USS Nicholas
USS Nicholas: Beater Of Pirates

Bringing the pain.

A group of suspected pirates was captured Thursday after attacking a U.S. Navy frigate in the Indian Ocean, according to a statement released by the U.S. Sixth Fleet.

The USS Nicholas reported taking fire from a suspected pirate skiff shortly after midnight local time west of the Seychelles, the statement said. The Nicholas quickly returned fire and began pursuing the skiff, which was eventually disabled. A boarding team from the Nicholas subsequently captured and detained three people, the statement said.

This would seem to be an excellent time for that I’m On A Boat video.

    A.

Honestly, I hope they never learn, our boys need to keep current with their skills, and manuals and paper targets only go so far. Sounds like CMDR Kesselring is running a tight ship, way to go boys!

Gotta wonder at the mindset people in a skiff have with thinking they can take on what is obviously a warship.

  5. PTCruiser says:

Those men in the skiff are extremely lucky to be alive. What they did was reckless and utterly foolish. They could have killed a seaman on the Nicholas for no reason other than an act of hubris. Sad.

A local sports show had listeners call in with the quickest way way to get your ass kicked. Number one was telling Tommy DeVito to go get his shine box. This might top that.

Tin Can sailors rule the sea .. and as earlier commented, can always use target practice.

Yeah, kind of makes you wonder what they were thinking. At what point in this fracas did the ‘skiffers’ have that “Oh, shit” moment?

  11. Jody says:

Pirates off the coast of West Africa are generally desperate, frequently starving, and not uncommonly hopped up on some form of mind altering substance. Given those circumstances I could see how a group of them could think it was a good idea. At least until the return fire began.

I must confess to a certain sympathy with the Somali pirates. FWIW, they didn’t just wake up one morning, look away to eastward, and think, “Hey, I’ll get a boat and a dozen buddies, and let’s go sail out there looking for ships to hijack.”

Mind you, I’m not saying they’re a great bunch of guys; simply that they have reasons for doing what they’re doing other than being utter bastards.

    Conservative response to the pirates:

“And once again we see how weak-kneed and hobbled Obama is. If he was a real president, a real patriot, then those pirates would never have dared to fire. In fact, they never would have been born. In fact, their parents would never have been born”

    :) :) :)

These pirates made the worst possible miscalculation and were fortunate that they did not pay with their lives.
