Rhetorically they lock arms with their American cousins on the right.

About 700 protesters from a far-right group have clashed with hundreds of riot police in northern England.

The English Defense League activists threw bottles, rocks and a smoke bomb at the riot police after the authorities penned in the protesters to keep them away from an opposing demonstration by a leftist group, United Against Fascism.

As in America, the neo-fascists of the English Defense League are on the right side of the political spectrum.

    That is redundant. Fascism is, by definition, right wing. That is why Jonah Goldberg’s Liberal Fascism is considered by all informed people to be laughable on its face.

    Not to say the left wing doesn’t ever overlap with repressive or coercive policy. It just doesn’t overlap with fascism.

    The word “fascism”, like the word “organic”, gets used and understood by all sorts of people who don’t know what it means. It doesn’t just mean whatever you want it to mean. It has a specific definition and a specific history. Ignorance of the language is no excuse for crimes against it.

    I don’t see that the folks are racist. I am prepared to believe that they are, but there’s evidence of extreme religious intolerance, not of race hatred. In other words, I doubt that they would be bothering a bunch of South Asian Christians (of which there are many, though few from Pakistan.)

    We do know that they are vicious assholes.

    In 2001, riots occurred there between whites and South Asian immigrants.

    Tell me again how they resemble conservatives?

    When and where has anything even remotely resembling this happened here?

    Hi, Frank. If I may, I’ll clarify for DA. That was from A Fish Called Wanda, which was a movie. It concerned a character called Otto, who possessed a certain native cunning but was not the smartest guy around; he also thought he was an intellectual, because he read philosophy. However, as it turns out, Otto was a bit dumb (see above quotation), in fact, too dumb to realise that he wasn’t smart.

    What DA is doing is comparing you to Otto – he’s insinuating that you affect a patina of intelligence while being fundamentally stupid.

    I thought you were exactly correct when you included it. The folks you refer to do indeed believe they “understand” what the words they use mean. That they in fact don’t was perfectly described by your “gets … understood by all sorts of people who don’t know what it means.”
