President Obama told ABC News today he is confident that health care reform legislation will pass.

“I believe we are going to get the votes, we’re going to make this happen,” Obama told ABC’s Jake Tapper in an exclusive interview. Obama said Democrats continue to work to get a bill ready for a vote by the end of the week.

Feeling better about this today than I was on Friday…

  1. john sullivan says:

Nahhhh…not happening! If he had the votes, The Chosen One would have already jammed it through. Now they’re trying to make up new rules as they go! Wow, what would you guys be saying if the republicans tried something like this????

  2. liberalrob says:

I love how the years 2001-2006 just never happened.

  3. Scooter says:

We would say “It’s about time Republican’s did something about health care.” (rim shot)

  4. SaveFarris says:

I believe we are going to get the votes

Noone else notices that this directly contradicts Axelrod from 48 hours ago that they already had the votes?

Hillary was right: not ready to lead.

  5. Wilbur says:

Actually it says a lot about his leadership that you of the disloyal opposition have to scrape the barrel to find something so picayune to attack him with.

  6. SaveFarris says:

Oh, there’s plenty to attack him with, this was just Example #5492.

If he was as great a leader as you and Oliver claim, this would have been done a year ago.

  7. Jaim says:

Obama was naive to think that any member of the “party of no” or the conserva-dems like Lieberman would ever act in good faith and help pass a good bill (lest we forget, the majority of Americans want health-care reform).

I can think of worse things former presidents have done like, say, start two wars and not have the balls or the skills to finish either of them.

  8. SaveFarris says:

    Obama was naive

Thank you for making my point!

    PS: “Was”?!?

  9. John Sullivan says:

Bottom line..If they had the votes, none of this would be happening. Maybe, Just maybe, the DEMOCRATS who are voting against it are listenign to their constituents who do not want this particular bill. How come none of you so-called-”enlightened” people on here are addressing this aspect of the situation?

  10. Indeed says:

Indeed. Because Teh American People DO NOT want Death Panels. And Teh American People DO NOT want Teh Communist Socialism. And Teh American People DO NOT want Teh Government getting in their Medicare. And Teh American People DO NOT want another expensive, deficit busting Government Program. And Teh American People DO NOT want an Indonesian Kenyan telling them what to do. Thank God we have good people like Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck and their highly intelligent and thoughtful followers to speak the TRUTH.

  11. John Sullivan says:

I like the way you steer your argumant to everything you hate about people who have different point of view from you, Indeed, but you still didn’t make an arguement about how the American people don’t want this particular bill, and they really don’t like the way it’s being forced down their throats, If you don’t agree, that’s fine. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

  12. Indeed says:

Oh, hey, please forgive me. I didn’t want to come across as mean or anything. I just didn’t realize that since some people believe in Death Panels, that that means they exist (did you hear about those? It was in all the papers Fox News). Likewise, when Republicans make the case that reducing Medicare spending (that is, decreasing the size of government) is “Socialism”, that it’s merely another point of view and not, you know, utterly contradictory bullshit. My bad. And when I hear Teabaggers tell me over and over and over that this bill will increase the deficit, despite the CBO’s claim to the contrary, well, I guess diff’rent strokes, huh? And you’re dead right about the American People not wanting this forced down their throats. I hear Fox News commentators repeat that phrase (or “crammed” or “rammed”) during every segment (journalist Jon Stewart had an informative piece on this just the other evening, you may wish to look it up). Thanks again for speaking out against Reconciliation and the big meanie Democrat Party forcing unwanted legislation down the throats of Teh American People. I’m sure you would be just as concerned if the Republicans ever did anything like that. As if. Oh, and Socialism.

  13. Enlightened Liberal says:

I keep hearing this “rammed down our throats” meme from cons. Phallic issues anyone?

  14. Quaker in a Basement says:

Wow, what would you guys be saying if the republicans tried something like this????

Good morning, Mr. Van Winkle. Sleep well?

  15. John Sullivan says:

To get back on the topic, do you honestly believe that if they had the votes by now they wouldn’t have voted? Come on, get real here……

  16. Sean D. Martin says:

John Sullivan: <i.but you still didn’t make an arguement about how the American people don’t want this particular bill

When asked about the bill, as a vague abstract whole, folks do tend to be more cautious and echo opinions being shouted by folks like Fox’s “news” organization and say they’re not in favor.

But when asked about specific provisions in the actual bill, when asked whether they are in favor of or opposed to an actual thing that’s in the bill, they are overwhelmingly in favor of it.

In other words, when dealing with reality and facts, folks favor the bill.

  17. John Sullivan says:

Sean: Let me ask you, along with all the rest of you guys in here a question: Why does every argument in here eventually get around to blaming Fox News? I haven’t seen an argument on here yet from you guys that doesn’t trash Fox. Don’t you give the American people any credit for being able to make up their own minds?

  18. Quaker in a Basement says:

Yep. I’m with SDM on this.

People are against: death panels, governent takeover of one-sixth of the economy, throwing grandma to the wolves, free doctor visits for undocumented immigrants, slashing Medicare benefits, rationing, and “socialized” medicine.

Of course, none of those are actually, you know, in the bill. These are all just examples Republican Party demogoguery and fear mongering.

People are for: Making insurance companies live up to their obligations, reducing the number of people who go broke because they get sick, eliminating unproductive subsidies to private corporations that promised to “enhance” Medicare benefits but failed to deliver, and making it possible for all Americans to go see a doctor when they need to.

These are the things that are actually in the bill. Funny how Republicans never argue against these things.

  19. Quaker in a Basement says:

I haven’t seen an argument on here yet from you guys that doesn’t trash Fox. Don’t you give the American people any credit for being able to make up their own minds?

I see. If we think moneyed interests are running a big dollar misinformation campaign, that means we “don’t trust the American people to make up their own minds”?

    You’re a funny guy, Sullivan.

  20. John Sullivan says:

Quaker, what you fail to mention that’s also in the bill is kickbacks to Senators so they will vote in favor of passage, givebacks to Big Pharma to stop the importation of medicines from Canada, the federal funding of abortions. Pleasemake sure that when you are going to highlite things in the bill, please make sure you also enter the back room deals The Chosen One is making with people in his own party, for crying out loud! Jeez, he has to do these things with Democrats! This thing stinks to high heaven, and you guys are still drinking the potion!

  21. John Sullivan says:

You know, quaker, I could say the same thing about organizations like MoveOn or Media matters, where our host is employed by that generous employer, George Soros. Last time I looked, your side had some big money backing “misinformation” campaigns. Like I said, you guys can’t even make an argument without invoking Fox.

  22. Quaker in a Basement says:

I could say the same thing about organizations like MoveOn or Media matters,

You could. But if you did, that would show that you “don’t trust the American people to make up their own minds.” At least by your standards.

  23. Quaker in a Basement says:

I could say the same thing about organizations like MoveOn or Media matters

If you did, you’d have to come up with some examples of misinformation these organizations have been spreading. Got any?

  24. Sean D. Martin says:

John Sullivan: Sean: Let me ask you, along with all the rest of you guys in here a question: Why does every argument in here eventually get around to blaming Fox News?

I didn’t blame Fox News in my comment. All I did was note folks echo the sentiments expressed on Fox News. (Actually, “by folks like Fox’s “news” organization”.)

Now let me ask you a question, John. Why does every response from your side around here inevitably start with we-be-victims,-why-you-picking-on-Fox? type of whine instead of responding the the actual point that was made?

  25. liberalrob says:

And then I read crap like this, that almost makes me want to support the bill passing just to stick it to the cons.

  26. Sean D. Martin says:

John Sullivan: MoveOn or Media matters … Last time I looked, your side had some big money backing “misinformation” campaigns.

So list some examples. There are long lists of examples of places where Fox News’ misinformation, hypocrisy, mis-representations, false statements, etc. Where’s your list of similar length?

  27. Quaker in a Basement says:

also in the bill is kickbacks to Senators so they will vote in favor of passage, givebacks to Big Pharma to stop the importation of medicines from Canada, the federal funding of abortions

    Oh dear, dear, dear.

Kickbacks to Senators? We’ll overlook the hyperbole–no one actually believes there are actual payments to a Senator for his or her vote. I believe you’re referring to Mr. Nelson’s shennanigans. Not our favorite either, but also not an argument for or against the substance of the bill.

Givebacks to Big Pharma? Do I understand? You want to keep a system in which we let the Canadanian government strong arm American companies to bring down drug prices so we can export drugs to Canada and then turn right around and re-import them? On what planet does this system make sense?

Federal funding of abortions? Simply false.

Sullivan, you’re providing a perfect example of what I wrote earlier. Republicans won’t argue against the bill. They have to create imaginary boogey men and then argue against them.

  28. Quaker in a Basement says:

the back room deals The Chosen One is making

Ooops! Gave away the game right there, Sullivan. Your objections aren’t really about healthcare at all, are they?

  29. Sean D. Martin says:

Yeah. Still waiting for them to argue against what is actually in the bill, instead of against things that a pure lies or gross misrepresentations at best.

  30. Quaker in a Basement says:

Do you even know what Media Matters is about?

  31. Sean D. Martin says:

Nope. They’re against Obama. Doesn’t matter what Obama is actually for, wingnuts are against it. (On principle. They’re such a principled bunch.)

  32. Quaker in a Basement says:

My error, SDM. I misread. For some reason I read your comment as Sullivan asking for examples of Fox’s misinformation.

    Kindly ignore.

  33. Sean D. Martin says:

    No prob.

  34. John Sullivan says:

Well to start, last Oct 21, MM spread the rumors about racist quotes attributed to Rush Limbaugh on his purchase of the St.Louis Rams in an article by Bryan Burwell. On the 22, Karl Frisch admitted they “may” be false. he stard that on the Stephanie Miller Show. Let’s not forget the famous General “Betrayus” ad run by MoveOn that was universally condemmed on the floor of the Senate by Senators from both sides. Would you like a few more?

  35. Indeed says:

Yeah, it does stink, as many have noted many times. But as many of those have noted, this is the best shot we’ve got. It’s called politics, Einstein. Republicans have zero interest in anything close to health care reform. Shit, Dutch Reagan cut a record saying that if Medicare was passed, we’d never ever be able to choose a doctor and it would be the equivalent of Communism. Really. Look it up. Sound familiar? And what of Ol’ Dutch’s dire warnings. Which came true? Any?

I don’t seem to hear Republicans or their media arm, Fox News, bitching about that too much about the Pharma deal. All I hear are Death Panels and Socialism and Hitler and what Quaker in a Basement noted people are against above. That’s weird.

Where’s that long list of misinformation from Media Matters or MoveOn, by the way?

  36. John Sullivan says:

Come on, now, gentlemen, lets call it what it really is when your boy in the White House starts strong-arming people. old fashioned Chicago politics. But, again, guts, you’re getting off topic. You still don’t have the votes. Why not?

  37. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Yes, I would.

With links this time, if you please. I’m interested to see the specifics of the “misinformation” you’re talking about.

  38. Quaker in a Basement says:

last Oct 21, MM spread the rumors about racist quotes attributed to Rush Limbaugh on his purchase of the St.Louis Rams in an article by Bryan Burwell.

Are you saying Bryan Burwell wrote an article for Media Matters?

  39. John Sullivan says:

Please, Please, quake, I love it when you guys are accused of the same things you smear the right over. You still haven’t answered the first question of the post…why haven’t they voted on it yet if they already have the vtes?

  40. John Sullivan says:

oh, I see…whaen your side does these things, it’s ‘politics’.When the republicans do the same things, it’s fascism..there you go, Quake, jst like you said to me,,,you just blew your own arguement.

  41. Indeed says:

We’ll take that list now. Thanks.

  42. Quaker in a Basement says:

when your boy in the White House

    Boy?

Your hood is slipping there, Sullivan.

  43. John Sullivan says:

I’d love to chat with you some more, guys, but..gotta catch a train.

  44. Quaker in a Basement says:

lets call it what it really is when your boy in the White House starts strong-arming people. old fashioned Chicago politics

Right. Washington politics was like a Sunday school ice cream social ’til this Chicago crowd came along.

    Tell us another one, Sullivan.

  45. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Are you confused, Sullivan?

You’re using my name and replying to Indeed. Not making any sense either, also.
