Palm Pre

Considering how much of a fail Palm Pre has been, this seems like a mistake.

HP and Palm, Inc. today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which HP will purchase Palm, a provider of smartphones powered by the Palm webOS mobile operating system, at a price of $5.70 per share of Palm common stock in cash or an enterprise value of approximately $1.2 billion. The transaction has been approved by the HP and Palm boards of directors.

I love my Palm Pre and I love my HP tablet (not so much the Vista OS). Makes me wonder how cool the future HP tablet will be. But I know that I am the odd man out.

From what I understand, Palm has a lot of patents that could be valuable even if HP doesn’t actually make use of their mobile device/OS. It’s a bit of a shame to see how far Palm has fallen. I had several Palm OS devices that were pretty good for their time. But the iPhone mades them look prehistoric. By the time the Pre came out, it was basically too late.

HP used to be the best electronic/instrumentation company in the world. Almost sounds like Carly Fiorina is in charge. I still am pissed at her for the Compaq deal. If HP wanted the patents, wouldn’t it have been cheaper to license them?

Speaking of Carly, her political opponents in CA should drag out the facts about her tenure at HP at every opportunity.

Palm Pre isn’t necessarily a fail. It’s not sold very well, but the phone is universally liked by people that have it. It’s a marketing issue, not a UI issue.

This is all about HP getting into the mobile OS business and Palms Web OS is considered to be one of the best. It’s a shrewd (read: cheap) price for them.

I used to have a Palm Treo and it was vastly superior to my Blackberry, easier to use, better organized, just generally more user friendly. I tell everyone who’s looking into a smartphone to get Palm over Blackberry.

You can have my Apple Newton when you pry it from my cold, dead hands…

i still have my Palm Tungsten Z and I rue the day when it dies. The Palm OS is much better than Windows CE, so that’s win right there.
