse viewpoints when you aren’t tied down by things like “knowledge” or “awareness of the world around you”. That is, you would be if you weren’t getting talking points from various talking heads and wingnut newsletters.

And since 1964, it has been the practice of the Left to completely falsify conservative statements and beliefs.

Frank, how many times do I have to explain this to you? Just because you WISH someone hadn’t said something doesn’t mean they magically didn’t. We have this thing called “recorded media” that allows us to document all the embarrassing things conservatives have said and done. Ever heard of it? I use it all the time to demonstrate what a dumbass you are.

The Republicans will be happy to admit that Wall Street played a role in it , especially right after the Democrats admit that they have taken millions in contributions from Wall Street, and that they – the Democrats – also played a major role in the 2008 collapse.

And the Republicans are SO upset at Wall St. that they’re…pushing for a hedge-fund manager as PotUS…

    Huh…

The facts are that the government put pressure in banks to give out high-risk mortgages, and this was done due to prodding by Democrats like Frank and Dodd.

How many times do I have to link this before you stop embarrassing yourself?

Late August, 2008 : The Press says Obama and McCain are “neck and neck”…

Fox News poll: 2012 Obama-Romney race would be tight

    By Dana Blanton

    Published January 15, 2012

President Barack Obama and Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney are essentially tied in a hypothetical general election matchup. Still, Obama’s support is stronger and more positive than Romney’s.

Someone is sucking here, and not just at reproducing the latest Freeper talking points……………

  20. db says:

    dufthom,

You’ve got a big mouth. You willing to put any money behind it?

I’ll bet a $50 donation to the charity of your choice that Romney will not be President of the USA in Jan 2013.

Oliver to hold the stakes (if he’s willing)

    Put up or shut up.

  21. Christopher Foxx says:

dufthom: Your obozo is going down in a hurry and you will be back sucking on the tit of the gov’t in a few short months.

So you’re saying Obama will lose, yet the subsequent Republican administration will still strongly support welfare programs.

    Interesting.

  22. Randy Brown says:

dufthom: From my foot to your syphillitic ass.

  23. Jaim says:

Like I said, the GOP is dying and it’s beautiful. They’re losing their fucking minds, and die-hard Teabaggers will never vote for Mormon Mitt.

    /sniffle

  24. db says:

    Jaim,

I’m not sure the Teabaggers won’t hold their noses & vote for Mitt as Jon Stewart has suggested several times. There does look to be an “enthusiasm gap” though.

But in the words of the immortal Han Solo, “Don’t get cocky, kid.” There are many things that can still go wrong & from what we’ve seen in SC, WI. MI, AZ, KS, TX & the other States with Tea Party Governors, Tea Party Government is truly ugly.

  25. Buzz Killington says:

I hate that people vote so simplistically, but it seems to me that if Romney gets the nomination, the economy will decide who wins in November. More specifically, if employment is not still not (significantly) on the rise, Romney will win, but if it is Obama will stay.

I hope Paul sticks around long enough to get his ideas on civil liberties and foreign policy into the public mind (and into the general debates), though.

  26. Enlightened Liberal says:

Romney is doomed. Economy is getting better, but even if it wasn’t Romney’s only solution is to cut his own taxes. He has very little charisma and can’t even deliver his own base. If the economy is on the rise, I’m thinking FDR in 1936 margins.

  27. Ol Froth says:

Don’t forget us poor folks in PA db, we’ve got a governor who just instituted asset testing for food stamp eligibility. Got more that $2000 in assets? No food stamps for you!

  28. db says:

    Thank you Ol,

How much is a bed worth? A sofa? A refrigerator? $2g doesn’t go far.

It worries me when guys like EL, Jaim, & some of the others treat the election like it’s in the bag. As Buzz points out there’s lots that can go wrong. I’m also troubled by the LW attacks on President Obama for not being liberal enough. Like there was anything more to do that could have gotten beyond the obstructionist Republicans in Congress.

I don’t think they realize exactly how much worse things can get.

    But I’m off topic, sorry.

  29. isms says:

Mitt has the nomination in the bag ’cause of his strong chin …

  30. Jaim says:

Oh, I don’t think the election is in the bag. November is a long ways off, and the economic recovery could stall.

But I do think that we’re seeing a “high watermark” of sorts in the GOP — they unleashed the Teabaggers in the hopes that it would fire people up. Instead, they got their asses handed to them in.

Look, Mitt Romney used to be a mainstream Republican. But he’s going to win the nomination, and in order to do so he has had to suck the dicks of every ultra-kooky rightwing fascist Bircher/Birther out there.

The GOP might hang around for a few more election cycles, but in the long-term it’s dead.

    It’s beautiful.

But your concern trolling is duly noted.

Newt wanted an open marriage? Let’s watch him squirm out of this one.

  35. Jaim says:

Eagerly awaiting the “librul” New York Times and WaPo informing us that the new book on the Obamas shows they’ve had some fights, so that’s totally equal to Newt divorcing two women who were gravely ill, marrying three times, and now this.

    Both sides do it!

  36. isms says:

Waiting for Santorum to be outed … eagerly. I have a hunch.

  37. db says:

    Jaim,

I’m with you that the SCLM bends over backward to avoid leaving itself open to the “Liberal Media” charge. Just look how Politico tries to keep the balance of Democrats & Republicans in the Poli-fact section. Problem is that the Conservative Media won’t give up the charge, whatever happens. Who was that Greek Dude, tied to a tree & every time he bent to drink, the water would recede just out of his reach?

    isms,

Santorum is a Conservative Roman Catholic. Nerd, I’ll give you, but I’ll cover the gay bet. Santorum will not admit he’s gay within five years. Loser to give $25 to the charity of the other’s choice.
