Switzerland Loves Child Rapists, Releases Roman Polanski

Particularly ones named Roman Polanski.

Swiss authorities said that Roman Polanski was a free man on Monday after rejecting a request to extradite the film director to the United States to answer for a child sex case dating back to 1977.

‘The Franco-Polish film-maker will not be extradited to the United States and the measures of restriction on his liberty have been lifted,’ Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf told reporters at a news conference in Geneva.

I’m sure the moral filth in Hollywood that cheers on this sick bastard will be ecstatic. Not “rape, rape” right Whoopi?

Switzerland: Because we’re Neutral on everything, even child rape.

Although Polanski’s victim did not want to revisit the incident via a traumatic and media frenzied trial, it’s just incredibly sad that this creep can dodge accountability through a series of technicalities.

Those in Hollywood and elsewhere in the entertainment industry rushing to defend him are simply worthless.

I suppose he’ll meet with justice in the afterlife, if you believe in that sorta thing.

Celebrities can do no wrong in Switzerland

Polanski can do no one among celebrities.

Why? The Pope says there’s nothing wrong with it!

What really gets me about this is the complete double standard we see from Hollywood with regard to Polanksi vis a vis Mel Gibson. Gibson is now a pariah in Hollywood because of what he has said. I’m not defending what Gibson said as it was vile and racist.

But I guarantee you won’t see people lining up to defend him. There won’t be petitions of support for him. Any chance he ever had at winning an Oscar again has gone out the window.

Wouldn’t a statute of limitations have run out in this case?

  10. Patrick says:

Never mind, I see that he fled the US after conviction.

I’m an “artist,” and I can say the Hollywood desire to coddle Pulanski because he’s a famous “artist” makes me want to vomit. Imagine if he were a plumber or an accountant.

  12. Fred says:

I loathe Polanski and wanted to see him brought back to justice, but the reason given for his release is that the US refused to provide the Swiss court with testimony that was needed to ascertain whether he had completed his sentence as it was originally handed down.

Granted the original sentence was a very bad joke, but it appears that the Swiss were simply following the law and the rules of the extradition treaty.

Not sure the Swiss are the bad guys here. I’d question the US court system that 1) gave Polanski the original totally inadequate sentence and 2) refused to provide documents that were required to rule in favor of extradition.

Does the Catholic church want him as a priest now?

This makes me feel guilty for having gone to see “The Ghost Writer.” (Don’t rent it. It’s dull and culminates in an absolutely nonsensical plot twist.)

  15. Todd B. says:

Did he not get convicted and serve his time in prison? He was sentenced to 90 days and released early.

If you want to blame anyone, blame the US justice system for not recommending a harsher penalty or not releasing him early if they actually thought he was guilty.

  16. isms says:

Seems like the US loved them even more for such a bogus sentence. But then again, the severity of these terrible crimes is just recently being acknowledged by the legal system. Just look at how much abuse the RCC has gotten away with.

“…but the reason given for his release is that the US refused to provide the Swiss court with testimony that was needed…”

    It’s Barack Obama’s fault!

/not really, though it might be Holder’s

Let’s at least remember that it was the Swiss who noticed that Polanski was coming and notified the American authorities, asking if they should take action on the warrant. The US guys were initially surprised and a bit uncertain about the matter of this old warrant, but woke up soon enough and asked them to arrest him. That’s kind of a long way from a Swiss policy of just loving rapists. And according to Fred (I haven’t looked at the into yet, but I assume he’s got it right, given the background of the case), they let him go after all this time because that’s what the law required.

Sad to let the bastard walk. But deciding he’s Really Really Bad and we’ll just ignore the law is something we can leave to Republicans. They do it so well.

BTW Polanski had served some time, but he still owed more, and was in a legal state like being out on bail. In fact, I think he was out on bail. On jumping bail, the statute of limitations takes a long time to run out, if it ever does.
