Filibuster Reform Isn’t Happening

I’m not quite sure why anyone believes Senate Democrats when they say they’re going to do anything to reform the filibuster. Frankly, its just more honest when some go on the record and say they’re opposed. The senate is a club that trumps any sort of party label. They’re in the racket of protecting each other and their power. Both parties have decided to stage phony filibusters because to engage in a real filibuster would involve some actual work. The filibuster is broken, it won’t be fixed.

  1. Thad says:

I said back in ’05, when the Republicans were threatening to declare filibustering unconstitutional, that the Democrats should let them. The filibuster is an inherently conservative tool.

I’m sure there were a few Bush schemes the Dems foiled with filibusters. I can’t think of any offhand, but I’m sure they exist. But imagine where we’d be right now if the Republicans couldn’t filibuster.

…who am I kidding. Another 8 Democrats would just decide they love attention as much as Liberman and Nelson and play swing vote.
