Obama Redesigns Oval Office In Subtle Stab At America’s Heart

3:36 pm EST August 31st, 2010 | News | 31 Comments

I am nearly 1000% certain some wingnut is going to make a Fox News story out of the oval office redesign.

When President Obama addresses the nation on Iraq on Tuesday night, he will do so from newly redecorated digs. The look, which includes new and reupholstered furniture and new paint and wallpaper, is more modern and tends toward neutral hues of brown and taupe, rather than the gold and yellow tones favored by his predecessor, George W. Bush.

Gone is the sunburst rug that Mr. Bush loved so much; designed by his wife, Laura, he used to say it evoked a spirit of optimism. In its place is a more muted, mostly wheat and cream-colored carpet featuring the presidential seal in the center, and ringed on its edge with five quotations selected by Mr. Obama – four from former presidents (Lincoln, Kennedy and both Roosevelts) and one from the Rev Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

MARTIN LUTHER KING? But he was a scary black nationalist who wanted to SPREAD THE WEALTH AROUND! Back to you, Glenn.

ALSO The Times notes the quotations on the rug:

“The Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself” – President Franklin D. Roosevelt

“The Arc of the Moral Universe Is Long, But It Bends Towards Justice” – Martin Luther King Jr.

“Government of the People, By the People, For the People” – President Abraham Lincoln

“No Problem of Human Destiny Is Beyond Human Beings” – President John F. Kennedy

“The Welfare of Each of Us Is Dependent Fundamentally Upon the Welfare of All of Us” – President Theodore Roosevelt

2 Republicans from before they went nuts, 2 Democrats, and one Greatest American ever.

Hmmmm…I don’t think that Lincoln or TR went nuts. Their party, however…..

  2. Burn says:

Don’t worry, when the GOP takes the House this fall, they can immediately start hearings and investigations into such a criminal, unethical and blatant Muslim Socialist act of defiance. More proof Obama isn’t one of us, rather he’s one of ‘them’.

  3. Wanna make a bet that PoxTV will zoom in on the words “FEAR” & “WELFARE” ?

Why, Oh WHY can’t the idiots who HAVE the majority do some investigating and subpeoning?

    I want America back!!

  9. Suicidal says:

Looks pretty similar in color to Reagans Oval Office although I think the seal grabs your attention more than Reagans.

I guess Snopes will have to update this page:

If he were actually to do his job and get unemployment back under 6% and the deficit back under $300M, he could hang a Flava Flave clock around the Churchill bust and cover everything in Kente cloth for all I care.

Man, all that redecorating must have been hard. Looks like it’s time for another well-deserved vacation!

  12. Wilbur says:

See, contrary to the whining of the right, we don’t call every criticism of Obama racist, only those criticisms that suggest the president would like to hang rap memorabilia and tribal threads around the whitehouse.

Oh and Ferris, nice try at the vacation smear, but we’re on to you:

Veteran CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller, a fastidious keeper of presidential statistics, has kept count. By his tally, Obama has embarked on nine “vacations” since taking office, bringing his total days off to 48. Some of those trips lasted a day and some, like his Christmas holiday in Hawaii, more than a week.

By comparison, Bush had visited his ranch in Crawford, Tex., 14 times at this point in his administration and spent 115 days there.

  13. The quotes reveal him to be what all Democrats always deny they are: A dyed in the wool, card carrying liberal, with all the trimmings.

2 years, 4 months and 21 days, thank God !

  14. Ol'Froth says:

Will you ass have healed enough for the next kicking it will receive by then Frank?

  15. Wilbur says:

    Ooh yeah!

Teddy Roosevelt: what a fuckin’ liberal moonbat.

Frank DiSalle: Hard to believe someone can be so pompous, and clueless at the same.

  16. Sean D. Martin says:

Frank DiSalle: The quotes reveal him to be what all Democrats always deny they are: A dyed in the wool, card carrying liberal, with all the trimmings.

You say that as if it’s a bad thing.

  17. SpiderJ says:

You’re right, Frank, he should have chosen one of those terribly quotable and inspirational things that the last couple of Republican presidents said. “Bring it on” and “Watch this drive” would be particularly presidential.

  18. Felix Helix says:

I want to know what this liberal “card” is that Frank refers to, so that I can carry one. That would be so neat. Then, if anyone were to doubt my liberal credentials, I could whip out my card and prove it. That’d show them!

Uh . . . except that all Democrats always deny that they are liberals, according to Frank. All of them. Always. Which I guess means that none of them can show their card. Which begs the question of why they would have it in the first place.

    Seriously, who carries cards anymore?

Also too: who, besides Frank, mashes together three cliches in a single sentence to create the weird image of Obama as an orange sheep’s head surrounded by potatoes and carrots and parsley with a card in its mouth?

  19. Ol’ Froth , luckily for me I have no idea what you are talking about.
    Sean, I appreciate your honesty.
Wilbur, you clown. I didn’t say Teddy Roosevelt was a liberal. I said the quotes underscore the fact that Pres Obama is a liberal. Is lacking the ability to understand plain English the same as, better than , or worse than, being clueless?
    Felix : Huh?

  20. Dennis says:

Well, Felix, it was a very popular thing for liberals to say right after the 2008 election that they were finally proud to say out loud that they were liberals. You don’t read that statement much any more these days. Shoot, just as recently as last summer there were several of you guys here saying you wished Obama were a socialist, and actually wanting him to take us more toward a socialist-style form of government. Seems you don’t read that here at all anymore, either.

Guess times have changed, haven’t they?

  21. Repack Rider says:

it was a very popular thing for liberals to say right after the 2008 election that they were finally proud to say out loud that they were liberals.

I have been proud of my liberal philosophy all my life. I have never made a secret of my patriotism. Where do you get “finally?”

  22. Dennis says:

I Am a Liberal. There, I Said It!
    by George Clooney

Where are those kinds of speeches now, Repack. You’re in freakin’ Walnut Creek, California. Of course you’re still going to pronounce your Maoist philosophy out loud and out proud. You’re cocooned and fortified by layers upon layers upon layers of liberal barriers to entry by the outside conservative onslaught heading your way. No one else can hear you but other liberals.

  23. Wilbur says:

Wilbur, you clown. I didn’t say Teddy Roosevelt was a liberal. I said the quotes underscore the fact that Pres Obama is a liberal.

Well you must mean that at least that particular quotation by Teddy Roosevelt was condemnably “liberal”. Since Teddy Roosevelt was one of the best of American conservatives, that only shows how far from true conservatism the monstrosity known as the modern American “conservative” has devolved.

  24. hnice says:

“what all Democrats always deny ”

I don’t deny it. You’re wrong. Moving on.

(I know, this is the part where by ‘all’ you meant something other than ‘all’, kind of like how when i call you an ‘assclown’ i really mean ‘nice guy’.)

  25. Enlightened Liberal says:

If he were actually to do his job and get unemployment back under 6% and the deficit back under $300M,

If Bush did his job, the figures wouldn’t be that high to start with.

he could hang a Flava Flave clock around the Churchill bust and cover everything in Kente cloth for all I care.

But Clinton did that and your ilk STILL assails him as a failed president.

  26. Mike says:

Frank, if the American people vote in someone other than Obama in 2012, it will mean that they’re like you: evil, self-loathing, stupid, and treasonous.

  27. Prodigal says:

That was totally unfair, Mike. Frank’s probably not self-loathing.

  28. SpiderJ says:

I still don’t understand, Frank. Teddy Roosevelt was not a liberal, you say, but the quotation was liberal? But doesn’t that compromise Teddy’s purity of essence to have said something liberal?

    “Teddy Roosevelt, RINO!”

  29. I'm a Hick says:

TR was a Progressive when he ran in 1912.

  30. Wilbur says:

TR was a Progressive when he ran in 1912.

That was back when conservatives were not opposed to progress. How times have changed!

  31. Sean D. Martin says:

Frank DiSalle: Sean, I appreciate your honesty.

Thanks. I’d appreciate some in return.
