Chuck Schumer: Strangle Gaza

chuck schumerAmazingly offensive world view from Sen. Chuck Schumer:

SCHUMER: The Palestinian people still don’t believe in the Jewish state, in a two-state solution. More do than before, but a majority still do not. Their fundamental view is, the Europeans treated the Jews badly and gave them our land — this is Palestinian thinking [...] They don’t believe in the Torah, in David [...] You have to force them to say Israel is here to stay. The boycott of Gaza to me has another purpose — obviously the first purpose is to prevent Hamas from getting weapons by which they will use to hurt Israel — but the second is actually to show the Palestinians that when there’s some moderation and cooperation, they can have an economic advancement. When there’s total war against Israel, which Hamas wages, they’re going to get nowhere. And to me, since the Palestinians in Gaza elected Hamas, while certainly there should be humanitarian aid and people not starving to death, to strangle them economically until they see that’s not the way to go, makes sense.

One of the biggest obstacles to any progress in the middle east is the kneejerk, blind to any objective fact support that is given to everything Israel is done by members of congress. The stupidity cuts across party, and it ends up undercutting presidential efforts to broker things. Furthermore, regardless of what you think of the leaders and terror elements in the Gaza strip, there are actual human beings there.

Sick.

Attacking unions and dehumanizing Palestinians all in the same week.

  2. Southern Quaker says:

So does Shumer get as much flack for this as Helen Thomas did for her comments on Jews in Palestine?

    Survey says not bloody likely.

Well of course he will. And the Mighty Mississip’ is going to be filled with tasty hummus also.

  4. cj says:

Helen Thomas/columnist stated an opinion (no real threat to Jews in Israel). Chuck Schumer/US Senator is stating a REAL policy “to strangle them economically” that the Israeli government is doing (a threat to Palestinians in Gaza).

So when will he be force to retire?

  5. cj says:

Also why do they(Palestinians) have to believe in the Torah, Mr Schumer? Do Israelis believe in the Qur’an? Or in Christianity?

  6. Bitter Scribe says:

Just watch. The wingnuts will still go on saying Obama is insufficiently respectful of Israel. After all, he did excuse himself from Netanyahu’s presence to eat dinner, or something.

  7. cj says:

Not sure if anything will come about from this but….

Right-wingers in the Israeli government are trying to pass a bill that will have the Palestinians pay for any boycott brought up against Israel.

    They have no shame.

“Their fundamental view is, the Europeans treated the Jews badly and gave them our land — this is Palestinian thinking” And is there anything INCORRECT about these thoughts?? Seems like precisely what happened. Why didn’t they give some land in Germany for a Jewish Nation??

  10. The Balfour Declaration, promising the Jews a homeland in Israel, dates back to 1917, not 1945. The Palestinians were already living in Jordan, when they were booted out – was that Israel’s fault?
You are not going to see how Israel behaves when they are not being attacked, because they are never NOT being attacked. And, incidentally, even the Arabs are not above using Israel for their own ends.

Because Germany is not the spiritual center of the Jewish faith.

It’s unfortunate that three major religions whose adherents are often intensely intolerant of each other happen to have the same physical focus point, but there it is. And there is something to be said for giving each of these religions space in the vicinity of that focus point to worship freely and unafraid. Giving land to the Jewish people was a fine idea. So, theoretically, is drilling a well a mile under the seabed. Sure — as long as you can do it safely, without causing a disaster. And if you can’t? Well, then you have a problem.

Certain standards must apply to international relations, regardless of who’s right or wrong in any given situation. If you can’t meet these standards, you do not belong in the brotherhood of nations — you’re a rogue state to be marginalized and, if necessary, punished.

Standards include things like, say, not killing or imprisoning people for disagreeing with the government. Or, say, besieging an area so that the civilians within it are denied basic necessities. Like this:

The harmful effects of the blockade on Gazan civilians have included the denial of the basics of life, such as food, fuel and medicine, as well widespread economic collapse.

The UN agency on the ground, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), has described a “severe humanitarian crisis” in Gaza in relation to human development, health, education, “the psychological stress” on the population, high unemployment (at 45 per cent) and poverty (with 300,000 people living beneath the poverty line), and the collapse of commerce, industry and agriculture.

That’s what Israel is doing to the people of Gaza in retaliation for the terrorism of the democratically elected Hamas. Both sides are in the wrong here, but it doesn’t matter who’s wrong if you’re living in Gaza.

Chuck Schumer and Helen Thomas and every other kneejerk prophet whose handy solution involves the forced displacement or economic “strangulation” of civilians? They can all go take a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut.

    HELL no.

Strangle everybody. Turn it all off. Pull the plug and let them duke it out. Why do we even care anymore?

  14. anotherbozo says:

Wish we could trade Schumer for Anthony Weiner or Alan Grayson, both born in NY. He’s such a schlub and a suckup, too.

  15. El Cid says:

As Juan Cole reminded, Muslims (ignoring the fact that many of the Palestinians are Christian, but apparently still not real people) actually do revere both Torah and David in the Qur’aan.
