Comedy Central Capitulates To Radical Islam

3:33 pm EST April 22nd, 2010 | Religion | 47 Comments

Ridiculous.

Muhammad appeared on Wednesday night’s episode of the cartoon with his body obscured by a black box, since Muslims consider a physical representation of their prophet to be blasphemous. Last week, the character was believed to be disguised in a bear costume. When that same costume was removed this week, Santa Claus appeared.

The bear costume had angered the New York-based group Revolution Muslim, which posted a message on its website saying that producers Trey Parker and Matt Stone had insulted their prophet.

No religion is above ridicule. None.

I will forever picture Muhammad as a giant teddy bear – with a lot of wacky, dangerous followers.

CC gets the finger for this one.

  2. mambochicken23 says:

    Fucking Comedy Central.

  3. Rex Mundane says:

Here’s the only time they ever depicted Muhammad, way before 9/11 upset the sensibilities of, of all people, radical jihadist muslims. Their complaint isn’t that Muhammad would have been depicted doing anything embarassing (bear-suit fakeout aside) but depicted at all. They’re offended by the very existence of people who refuse to obey the rules they set, so much so that they’ll threaten the lives of, for God’s sake, cartoonists. Why these people aren’t arrested already for the threats is beyond me.

  4. Jay says:

I wouldn’t blame this on Comedy Central. The order probably came down from CS’s owners, Viacom.

  5. Uh-huh. Comedy Central must be reeling from having their top rated show mentioned on every news site in the world now. But that’s just cynical, I mean absolutely no one ever posts images of Mohammed just as a publicity stunt.

    Yep.

  6. Rheinhard says:

All I know is this proves that we need to hurry up and bomb Iran!

  7. durablend says:

And find the president’s “real” birth certificate!

  8. Oliver says:

You really think South Park needs a PR boost? I don’t.

  9. SaveFarris says:

    Islam = religion of Peace!

  10. When does a network ever NOT need free publicity? Is there a point when they think they are making too much free money?

The “shocked and outraged” Parker and Stone will NOT be quitting their jobs in protest, instead choosing to fume about this by… umm… turning in a new episode next week and continuing to be the second and third highest paid television producers in Hollywood. And the “controversial, uncensored” version of this episode will be available on DVD on the Comedy Central website within six weeks. Count on it.

  11. Zython says:

Look, I understand the problem with showing the image of Muhammad and whatnot, but the bleeps were just plain irritating.

Hopefully, Matt & Trey will push the envelope further against CC. After all, that’s why South Park became so popular in the first place.

  12. PTCruiser says:

Does anyone know where these strictures regarding depictions of the Prophet Muhammad originate. I don’t think they are set out in the Koran.

  13. rat_bastard says:

Jews Have the same rule, I’d imagine they both spring from the 3rd commandment.

  14. fafaroo says:

Artists should be able to depict whatever they want without censorship, whether its Muhammad doing nothing or christ in piss. Whatever.

But it’s also kind of interesting, maybe even more so, when artists abide by the traditions governing representations of say, Muhammad.

Don’t know how many people here have seen the 1976 film The Message (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074896/) but it’s three hour, Hollywood-style Koranic epic about the life of Muhammad in which Muhammad is never heard nor seen.

It’s really fascinating how they work around the limitation of having a main character that cannot be depicted.

  15. Rex Mundane says:

In a new little twist, SouthParkStudios.com has now, per Comedy Central order, removed the previous episode “Super Best Friends” from the website.

Bill Maher’s Religulous was on the other day, and he was talking to people about the whole Cartoon-Jihad thing, namely people in the Muslim community. They all said they thought the protests were unnecessary, and when asked about the Theo Van Gogh killing said it was an unfortunate tragedy. Asked directly about whether it is ever okay to kill someone for insulting or even just depicting Muhammad, they all floundered pathetically. “Well, no, you see its so much more complicated than that, it is fundamental to the rules that are observed by-” and such, and every time Bill just said “No, you know, it would just be enough to say that nobody should die because of a cartoon. Why can’t you just say that?”

With all due respect to any Muslim who may be reading these words, if you cannot say, simply, that nobody should have to die in the name of an unflattering cartoon, then you must understand you are no better than the murderers you pretend, pathetically, to decry. Go forth and fuck yourselves.

  16. mambochicken23 says:

They really did take it down. Man. How fucking pathetic.

    Agree 100% with you.

  17. Quaker in a Basement says:

Last week, the character was believed to be disguised in a bear costume.

    That’s funny all by itself.

  18. canadian bacon says:

    How Canadian

  19. canadian bacon says:

    America = freedom of speech

    What ya say Farris? Fair?

  20. canadian bacon says:

This is what happens when your President is Muslim.

  21. mambochicken23 says:

First, they transported him in a U-Haul trailer so that he couldn’t be seen. Then they slapped the bear mascot costume on him.

Frankly, I think that is (or should be) more offensive than merely showing a depiction of Muhammed. I mean, what’s worse, showing a shot of the guy or dressing him up in a fucking bear costume? What is more ridiculous?

But then, I’m not a religious wackjob. So perhaps it’s beyond me.

  22. jr says:

I wonder what ZOMGitsCriss will say about this

  23. I can’t help but wonder : Jesus is a recurring character on South Park , with little or no complaint, and he is considered by Christians to be either God or the Son of God.
Mohammed is not Allah, not God, and yet no sooner do two kooky guys draw him in a cartoon , then some Muslims come out of the woodwork to threaten their lives. In all the uproar over “Piss Christ” (mentioned above) no one threatened to kill anyone.
But, somehow, the Left sees an equivalency, or attempts to distinguish the so called “moderate Muslims” – who seem to be in the “witness of terrorism program,” because you can never find one to call anything the Islamofascists do, terrorism – from the Islamic terrorists, who seem to be everywhere but the front porch. Yet we pretend that worrying about them is “pearl clenching.”

  24. canadian bacon says:

Multiculturalism is a snake pit and you either adapt or you carry a big stick.

  25. abanterer says:

Andres Serrano, the artist behind ‘Piss Christ’, had his other work vandalized by Neo-Nazis and Piss Christ was attacked in the museum by some patrons. And yeah, he got death threats and hate mail and lost grants for it too. So, pretty much exactly what Parker and Stone got, except that they won’t lose money for this ep.

  26. abanterer says:

God Damn it! If I hadn’t stopped to read the articles, I would have beaten you, August.

So, I’ll mention the Chocolate Jesus, and mention how THAT got death threats too. See? There was a use for those old Dollar Store Chocolate bars!

  27. Rex Mundane says:

“But, somehow, the Left sees an equivalency, or attempts to distinguish the so called “moderate Muslims” – who seem to be in the “witness of terrorism program,” because you can never find one to call anything the Islamofascists do, terrorism – from the Islamic terrorists, who seem to be everywhere but the front porch.”

The people of RevolutionMuslim.com who made the threats? Terrorists by any reasonable definition. Perhaps not in the specific legal context set out by, most recently, the Patriot Act, but that does not change what it means to attempt to affect a specific action through threatening lives.

The “moderate muslims” who will not decry this act? Who cannot bring themselves to say, as I say above, that nobody should ever be murdered over an unflattering drawing? Aiding and Abetting, and no better than the murderers.

Anyone, muslim or no, who does decry such insane, sociopathic violence? Him I’ll break bread with. Otherwise, if your religious faith leaves you incapable of speaking the sleightest ill of those who have done grievous wrong, then you stand with them, and you own what evil they commit.

  28. Zython says:

Think about how you feel about the criticisms of the Catholic church’s child sex abuse scandal. It’s kinda like that. I agree they should be more vocal about it, but I think you should use this issue as an opportunity to reflect on how you handle criticism of your religion.

  29. Rex Mundane says:

A Statement from Matt and Trey

In the 14 years we’ve been doing South Park we have never done a show that we couldn’t stand behind. We delivered our version of the show to Comedy Central and they made a determination to alter the episode. It wasn’t some meta-joke on our part. Comedy Central added the bleeps. In fact, Kyle’s customary final speech was about intimidation and fear. It didn’t mention Muhammad at all but it got bleeped too. We’ll be back next week with a whole new show about something completely different and we’ll see what happens to it.

  30. I guess your right – death threats by mail are the same as promising to kill someone publicly….

I am interested in why you can’t simply direct me to the search …

Or is that the new “wise ass” Google… ?

I didn’t recall anyone coming forward, and saying they were going to kill Andres Serrano, and of course, there was no institution or organization that said that. But considering the fact that it was a controversy in 1989, and these Islamic incidents have happened several times a year since then, I will let you judge the equivalency.

And, oh yes, August, many of the “Serrano got death threats” stories were sidebars to several other Islamic death threats. So they are not equivalent, in my humble opinion.

    But http://lmgtfy.com is quite clever

  31. fafaroo says:

Thank you, August. Beat me too it as well.

Frank, you’re fast approaching Jay Tea levels of wrong.

  32. fafaroo says:

    Yeah, Frank. You wrote:

In all the uproar over “Piss Christ” (mentioned above) no one threatened to kill anyone.

And that’s one hundred percent wrong.

So now it’s back peddle time.

P.S. Martin Scorsese also received death threats over The Last Temptation of Christ: http://www.cineaste.com/articles/emhollywood-under-siege-martin-scorsese-the-religious-right-and-the-culture-warsem

  33. MadDog says:

I always find it highly amusing when people from one religion think that their blasphemy “laws” should somehow apply to people who are not part of the same religion. As a non-muslim, (and non-christian and non- everything else) surely I’m already damned as far as their god is concerned? Their faith must be pretty fucking weak if they don’t trust their own deity to deal with infidels, and think it’s their job to hand out “justice” on its behalf.

  34. Thank you, grasshopper!

My opinion on the issue has changed and is changing. You should use this opportunity to sit down with fafaroo and figure out how to make this about me.

Even if I was mistaken about Serrano’s statement that he received death threats, please don’t start slinging “equivalency” manure around.

Serrano said he received death threats. These other guys came right out and said Trey and Stone should be killed. Serrano’s work depicted either the Living God or his Son submerged in urine. South Park depicted a cartoon of a Prophet of God. Serrano is still alive . van Gogh, in the Netherlands , is dead, and are all the people in Denmark who died in that disturbance.

But, if you say they’re the same, then they’re the same.

Oh, and fafaroo, that’s “back pedal.”

BTW, how many guys were in that race to prove me wrong ?

    Mwahahahahahahahahahahahahaha !!!!

  35. Fafaroo says:

    That’s some dancing, Frank.

  36. Zython says:

Frank, if you’re going to click the reply button under my post, at least say something about it. I was responding to this:

or attempts to distinguish the so called “moderate Muslims” – who seem to be in the “witness of terrorism program,” because you can never find one to call anything the Islamofascists do, terrorism – from the Islamic terrorists, who seem to be everywhere but the front porch.

“They” must denounce terrorism time and time again. Yet you yourself have refused to criticize the Catholic Church’s role in mass child rape. Why must the moderate Muslims be beholden to a standard that you don’t hold yourself to?

You should use this opportunity to sit down with fafaroo and figure out how to make this about me.

Frank, your statements don’t exist in a vacuum. Everything you have posted is recorded. It’s getting harder and harder for someone to be a hypocrite and get away with it.

Serrano said he received death threats. These other guys came right out and said Trey and Stone should be killed.

What are you implying here? That Serrano is lying?

  37. Well said, a teddy bear with santa in it.

It’s sad when people think that any religion is above ridicule. If you want to believe anything that’s entirely insane, it’s only normal for people to point it out in jest.

    -GG

  38. Nothing you haven’t done a hundred times – ask Dennis.

  39. Yet you yourself have refused to criticize the Catholic Church’s role in mass child rape.

    a) Child molestation is called child molestation , and not child rape, because child molestation is molestation, including rape, whereas child rape, does not include molestation.
It is precisely because no one has defined the Church’s role in these cases of molestation that I refuse to attack the Church , which is altogether different from defending it.

What are you implying here? That Serrano is lying?
I am stating that Serrano can define a death threat any way he wishes; until I know who said what and when, I can’t judge a death threat.

  40. fafaroo says:

Frank, you said Serrano didn’t receive death threats at all.

    You were corrected.

Now you want to make some huge distinction between death threats “received” and death threats “said.”

    Okey dokey.

  41. Everyone who covered for the people involved in the crimes are accessories; anyone who concealed information about the investigation committed a crime; anyone who helped remove the criminals from the jurisdiction committed a crime; anyone who helps cover a up a crime commits a crime.

The role that the church had in *the specific molestation crimes* is pretty low. The role that they had after the crimes were committed was very high.

Of course, because there are threats to people’s eternal souls if they come forward, we may never know the extent of those crimes.

This is really pretty easy to note if you have any skills with critical thinking. Oh. Heh. Right. Sorry Frank, didn’t mean to point out your deficit in public, like it’s something that you should be ashamed of. I mean, that you look stone stupid, again and again, because you just don’t bother to try to separate bullshit from evidence, that you just don’t dig for the truth, that you just don’t are what kind of crap you end up stating, that’s not something that should be discussed. Not in public. You know, because it wouldn’t be very kind.

Oh, wait, is my microphone on?

  42. SteveCo says:

OW: “No religion is above ridicule. None.”

So true, especially for Scientology … Mormonism, especially regarding the magic underwear, is pretty ripe for fun too.

  43. OK, fafaroo… I was mistaken
You can put down the hand lotion and go get some tissues.

  44. Dr. Psycho says:

I dunno — did Farris ever actually say he was in favor of that far-out leftist Bill of Rights stuff?

  45. Dr. Psycho says:

And in spite of that, it still inspired protests and threats of terrorism.
