Republican Mike Castle On Tea Party Advocacy: “Beyond The Norm”

Mike Castle is a sort of moderate Republican threatened in his primary by the very nutty Tea Party backed candidate Christine O’Donnell (listen to her meltdown here). Check out what he says about the Tea Party:
‘Some of the things they seem to advocate go beyond the norm,’ says Castle. ‘I have trouble distinguishing sometimes between the factions out there that are in this ultra-conservative mode. You know—be it the patriots, or this Tea Party Express, or the different factions of the Tea Party. I’ve seen advocacy for eliminating the Department of Education, for example.’
He’s interrupted again—’Hi, Debbie!’—but keeps musing on how Tea Party activists shout down legislation by saying it’s unconstitutional.
‘There are a lot of things that the federal government does that, you know, might not be explicitly in the Constitution per se,’ says Castle. ‘There are a lot of things that the states do, too. And they’ve been doing it in some cases since the 18th century.’ He shrugs. ‘I do suppose it is a good question to ask.’
Here’s a scary thought: Today’s mainstream GOP is an outgrowth of the Bircher-style Goldwater revolution, and the Tea Party types think they’re too moderate.
FYI: Chris Coons is the Democratic nominee for this seat. The polls seem to indicate that if O’Donnell is on the ballot, he’s got a good shot at winning.

Really hope Castle loses his primary. It would be very sweet to see another Teabagger hand us a seat.

I hardly think we’ll “clean up”, but we will avoid disaster and hopefully hold on to both houses in a year that could have ended up like 1994. The teabaggers are a delightfully effective fifth column within the GOP.
